The Concert in Central Park (1982) by Simon and Garfunkel From Wiki: “The Concert in Central Park is the first live album by American folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel, released on February 16, 1982, by Warner Bros. Records. It was recorded on September 19, 1981, at a free benefit concert on the Great Lawn in Central Park, New York City, where the pair performed in front of 500,000 people. A film of the event was shown on TV and released on video. Proceeds went toward the redevelopment and maintenance of the park, which had deteriorated due to lack of municipal funding. The concert and album marked the start of a three-year reunion of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.” I remember the video being a staple on HBO during the early 1980s, and it was my introduction to Simon and Garfunkel outside of radio. At the time of the video’s release and my initial viewings, I was only 5/6 years-old, but I can remember how the crowd’s reaction made me feel proud to be from the Tri-State area. Reportedly, rehearsals were difficult due to Paul and Art’s strained relationship, but you wouldn’t know it from the recording. I still love both the album and video to this day. Album of the week this week is Paul Simon Graceland. This album used to belong to my grandparents and was given to me when I was helping move some furniture for them and found their collection of vinyls they had in the bottom of a cupboard. It was this Billy Joel: The Stranger ,The Bridge and Innocent Man. So these albums were the first LP records I ever owned. Graceland is a beautifully made album. A mix of Simon's other works with African music to create a unique and creatively memorable experience to listen to. I don't think I can recommend just a few tracks of the album. At the 2024 PEN America Literary Gala, honored the indelible songwriting of icon Paul Simon with the PEN/Audible Literary Service Award for his bountiful and unparalleled songs and lyrics over a half century. Bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell presented the award to Simon saying the songwriter “has provided the soundtrack of my life and I think that is true for millions of us around the world.” Gladwell added that Simon was a cross between “a genius and the guy from Queens in the bleachers yelling ‘He was out!.’” Simon said: “We’ve learned that the cause we are supporting tonight — PEN’s valid commitment to protect writers everywhere from censorship, coercion and imprisonment — is more urgently needed than ever. What can we do in the face of these seemingly mountainous problems? The worst case scenario would have us staring into a cultural and political abyss. That’s not going to happen, he added, quoting lines from the Nobel laureate poet Wisława Szymborska: “an abyss, but a little bridge, a little bridge, but shaky, shaky, but the only, there’s no other.” “We will have to build that bridge,” said Simon. “There is no other choice for us. May 17, 1969 - “The Boxer” by Simon & Garfunkel peaked at No.7 on the Hot 100. It was written by Paul Simon and included on their fifth and final studio album, Bridge over Troubled Water (1970). Produced by the duo and Roy Halee, it was released as a standalone single on March 21, 1969, but included on the album nine months later. Simon himself has suggested that the lyrics are largely autobiographical, written during a time when he felt he was being unfairly criticized: “I think I was reading the Bible around that time. That’s where I think phrases such as “workman’s wages” came from, and “seeking out the poorer quarters”. That was biblical. I think the song was about me: everybody’s beating me up, and I’m telling you now I’m going to go away if you don’t stop.” The chorus consists of repetitions of the non-lexical vocable “lie-la-lie”. In a 1990 interview with SongTalk magazine, Simon said: “I thought that ‘lie la lie was a failure of songwriting. I didn’t have any words! Then people said it was ‘lie’ but I didn’t really mean that. That it was a lie. But, it’s not a failure of songwriting, because people like that and they put enough meaning into it, and the rest of the song has enough power and emotion, I guess, to make it go, so it’s all right. But for me, every time I sing that part, I’m a little embarrassed.” The song has only one drumbeat, played during the ‘lie-la-lie’ refrain. Session drummer Hal Blaine created the heavily reverberated drum sound with the help of producer Roy Halee, who found a spot for the drums in front of an elevator in the Columbia offices. Blaine recounted the recording process: “There we were with all these mic cables, my drums, and a set of headphones. When the chorus came around—the ‘lie-la-lie’ bit—Roy had me come down on my snare drum as hard as I could. In that hallway, by the elevator shaft, it sounded like a cannon shot! Which was just the kind of sound we were after.” It performed well internationally, charting within the Top 10 in nine countries, peaking highest in the Netherlands, Austria, South Africa, and Canada. Rolling Stone ranked the song No. 106 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
