Sciatica pain originates in the low back and radiates down the back of the leg. It can be a nagging and activity-altering condition that may resolve on its own for some but also can increase in severity if not addressed for others. Here are some of my top tips to consider! Symptoms may include ▪️mild, dull pain ▪️radiating pain down the leg (usually just one side) ▪️sharp, stabbing pain ▪️pain in back, butt, hip, and/or leg ▪️numbness & tingling in foot/leg ▪️burning or decreased sensation ▪️weakness The severity of symptoms & cause of onset determines what exercises you need, how much & when. ⚠️⚠️ The most important thing to keep in mind is to keep your body moving in some way! Are you experiencing back pain during pregnancy? Back pain during pregnancy is extremely common. There are many changes happening to your body and these can all contribute to the discomfort. You gain weight, your center of gravity changes, muscles in the stomach area that support the spine stretch and weaken, and hormones relax ligaments in the joints of your pelvis. Some tips to help manage back pain during pregnancy include: - Practicing good posture - Taking regular breaks to stretch and move - Strengthening core muscles through exercise - Using heat or cold packs to soothe the area - Getting plenty of rest and relaxation - Wearing comfortable shoes and clothing - Trying prenatal massage or physical therapy Are you including light exercise in your daily routine? The following exercises have been shown to alleviate back pain in pregnancy: 1. Pelvic tilts: Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Tilt your pelvis upwards and then back down again. 2. Cat-cow stretches: On your hands and knees, arch your back like a cat, then round it like a cow. 3. Knee to chest stretches: Lie on your back and bring one knee towards your chest. Hold for 30 seconds and then switch sides. 4. Lunges: Stand with feet hip-width apart and take a large step forward with one foot. Lower your body down into a lunge, keeping your back knee almost touching the ground. 5. Swimming: Swimming is a great low-impact exercise for pregnant women, and can help alleviate back pain. 6. Prenatal yoga: Many yoga poses can help alleviate back pain during pregnancy, such as downward-facing dog, child’s pose, and pigeon pose. 7. Bridging: Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Slowly lift your hips up towards the ceiling, squeezing your glutes and lower back muscles as you lift. 8. We often talk about all the different ways we can bring on labor, but what about all the tiny little things we can do during our entire pregnancy to prepare our bodies for when labor starts. Try some of these tricks this weekend: 1) Rest! The more you rest, the lower the stress hormones, the more relaxed your muscles are. This will decrease back pain, tension, and pelvic floor muscle tension. Also, the more rested you are, the more energy you will have to push. 2) Progressive muscle relaxation is an amazing technique to help train the nervous system to relax muscles and release tension. The more you practice this now, the easier it will be to release and relax your muscles during labor. See link in bio for Prenatal Yoga Space Youtube which has a great version for pregnancy. 3) Surround yourself with other pregnant women. The more we connect with women going through the same thing as us the more supported we feel. Studies show that having a supportive community improves birth outcomes for the baby and mental health outcomes for new moms. Join a moms group, a prenatal class, or a prenatal community such as Empowered Birth, see link in bio. 4) Flowing, watery, movements in the pelvis are amazing for getting the baby in the best position for delivery. It also eases low back pain and exercises the muscles around the hips to keep the pelvis happy. 5) The more relax the face, jaw, and gluteal muscles the more our pelvic floor relaxes. Pregnancy Associated Osteoporosis or Pregnancy and Lactation Osteoporosis (PAO or PLO) is an extremely rare complication for some women during pregnancy. The likelihood of it occurring is estimated at approximately 4 in 100 000 pregnancies in the UK and it is still unknown as to why this small number of women are affected. If you have a family history of osteoporosis or have been prescribed blood-thinning medication during your pregnancy, then you may have an increased risk for developing PAO. If you have any of the following symptoms while pregnant or during the period you are breastfeeding, please contact your GP as soon as possible as these may indicate PAO and a possible fracture in your spine or ribs: - extreme back pain and muscle spams - loss of strength and ability hold anything - sudden loss of height For more information on PAO, the National Osteoporosis Society have released a useful booklet . You can also contact the Royal Osteoporosis Society for more information. Low back pain in pregnancy is one of the most common discomforts pregnant women can have. There is a lot of information out there about stretches and exercises to do to help your back feel better, but there are also a few really important tips you can practice every day that don’t require hitting the gym or dragging out your yoga mat. Always sitting with the hips higher than the knees will ensure that you have length in the low back which will relieve both your low back muscles and your lumbar spine. Bonus point, it will also make more space for the baby to get into a good position. Stop squeezing your butt cheeks. This tips the pelvis under you, straining your low back muscles and your lumbar spine. It also creates tension in your pelvic floor muscles which causes many problems with pregnancy and in labor. Rolling your hips forwards and backwards is a great way to release tight low back muscles, strengthen some of the supporting muscles around the hips, and help the baby move off your lumbar spine. Walking everyday is one of the best things you can do for your back in pregnancy. Make sure to wear supportive shoes and walk on a flat surface if your back or hips are hurting. Relaxation and sleep can greatly reduce back pain because they relieve muscle tension. Always find ways to relax the body and get plenty of rest.
