SOMEWHERE BEYOND THE SEA • ℯ𝓍𝒸ℯ𝓇𝓅𝓉 Hi friends 👋🏻 — I am sooooo happy to have received early access to an excerpt of TJ Klune’s new book SOMEWHERE BEYOND THE SEA through @netgalley 🙌🏼 Thank you SO much to @torbooks for giving me an opportunity to preview this book from one of my faaaaav authors 🥹🥹🥹 This is the very anticipated sequel to THE HOUSE IN THE CERULEAN SEA! I can’t wait to finish this excerpt and report back to you all - especially amidst the other exciting #tjklune news of late (MORE NEW BOOKS 👀📚) 𝒮𝓎𝓃ℴ𝓅𝓈𝒾𝓈 𝒷ℯ𝓁ℴ𝓌: A magical house. A secret past. A summons that could change everything. Arthur Parnassus lives a good life built on the ashes of a bad one. He’s the master of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six dangerous and magical children who live there. Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. He is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department In Charge of Magical Youth. And there’s the island’s sprite, Zoe Chapelwhite, and her girlfriend, Mayor Helen Webb. Together, they will do anything to protect the children. But when Arthur is summoned to make a public statement about his dark past, he finds himself at the helm of a fight for the future that his family, and all magical people, deserve. And when a new magical child hopes to join them on their island home—one who finds power in calling himself monster, a name that Arthur worked so hard to protect his children from—Arthur knows they’re at a breaking point: their family will either grow stronger than ever or fall apart. SOMEWHERE BEYOND THE SEA is out Sept. 10, 2024 #somewherebeyondtheseaexcerpt #netgalley

🪽 SOME DESPERATE GLORY REVIEW 👽 by Emily Tesh Pub. 2023 💅🏼💅🏼💅🏼💅🏼💅🏼 (5️⃣ manis) “What would peace look like? Many have wrestled with the question. Perhaps it can be enforced? Empires have prided themselves on being peace-bringers and peacekeepers. But this is a paradox. A peace brought about with the threat of violence is only a war in waiting.” SDG is described as a ‘space opera’, and that is utterly accurate. And we aren’t talking music - moreso the intensely melodramatic, galactic scope and the universe-shattering stakes that Emily Tesh has crafted in the world of SDG. 🌌 I needed to pair a mani with this book, but I’m taking a bit of a break from the nail salon during our big move transition, so I did this set with some press-ons. The white and gold trim speak to the classical themes of personhood, innocence, a clean slate...and the choices we can make even if we don’t know we are capable. There is a thread of ‘nature vs. nurture’ throughout the book that spoke to me, touching on characters’ inherent traits and the cultist behavior of those who would conquer a world and its people. The green symbolizes something much more unwieldly in the SDG universe - The Wisdom. With its ‘pulsing green unlight’, using shadowspace biotechnology, The Wisdom seeks to make decisions for the betterment of all living beings; and therein my friends lies the central conflict amidst the question of what it means to be a living being at all; what it means to be lonely vs. being alone; and what it means when everything you thought you knew is “peeled (away) like the shell from an egg.” “Just because Kyr was looking for it now didn’t mean she’d find it every time. Just because she knew where she’d come from and what she was didn’t mean she was safe from it.” I fell in love with so many of these characters (Yiso 👽 I 💝 u) — and that isn’t to say they’re all lovable or even likable, but that always makes for more compelling and authentic characters and plot points! Tesh manages to interweave LGBTQIA+ and feminist themes throughout that serve to enhance the narrative’s connection to our world’s history and current state. 2024 #hugoaward nominee for best novel 🚀

🚀 THE HUGO AWARD 2024 🏅 Hi friends 👋🏻 — today, I’m day-dreaming about The Hugo Award “Best Novel” nominees for the 2024 prize 🏆 If you’re new to ‘the Hugos’, they are awards for “excellence in the field of science fiction and fantasy. They were first awarded in 1953, and have been awarded every year since 1955. The awards are run by and voted on by fans.” Soooo many favorite books throughout my life have been Hugo Award winners or nominees, but I’ve lost track of them over the years, and am excited to dive back into the hype of these great works of science fiction and fantasy! This year’s nominees were announced a few days ago and the prize will be awarded in Glasgow at the 82nd World Science Fiction Convention on August 11, 2024! The nominees are: ▪️The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty (Harper Voyager, Harper Voyager UK) ▪️The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera (Tordotcom) ▪️Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh (Tordotcom, Orbit UK) ▪️Starter Villain by John Scalzi (Tor, Tor UK) ▪️Translation State by Ann Leckie (Orbit US, Orbit UK) ▪️Witch King by Martha Wells (Tordotcom) I have JUST finished THE ADVENTURES OF AMINA AL-SIRAFI before posting this, and woah - pirates, magic, other worlds, and adventure like no other! So. Good. 🔥🔥🔥 can’t wait to dig into my next one - WITCH KING! 👑 ❓Do you love science fiction lit? Are you a hater (JK, just not a fan?)? Do you read Hugo Award winners? Let’s chit chat 💬 it up!

I’m someone who still finds it hard to speak up when I’m misgendered. I’m still coming to terms after all these years with which terms feel like they fit me. Girl feels genderless to me, equal to bro in my mind. But ones like lady, woman, ma’am, miss, etc are sandpaper and acid on my bones. Reading books written by people like me, and about people like me has been this incredible journey for my personhood. Books, in particular, helped me realize that feelings of discomfort and costuming inside my own skin are completely normal for those of us who function outside of the genders we were ascribed at birth. Reading these books has taught me to be a better ally for others but also for myself. They’ve loosened my tongue in situations I used to remain silent. They taught me that I am not alone. I found peace between their pages and an acceptance for myself i didn’t realize I was struggling with. I’m incredibly honored to say Happy Trans Day of Visibility. I see you, I love you, and you are not alone 🫶 • • • • • #bookstagram #bookrecs #booksta #bookstagrammer #internationaltransgenderdayofvisibility #transdayofvisibility🏳️‍⚧️ #bookrecsofinstagram #transbooks #nonbinaryreader #bookish #bookrecommendations

For day 1 of the Trans Rights Readathon I read Jamie and wow! I wish I'd had this book when I was 11, I might have realised I was non binary a lot sooner and wouldn't have felt so weird when I finally did. If I have children I will definitely be reading this with them! I can definitely recommend it if you want a book for kids that's both fun and interesting and also educational about gender. At the end of each chapter there's a little section about gender or definitions of words. It explains it so well and simply. I think there are a lot of adults who would get a lot of it and help them understand non binary children more. I loved every character, especially Jamie's brother Olly! Everyone needs an Olly in their lives! I'm so glad I read this and I'm excited for my next read! 📚 #jamie #transrightsreadathon #ldlapinski #nonbinaryreader #trr24 #transgenderbooks #transrights #readathon #transrightsreadathon24 #enbypride #nonbinarybooks #nonbinarybooksta #transbooks #queerbooks #queerbookrecs

💅🏼 THERE THERE REVIEW 🪶 by Tommy Orange pub. 2018 •💅🏼💅🏼💅🏼💅🏼💅🏼 (5️⃣ manis)• Hi friends 👋🏻 — THERE THERE was the winner 🏆 of the voting poll! I was very excited (and nervous) to work on this one since it was a complete and total 5-mani read for me. I have been meaning to get to this book for years and I’m so glad I have now. “Buried ancestral land, glass and concrete and wire and steel…There is no there there.” It is a story of twelve dynamic characters, ‘Urban Indians’ living in Oakland, California, who converge on the Big Oakland Powwow and whose lives and experiences are set on an inevitable and ominous collision course. 👀💥 I could not stop reading this book once I started. The story at its core is about indigenous identities, effects of colonialism and of gentrification, of loyalty, family, and one that navigates and explores deep, often painful histories about the Americas and of each character. It is both funny and fiercely tense, ultimately leaving me completely breathless, speechless, and with no words to describe what I had experienced (until now). My phenomenal nail artist @elaine_ig_nails and I collaborated on a set of nails that embodied multiple facets of the book’s cover aesthetic (I was inspired by both the cover pictures with the mani, and also the other edition with the feather and blood spatter pictures on another slide -swipe to see). It is representative of the intergenerational themes, seen in the spindling spider’s legs 🕷️, the themes of interconnectedness in the web 🕸️ and marbled swirling colors…and of violence, of sacrifice, and heroism and loss 🩸. This manicure set and review is truly meant as a tribute to a novel that I can’t believe took me this long to pick up and left such a mark on my spirit that I will continue thinking about for quite some time. 🧡💛❤️‍🩹💔 I am excited for WANDERING STARS, which is serving as both a prequel and a sequel to the events of THERE THERE 🪶 ✨… ❓have you read THERE THERE? Do you have similar thoughts or differing thoughts about this book? What other books/ authors do you recommend for digging deeper into the indigenous peoples and their stories? Lets chit-chat it up 💬

And just like that, I was back, book in hand and heart open to new adventures. 💖 **Genres I Adore**: Yes, I confess, my reading list has been quite... steamy 🌶️. But hey, who doesn't love a bit of smut now and then? However, I'm on a mission to branch out. Fantasy, horror, non-fiction, sci-fi—you name it, I'm ready to explore it. 📢 **Calling All Book Lovers**: Got any non-romance recommendations? Which book do you want to see paired aesthetically and/ or conceptually with a manicure accompanying a full review?! They’re all so different and I will likely return to some of these for manis and reviews at a later time if they don’t win! 🥇 ⁉️cast your vote in the poll! ☀️ SHE WHO BECAME THE SUN 🇨🇳 by Shelley Parker-Chan Pub. 2021 🎧 on Audio •💅🏼💅🏼💅🏼💅🏼💅🏼• (5️⃣ manis) In SHE WHO BECAME THE SUN, a young girl, destined for ‘nothing’, pursues her ironically dead brother’s fate of greatness by taking on his identity in a constant gamble with the Heavens (and the men who control ancient China).👤 I loved this historical Chinese fantasy story — such an epic reimagining of the rise from peasantry to the powerful for Zhu Yuanzhang. For historical context, Zhu was a leader among the Red Turban Rebellion and became the founding Emperor of the Ming Dynasty in 14th Century China 🇨🇳 Amidst the obvious political intrigue and brutality of constant warfare, there is such a brilliantly executed exploration of gender identity and bodily autonomy that set this apart from so many other fantasy stories. 💖 I love that the characters in this story are flawed, complicated, and maddening. Moments of tenderness and of friction, three questions always looming over everything: can you claim your own fate? What will you do to secure that fate? And once you’re successful, are you still surrounded by those that loved the beautiful, truest parts of you? Or have you burned those bits of soul to ash on your rise to shine brighter than the sun ☀️? I am psyched to read book 2 in this #duology as soon as possible!! On hold at the library 📚 🗓️ ❓Have you read SHE WHO BECAME THE SUN? What duologies are your favorites??

✨ FRESH READS 📚 Hi friends hi 👋🏻 — I’ve got two new books on the docket this week and I’m super excited for both of these! First up, I am listening to PUNCH ME UP TO THE GODS by Brian Broome, a memoir and the winner of the Kirkus Prize (in addition to many more accolades 🏆)…described as ‘raw’, ‘poetic’ and a ‘masterwork’, I am already invested in Broome’s reflection on growing up a young black gay boy in America. Next up i am reading HOW TO BUILD A BOAT by Elaine Feeney, long-listed for the 2023 Booker Prize! Reading and planning to join the Booker of the Month club call with @deedireads and her crew next week to discuss! I’m not super far in, but I can already tell is likely going to make me cry and I’m here for it. 🥲 I’ve finished SKIPPY DIES and a few other books that haven’t gotten reviewed yet, so stay tuned for those this week or through the weekend! 🗓️ ❓Have you read either of these books?? Let’s chit chat it up 💬

📚 CURRENTLY READING 🤓 Hi friends 👋🏻 — I’m back on the road for work this week, heading to Winston-Salem, NC for some literacy coaching consultation visits! On my trip, I’ve got these three current reads on deck for the travel: 1️⃣ SKIPPY DIES by Paul Murray — this one is my next book for the #bigbookreading2024 challenge hosted by @time4reading. I started this a couple weeks ago, but had to press pause. Still working my way through this ‘big book’ for the ‘new to you’ prompt! 🕰️ 2️⃣ FUNNY BOY by Shyam Selvadurai — this queer coming of age tale from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 is so moving and humorous and will be done this week for sure. #readtheworldchallenge by @the.storygraph 📖 3️⃣ SHE WHO BECAME THE SUN by Shelley Parker-Chan — described as ‘Mulan meets The Song of Achilles’, the brilliant scene-setting and language right away has me hooked into this fantasy set in 1300s China 🇨🇳. An LGBTQIA+ protagonist satisfies another prompt on the #shimmeringworlds challenge hosted by @afantasysky ✨ We’ll see how much reading time I can accomplish between the travels and the hotel downtime - stay tuned! 🥸🤩 ❓whatcha reading this week? Read any of these on today’s rotation? Lets chit-chat it up 💬

💟 BEAUTYLAND REVIEW 📠 By Marie-Helene Bertino Pub. 2024 •💅🏼💅🏼💅🏼💅🏼💅🏼• (5️⃣ manis) Hi friends 👋🏻 — I have not stopped thinking about BEAUTYLAND since I finished it, and today I am finally ready to drop this review and the magnificent nail set that @elaine_ig_nails did for me 💅🏼🩷 Such an original story that centers us into a decades-long account of a young girl (who is perhaps not so human?) named Adina, growing up in Philadelphia, and recounting her observations on human behavior through faxes to her superiors 👽✨. This book captures so many of the oddities of the human experience through a charming voice crafted lovingly by Bertino. Adina’s relationships (familial, platonic, romantic) are on full display as she navigates living life, trying to find a sense of place and belonging. Through both joyful and heartbreaking anecdotes, BEAUTYLAND touches on the loneliness or exile we can feel even among a world full of people. As we follow Adina’s journey, I remembered and reflected on my own experiences of feeling othered, on neurodivergence, on true perspective. What does it means to build a beautiful life for yourself on Earth while we are all constantly aware of the limits to our existence? I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is a great blend for those who enjoy literary fiction and also a bit of sci-fi on the side 🤭The audio was particularly engaging! Deserving of a mani-pairing means YOU GOTTA READ IT. Will be posting some fav lines in my stories/ on the highlight. 💜🩷💙🩵🤍 ❓Have you read BEAUTYLAND? I’d love to hear your thoughts! Lets chit-chat it up 💬

🧚 REVISITING FAVORITES 🏴‍☠️ Hi friends 👋🏻 — as Hunter and I continue to pack our lives into little boxes, preparing to embark on a new adventure, I find myself thinking a lot about the previous ‘chapters’ in my life. 📦 I’ll just be blunt: the last few years have been a challenge for me. I’m learning to let go of some pain, to unlearn some not-so-great behaviors and shift mindsets…more than anything, I’ve just been trying to remember who I am. Like many queer folx, a lot of my life centered around the idea that I couldn’t be who I was, only who others told me I was; those conditioned beliefs about oneself are hard to break…but thankfully now, I’m surrounded by people and experiences that not only bring me joy, but help me grow. Thinking about the past always makes me want to revisit my fav stories. Things that ground me into a sense of self that was taken away for so long. PETER PAN has always been one of my very favorite stories. It’s got magic, pirates, adventure…and of course who wants to be a grown up these days?!? All kidding aside, we do grow up. But, we can either grow physically and stay fixed in our conditioned beliefs, or we can grow in infinite ways, finding beauty in change and in aging. In living a life that is filled with meaning for YOU. Just as we critique ourselves in order to grow, when we look back on some of our favs, we should do the same for the stories & media we choose to consume. PETER PAN is definitely my favorite ‘story’, but is not my favorite ‘book’, and it is far from being a perfectly rounded and inclusive story. I take the joy and reflect on the rest. 🧐 These two editions help me do just that…the one featured on the left, and in the first couple of follow up slides is annotated with many historical notes, along with solid critique surrounding JM Barrie, the representation of certain people groups (indigenous populations 👀) and more. The second edition is an interactive book with fun & engaging pop-outs, maps, etc. 🤩 Thinking back, but looking ahead & charting a course for Neverland (I mean Philly ✨) ❓What are your favs that stick with you? Do they require a new lens & critique in order to continue consumption? 💬

🍄 BELONGING, by Nora Krug 🇩🇪 💅🏼💅🏼💅🏼💅🏼💅🏼 •5 manis• #readtheworldchallenge Hi friends 👋🏻— we have a 5-Mani read 🚨 in BELONGING: A German Reckons with History and Home 🏡. As you can see, this review is also accompanied by a #newnailset done for me by the fabulously talented @elaine_ig_nails 💅🏼 “How do you know who you are, if you don’t understand where you come from?” This stunning graphic memoir details the author’s journey in self-discovery and identity exploration. Krug provides us with gorgeous illustrations along with primary source documents and charming anecdotes on German culture and flea market finds that help to ground us into a feeling of intimacy and to create context. A few of these anecdotes inspired the nail set, with poisonous mushrooms growing amidst a dark silhouette of vines and shadows, alongside the lush greenery and forests that, idolized in German culture, were cut down and destroyed as reparations after the war. These visuals are also the lens through which we view her family’s history and follow as Krug seeks answers to dark and challenging questions about her family but also about what it means to be German in a post-war society. A few visuals are included from the publishers page on the slides (@simonbooks thanks for making them available). Krug doesn’t shy away from archiving the atrocities of the Holocaust in alignment with her family’s (and hometown’s) history. The idea of HEIMAT (detailed on slide 3 here - swipe!) is explored deeply and beautifully as she discovers more about ‘home’ and the past and what that means for the present, and even more-so the future. What that means for her pride — in herself, for country, for family… 👀 How difficult a thing it is to feel like you only know a version of yourself whom others have created for you. To feel such conflict between the actions of your ancestors and the life you are choosing to build for yourself. This book captivated me, moved me, and taught me. I weeped. What more can I ask for?! 🤷🏼 ❓Read BELONGING or other graphic memoirs? I’ve read graphic novels but not memoirs before! Let’s chit-chat it up 💬 🍄

🤠 LET’S GET CONQUERING 💪🏻 I am (finally, officially, legitimately) starting my January pages for LONESOME DOVE today. This is the 2024 pick for the #conqueraclassic series as hosted by @bookshelftville (@anniebjones05 and my very own hubster @shelfbyshelf team up to provide monthly content on their listening journey and it’s always 🔥). I am participating for the first time this year and couldn’t be more excited. I’ve busted out the ole #conqueraclassic mug and some tea too ☕️ 🐴 I haven’t done a lot of reading about the American West, so I’m definitely ready to dig into this more modern-day classic that I’ve heard talk of my entire life…my eyes are finally on the prize and I’m not letting it get away from me any longer! That being said, I’m also using Pulitzer Prize winner LONESOME DOVE as my #bigbookreading2024 challenge prompt for a “The One That Got Away” 👀 I am looking forward to an adventurous and emotional journey with this book throughout the year and can’t wait to talk about it with any and all of you fine folx and my fellow Patreon community friends over at @bookshelftville 👥 ❓Have you read LONESOME DOVE? ❓What are your fav modern-day or more traditional classics? ❓What are you conquering this week? This year? Let’s chit-chat it up 💬 💪🏻

📚 THE CURRENT READING ROTATION 📚 Hi friends 👋🏻 — I’m at jury duty today…patiently awaiting either selection or release while toiling my way through these four books that are in my current rotation. I never used to be someone who thought they could read multiple books at a time — clearly, things change 🤭 📖📖📖📖. This particular lineup is great for a day of sitting and waiting; the mix of genres and voices telling such different stories leaves me no room or excuse for boredom! I have posted a couple stories and/ or posts about both THE COVENANT OF WATER and INÉS OF MY SOUL, both of which still have me solidly hooked in. I added in LIGHT FROM UNCOMMON STARS as part of my #shimmeringworlds challenge and BELONGING for the #readtheworldchallenge — it is a German woman’s graphic memoir of reckoning with her identity, history and her homeland. Visually stunning. I’m all in. Can’t wait to share more thoughts on all of these soon! One or more may also be in the running for a full review and mani pairing 👀 💅🏼 ❓what’s in your current rotation of reads? What are you trying to get through this month? What reads would you take to jury duty??🧑🏽‍⚖️ let’s chit chat it up 💬 💖

1/5/2024, 5:00:05 PM

📚 FIRST FRESH READ OF 2024 ☀️ INÉS OF MY SOUL by Isabel Allende is a novel of historical fiction and begins with an elderly Inés constructing a memoir of her life. The reader then subsequently follows her narration surrounding the relationships and the exploits of her travels from Spain to ‘conquering’ the country of Chile and founding the city of Santiago. 🇨🇱 This is my first fresh read of 2024 and I’m not too far in — but far enough in to know two things: 1). I like the book so far and 2). I’m curious about any commentary or critique that will be present regarding conquistadors/ conquering of indigenous lands…🤔 This book checks a lot of boxes for me: it’s set in a country other than US or UK, it’s got a diverse cast of characters, it is a work of translated literature (translated from the original Spanish “Inés del alma mía” by Margaret Sayers Peden), and is historical fiction — which is a fav genre!!! I love connecting stories to their factual events, even if it’s just a loose inspiration. IT’S FUN! 😋🤭🎉 This is also one of the reads for my #readtheworldchallenge on @the.storygraph. I’m excited to continue this journey with Inés, who was, respectfully, a pretty badass lady. Look her up if you have a chance, and consider giving this book some of your time. ❓What fresh reads are you getting into this week? What kind of books check a lot of boxes for you? Do you like historical fiction? Let’s chit-chat it up in the comments 💬

👀 FOMO READS 📚 Hi friends 👋🏻— anyone else having some bad book FOMO around this time of year?! Seeing everyone’s year-end recaps made me ruminate about the many books I saw read, reviewed, and loved by so many (including some major award winners 🏆) and did not actually read myself this year!! I’m including a lineup of the ten books causing me the most FOMO on all of y’all’s top read lists! I can’t wait to read all of these books as soon as possible ⏰ ⚡️ ❓❓ did you get to any and/or all of these awesome 2023 reads? Are you surprised by any of these books I didn’t get to?! Are there any books giving you a major case of FOMO 😟?! #bookstagram #books #readersofinstagram #bookfomo #gayreader #nonbinaryreader #readingreflections #anticipatedreads

📊 2023 Reading Stats 📚 Hi friends 👋🏻 so, today I published my last monthly 2023 reading update post on my personal account (@theonlyrainb0w ). I thought it would be fun to look at some of the data* from my 2023 reading journey on this new account and to talk about what goals we have for the upcoming year! Yes, data is fun to me. Spreadsheets and charts? 🤤 📈 In 2023, I read 61 books, coming in at a total of 23,868 pages. Now, 10,206 of those were either physical or ebook ‘pages’, while the remaining pages were listened to on audio summing to 416.55 hours (if you’re reading at 1.0 speed…which I am certainly not 😂 - club 1.75x for me most of the time). If you want to see the specific books that I read throughout the year, they are all featured over on my personal account (@theonlyrainb0w) and I am going to make a highlight reel of the posts soon on this page. So, size does matter — I read a majority of books in the 300-499 page range, with only 15% being 500+ pages (that’s 9 books 📚). One of my goals for 2024 is to read a lot more nonfiction - like…A LOT more 😂. That is a tiny 7% (4 books) of my 2023 reading record and I am ashamed. I’ll be posting soon about other goals and hopes for 2024 reading! ❓how many books did you read this year? What format do you typically engage with most? Do you have a massively unbalanced genre pie graph too?!?! *📊Data compiled using @the.storygraph (and they are releasing charts for us to share soon so I’ll probably share more then too 😂🫶🏻)

📕 MEET THE BOOKSTAGRAMMER 💅🏼 Hiiii 👋🏻 — it’s nice to ‘meet’ you! I’m Tyler (they/he/she) and I’m joining #bookstagram to kickoff 2024, although I’m clearly launching a few days early because this account is a Christmas gift to myself. 💝 🤭 After reconnecting with my love of reading throughout 2023, I wanted a space to post more meaningful thoughts about books, review/ write about books, and read/ discuss books with the vast community of book lovers on insta! 📚 See more about me and some of my bookish favs on the slides! I’m married to @shelfbyshelf so I’ve been entrenched in #bookstagram happenings to an extent, but I can’t wait to connect with all of you, new friends and existing, to chat about all things reading! I really like to work with my nail artist to create designs inspired by books — covers, themes, vibes — and I am looking forward to showcasing those connections along with featured book reviews! 💅🏼 On Slide 4, you can see a sampling of some of my favorite books - it’s HARD for me to choose favorites, but you’ll get a good idea of some highlights: 🧚‍♀️ Peter Pan 🧬 Homegoing 🦸🏼‍♂️ The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay 🌚 The Fifth Season 🧁 Congratulations, The Best Is Over 👤 Gone Girl 🏫 The Secret History Thanks for checking out the page! I hope you follow, and leave me a comment below to introduce yourself, even if I already know you! What is your favorite book/ genre/ author/ whatever? Do you have questions for ME? 🧐 Let’s chit-chat it up! 💬

My love for music knows no bounds. Many of my favourite songs tell a story, both inspired by the singer's personal life and their endless imagination. So, naturally, I took a page out of their books and created a story out the art that they've blessed me with. But seriously, I'm so excited to finally share this side of my book with you. Music is quite literally the biggest inspiration for The Third Place. Each song represents a major scene or vibe, and I've cried to every single one of them during my darkest hours (or whenever really) because that's how much they mean to me. This isn't the complete playlist, but these songs are the ones that played the biggest roles in The Third Place. I'll be sharing more music in future posts and stories, so be on the lookout out for that! . . . . . . . . . . #thethirdplace #writingplaylist #writingmusic #kpop #rockmusic #altrock #altmusic #alternative #pop #popsongs #writinginspo #writinginspiration #nonbinarywriter #nonbinaryreader #enby #asianwriters #asianauthors #britishasianwriter #writersofig #amwriting #writinglife #writergram #writersunite #writingcommunity #wip #wipcontent #workinprogress #authorsofinstagram #magicrealism #speculativefiction

These people aren't side characters since they will only be making cameo appearances in the book (unless I change my mind further along the planning stage), but they do play a huge role in shaping Ren and May as people before the story's beginning. And before you ask, yes, they are alive. Most of them. PS. Keep an eye out for Jules. I may have something planned for them in the future 👀 . . . . . . . . . . #writinginspo #writinginspiration #nonbinarywriter #nonbinaryreader #enby #writersofig #amwriting #writinglife #writingcommunity #wip #wipcontent #workinprogress #fictionwriter #writersfollowwriters #writingsociety #writergram #authorsofinstagram #fantasybook #fantasybookstagram #fantasyworld

IT'S FINALLY HERE!! After days of writing and erasing and hemming and hawing, my WIP introduction post is finally here! As some of you may know, I've been working on a master document for my WIP for the past month. It's far from complete, but I've got my main characters down, at least. I've left out some things for brevity's sake (and spoilers, of course), but everything will be revealed in due time. I might do a side characters post sometime in the future, too. And before you ask, no, I didn't draw any of my characters or commission them. All images were made on @alohasushicore's Picrew (https://picrew.me/ja/image_maker/257476). The picture in the background and the last slide is "Sonder" by @pascalcampionart. I don't remember how I came across this image, but it's what I've been using as a reference for the "vibe" of my WIP. Bit of a heavy one, this one. This is the first time I've ever written my history down on a page (and on Canva, no less). It might resonate with some of you. It might just be an entertaining read to others. But I'm hoping this will give you guys a better idea of who I am as a writer and as a person. I've realised one thing as I was writing this though. No matter how many hobbies I try out and no matter how many times I change my career, writing will always be my one true love. But to end on a lighter note, I'll upload my WIP introduction next so be on the lookout for that! After trawling through the #meethewriter tag, I've realised I've done my original introduction post all wrong. I should've asked my old friend, Canva, for help and made a fun little slideshow for y'all instead. Oh, well. Here's my second go at an introduction. Swipe to see a picture of me (sans face reveal) meeting one of my favourite authors, the queen of historical fantasy, @kuangrf. I got my hardback copy of Babel signed that day. My cards of the day. I won’t go into their meanings because I feel that daily card pulls are very personal. But if you feel pulled to do so, I invite you to meditate on one or all and see how they feel for you. October is the busiest month for us Salem people. If you’re visiting from out of town and looking for a reading I strongly encourage you to book ahead of time. You can call @themagicparlor to schedule a reading. If you’re local and looking for a reading to guide you into the new year (Samhain) just send me a message and we’ll figure something out. Books that capture my ✨personality ✨ I interpreted this little bookish challenge as titles that captured the spirit of how I feel inside. As a nonbinary person, bucking my assigned gender to lean into the masc titles was freeing. They help me feel more of myself. Enjoy this little intro to me 💜 Titles: Entangled Life Boyfriend Material The Art of Gathering Lifting Heavy Things Conventionally Yours The Raven King Mister Impossible Summer Sons A Strange and Stubborn Endurance A Marvellous Light Make, Sew, Mend Tagged by @bex.hexandrecs but I’m very late so if you still want to do this and haven’t - here’s your sign! 📙 Let's talk about patriotism... • I'll be honest, I've never been the kind of person who feels particularly patriotic. I am aware that being American comes with a wealth of privileges, but I've also always been particularly prone to spotting the ways we falsely uplift the U.S. as the greatest country in the world when that is so plainly untrue for so many. • This country is built on atrocities, but instead of acknowledging that and working for reparations and toward a healthier future for all, many in this country—often the loudest among us—are proclaiming that those acts of violence and genocide are a thing of the past and that we should, in fact, no longer discuss them plainly because they might tarnish our national pride. • These are, of course, the same people who are now trying to reinvent the systematic elimination of groups of people they don't understand. • As a nonbinary person living in a deeply red state, the state government feels more and more like a looming threat, not an entity that exists to protect my rights as a North Dakotan and as an American. • So now more than ever, I'm not proud to be an American. Some more appropriate adjectives for how I feel include but are not limited to disheartened, ashamed, exhausted, and afraid. • • • • • 🏷️ #fourthofjuly #independenceday #ihateithere #queerreader #queerbookstagrammer #enbyreader #nonbinaryreader #lgtbqreader #queerbookstagram #nonbinary

📙 Yes, hello, hi, please go read this book. • I have been struggling a lot with some big feelings lately when it comes to advocacy. As a crisis advocate, I often feel overwhelmed when I can't fix every issue faced by the clients I work with. I feel the resounding urge to fix everything all the time all at once. It is, quite literally, the reason I'm in therapy right now, and I'm doing the work to figure out how to manage these feelings so I can be a better advocate for the communities I want to uplift. • To say that I needed this book on every level is putting it mildly. Kaitlin B. Curtice has crafted something so immensely thoughtful, full of practical guidance, positive mindsets, and resounding hope. In reading it, I feel affirmed in my advocacy journey while also being given more tools to continue doing the work I do within myself and for my community. (I even brought this book with me to therapy yesterday so I could gush about it.) • No matter where you are in your journey with advocacy, whether you've been at it for years or you haven't even engaged with it yet, this book is an essential read. • • • • • 🏷️ #mustread #diversifyyourbookshelf #readdiversebooks #indigenousauthor #antiracist #advocacy #queerbookstagrammer #nonbinary #enbypride #nonbinaryreader #findthemreading #bookreview #fivestarreads #livingresistance #kaitlinbcurtice #dothework

📙 Sorry this recap is late, I was busy being gay. • Happy Pride Month, lovies! I hope my fellow queer folks are taking some time to feel love, joy, support, and all things happy. I know it's hard these days, but queer joy is an act of resistance. • I read a pretty healthy amount in May, which is surprising to me because I feel like I barely made time for reading. As you can see, I am living for smut these days, since that's basically half of this stack. 😂 • Now that I'm firmly in my DNF era, I can happily tell you I enjoyed all of these books! Here are some thoughts on a few faves: • The Five by Hallie Rubenhold turned the lens away from the mysterious figure of Jack the Ripper and instead focuses on who they murdered. It is a rebuke of the generalized stereotypes that the world painted these women with, and I learned so much. Def recommend for my true crime homies. • Sharks in the Time of Saviors by Kawai Strong Washburn is pure perfection, even on rereading. I will never shut up about this book. • Boys and Oil by Taylor Brorby hit so hard. This is a must-read for everyone, honestly. Just read it and let Brorby wow you. • 💬 Read any of these? Any on your TBR?

6/8/2023, 8:03:23 PM

📙 Out here reading like Pride Month is every month (because it is)... • I've been meaning to pick up this book for a while. Even though I'm only through the first essay, I already feel so affirmed. I can already tell this book should be a must-read. • As a queer, nonbinary person, I struggle a lot with my identity, with putting it in the perceived hierarchy of importance of LGBTQIA+ issues, with not "looking" nonbinary, with correcting people on my pronouns, and with so many other things. I don't think this book will solve those things, but I think it's going to equip me with the knowledge, affirmation, and broader understanding to go out in the world more empowered and able to empower others. • Happy almost Pride Month, friendos. ✌🏼 Remember to try and love who you are every day. 🧡 • • • • • #nonbinary #nonbinarybooksta #enbyreader #nonbinaryreader #findthemreading #genderoutlaws #genderoutlaw #queerreads #queerbookstagrammer #queerallyear #pridemonth #lgbtqreads #currentlyreading #currentread

📙 Books are supposed to make us better... • ...happier, more informed, more compassionate, more thoughtful, more relaxed, more joyful, and... Well, you get it. • I can't stop thinking about all the ways books are under attack in North Dakota and in the U.S. as a whole. And it makes me feel queasy thinking about all the stories that might be labelled as inappropriate, as obscene, as banned. • History tells us why they go after the books first, even if they don't realize it. Books with uncomfortable subjects go first, but then it's the conversations, next it's the available media, then it's the way of life. Banning books in the guise of protecting children is building a future where those children won't have the tools to critically think about the information presented to them. • Anyway, I'm still so mad about it, because my state is on the verge of passing veto-proof bills that will make everyone's lives less enriched and more challenging. All this in a state that claims to be anti-government overreach. • Next election, remember who wanted to silence stories like mine when you cast your ballot. Ask yourself if they really seem fine with stopping there. • Thanks for coming to my ted talk. ✌🏼 • #nonbinaryreader #enbyreader #findthemreading #lgbtqbookstagram #queerbookstagrammer #bansoffourbooks #readingisntacrime #readingisessential #readbannedbooks #readingisfundamental #diversifyyourbookshelf #queerstories

In previous years I was trying my damn hardest to get my yearly list of queer releases even close to 100 titles and this year we're already past 60 just within the first 4 months. We're late to posting this, but please support us this week in the #transrightsreadathon 💙💗🤍💗💙 I will be posting the link to where to donate in our LinkTree While I do not personally identify as a trans person, as a person who is nonbinary, this is something this super close to myself and Delta as well. We do not ask that you donate if you are not where you can, but any money to the Trans Health Legal Fund helps members of the trans communities. Throughout the week, we will be posting books that feature trans and nonbinary characters, as well as books written by trans and nonbinary authors.

📙 I haven't stopped thinking about this book for a week... • ...and yet I still feel like nothing I could say about it, especially as a white person, would do it justice. It's outstanding, mind-expanding, honest, poignant, unrestrained, and so much more. • Quite frankly, to hold a deeper understanding of the experiences of indigiqueer folks, it's a must read. • To Joshua Whitehead, if you happen to read this, I just want to say thank you. It is an honor and a privilege to have read these essays. 🧡 • • • • • 🏷️ #nonbinaryreader #enbyreader #queerbookstagrammer #findthemreading #makinglovewiththeland #joshuawhitehead #indigenousstories #indigenousbooks #indigenousauthors #diversifyyourbookshelf #lgbtqreads #queerreads #essays

📙 I am so excited to share this one with Emma's Book Club! • Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer is, in my opinion, required reading. It's filled with wisdom, grace, hope, and so much more. It will fundamentally change your understanding of the relationship between humans and, well... Everything else. Most importantly, it contains invaluable lessons for how each of us can better respect, value, and protect this floating rock in space we call home. • As always, Emma's Book Club is open to anyone who'd like to join, no matter how much of the book you read (or didn't read). • I work together with @zandbroz to host this monthly book club at @jasper.fargo, and it's been such an amazing way to connect with fellow readers in my community. • WHEN: Tuesday, April 4th at 7 PM WHERE: Jasper Hotel • Don't forget! If you decide to snag a physical copy of the book, you can get a discount on it at Zandbroz by mentioning the book club. ☺️ • • • • • #bookclubpick #bookclubreads #braidingsweetgrass #robinwallkimmerer #indigenousstories #indigenousauthor #indigenousbooks #emmasbookclub #nonbinary #nonbinaryreader #enbyreader #findthemreading #nonfiction #bookrecs
