Excuse me for my snail’s pace update on my finances 😂 I have 4 different categories of savings. 1. Emergency fund - I have so far saved 5.5K€ and 4.5K€ to be saved to refill the emergency fund. I used some amount from my emergency fund last year for some real emergencies and now I have to rebuild it. This fund is in addition to my insurances which I already have for Health and Unemployment. 2. Stocks&ETFs - I am aggressively investing in stocks and ETFs. I have already achieved more than 50% of what I wanted to invest for this whole year. I will not be doing much this month except to collect my dividends and reinvest them. 3. First Home Fund - This years target is to save 20K € which seems like a big goal but I will try my best to achieve it. I spent quite a lot last week on my trip to Portugal, so wasn’t left with much to put into this fund. 4. Sinking Fund - This fund is to save some amount for a new laptop. I love waking up and seeing my vision board first thing in the morning 🌅 Vision boards really help to bring your thoughts and ideas to life but what next? I look at my board regularly to give me motivation and remind me of my focus and goals but they aren’t just going to come to you because you’ve made a pretty board. Every month I write a mini list of goals/tasks that I want to complete that month and use the vision board as reference as well as my list of goals for the year to keep myself on the right track. I try to pick at least 1 thing from each section of my goals! This month a couple of things that have been added to my to do list are: -book a 5km run -sort blinds out for my house -gym consistency -book my next trip Specific goals are the most affective for example, booking a 5km as that is clear cut what I’m expecting from myself. Things like ‘gym consistency’ are much more loose but I’m ok with that as I know what I expect from myself regarding consistency. Hello all 👋 It’s pay day for us. I’ve paid the regular bills due, left $50 in our checking as cushion, sent $67.19 to mortgage (prin. only) & sent $1,000 to my Roth🥳 leaving a balance of $4,500👏 Note: - I’ve decided to pay an extra $67.19 to our mortgage. I want to do overpayments of this amount every month for this year to see what the difference will be in interest. - I’ve been investing my Roth contributions into a mutual fund. (VFIAX) - My son’s car was towed to a body shop on 1/4. We found out that his broken part is covered under an open recall and everything will be covered including the tow by the manufacturer, thank goodness. The shop told us that it would’ve cost us 3-7K otherwise 🫢 We were told it could take up to two weeks to have it all done which sucks but it’s not 7K suckage lol - We got a bunch of snow here which caused school cancellation on 2/9 & 2/10, they went today and have Friday and Monday off 😂 - The budget & meal plan are set & I’ve picked up the groceries needed for the week. It was my goal setting that helped me save and invest in 2023 and here are my financial goals for 2024. I had a separate fund for sinking fund last year but I didn’t find it very useful. So, not saving in my sinking fund this year but I will focus on the ones here and whatever is left is for me to spend whenever needed. 1.Emergency Fund - This is my highest priority as I need to be prepared for any rainy day fund requirements like in case of a job loss, medical emergencies. I have 4.5K€ from last year. So this year I will have to save 5.5K € more which should be achieved by mid of the year. 2. Real Estate Fund- This is for the first home deposit and I have saved some amount from last year. This year I plan to save 20K€. 3. Dividends- I made a little more than 300$ last year and this year the plan is to reach a thousand euro. For this to achieve, I have to keep my investing consistent and keep looking for good dividend stocks 4. Interest - I am earning around 40€ every month now and since I will be saving more next year for real estate, I need to make sure I find the right HYSA and make the most out of available HYSA accounts to earn interest. 5. Stocks & ETFs - I already invested a 300€ this month in stocks and ETFs. Goal is to invest 10K € minimum this year. This will not be difficult to achieve. 6. Side Hustle - I don’t want to make my life all about working 24x7 and instead focus on outdoor activities, read books, upskill etc in spare time. So, I am just trying to take it easy and mindfully invest and save. Hey Peeps A week of 2024 is already over and here I am back after some time off with my personal goals for 2024. 2023 was a mix of bad and good experiences. The year tested me but here I am trying to be stronger, trying to get better and take control of my life. This account isn’t just about the finances but also about improving other aspects of my life too. Setting some goals like I did last year. 1. Setting healthy boundaries :- I have always been a people pleaser and this has a lot to do with how I was brought up. This year will be about saying no and taking care of my mental health that has taken a toll just trying to make people happy. 2. Physical Activities- I have been hiking since forever and I learned swimming last year. This year will be to engage in physical activities again like hiking, biking or swimming, one of the activity every week. 3. Meditation - This is difficult to keep in practice but I realize I need it more than ever. I am trying to apply for a meditation retreat again to work on the basics and keep it in practice till it becomes a habit 4. Reduce Screen Time - This is so easier said than done but there is 1 thing that I improved on in 2023. I stopped looking at phone before going to bed, stopped taking mobile to bedroom. This has definitely helped me improve my sleep. Now I feel uncomfortable taking phone to my bedroom. This is an achievement, a small needed change. This year I will bring it down to 3 hours avg. 5. Read Books - I had set a goal to read 12 books in 2023 and I read 10 which is a great improvement as compared to 2022 or before. My target for 2024 is to reach the 12 books. One goal that I missed to add is to cut down on SUGARRR. As the year has come to an end, here is my dividend comparison between 2022 and 2023. It’s not huge but what matters is it’s growing. I am not completely focussed on dividends alone but I am investing in growth stocks too but some great companies gives good dividends too. Every cent earned in dividends is reinvested into the market. The dividend that I earned this year would have been enough to take care of my mobile bill (half of it is taken care by my company), and I did absolutely nothing to earn it 😀. Can’t wait to see it grow in 2024. The day my dividends would take care of my monthly rent/mortage for atleast couple of months would be a dream come true and of course the ultimate dream would be to have enough in dividends to take care of my monthly bills I love the community here and I don’t hesitate to show with real numbers how far I have come in the last 2 years of investing consistently. It’s possible to make our money grow. Investing is not just for rich people but also for each one of us. Start with 100 and keep the consistency. It will take time for the investment to do the real magic and I haven’t even witnessed it yet. But I am excited for what future holds for me financially. Hey Peeps Last update of this year on my monthly savings. This includes just these main 4 categories that I try to save monthly since last year. I still haven’t calculated my net worth. Emergency Fund:- I posted an update on this yesterday. I was on track until mid of the year to have a fully funded emergency fund but things went downhill for me in my personal life for several reasons. As they say life is not always a bed of roses, I had a bad second half of the year. I had to spend money and here I am now left with just 45%. I am not upset about this as I still have a job that pays me well and have health insurance and unemployment insurance but I will refill it to achieve the 10K goal again so that in cases of emergencies, my investments won’t be impacted. Stocks and ETFs - Super stoked to have achieved the investment goal here for the year and for the great year closing with all greens. I have invested more than I set the goal for. Real Estate Fund - Initially I planned to save just 5K € but then when I achieved that sooner than expected, I extended the goal amount mid of the year and surpassed that too. I didn’t had any plan to invest in a home yet but now it seems I need to aim for a higher goal next year and save enough for the down payment. Sinking Funds- Purpose for this was just to set aside some money for travel and some other wishlists. I used up most of it and whatever is left will be used for travelling during New Year. Hey Peeps Posting my emergency fund update after a long time. My goal for this year was to have a fully funded emergency fund i.e 10K € by end of the year and I was on track until certain things in my personal life went downhill and I had to spend quite a lot of money. I am glad that the amount already saved in my emergency fund helped me cover all those expenses without impacting my savings for investing in stocks and my savings for my first home. I still have 45% amount saved on top of statutory insurances for unemployment and health care. This is exciting!! I started my investing journey close to 2.5 years ago but the first few months were all mistakes and losses. I had no idea how things work in stock market and all I did was go by hype and lost some amount. Gradually, I learned I was doing it all wrong, I read books, followed right people and used all resources to learn to get started in a better and more conscious way of investing. I made it a goal to reach 20K euro invested before end of the year 2023 and I have achieved. It was a total of around 10K invested in this year to reach 20K overall investment in stocks and ETFs. Can’t wait to see this grow consistently each month though I know this journey will test my patience but I am here to stay and celebrate when the great compounding game starts to take effect. I started budgeting quite late. I didn’t realise I needed it for several reasons I believed in, which are just myths 😅 1. I wasn’t completely debt free. I had a small debt remaining but I was prioritising paying it back but this definitely doesn’t mean I don’t need a budget. I didn’t consider how I would deal with my finances in case of an emergency. 2. Future is uncertain and I always thought what’s the point of saving for a future and why not live life now until I realised I had no money saved and invested for myself even though I have been working for a few years already 😐 3. I felt it would be exhausting to keep track of where my money is going every month 😣. I keep budgeting very relaxed and simple. My current income is fixed, so my budget is simple it’s 40:20:40 and a separate bank account for each. 4. So many people consider budgeting as depriving ourselves of all the fun and so did I. It doesn’t have to make you sad or deprive you of what you love but it’s to make sure you are also saving some amount every month and knowing where your money is going. For all the fun, you can always create sinking funds 💚 5. Saving and budgeting is many a times about psychology too. Tracking every penny would have been exhausting for a person like me who gets overwhelmed easily 😅. So, I don’t track every penny but I know how much I want to save every month and make sure a minimum of 40% of my salary is saved. Rest is spend on essentials and wants. . . . PayDay is near and all the urge to spend money gets stronger. # How do you plan payday? I have my deductions automated, the day my salary hits the account, amount gets deducted from salary account to different accounts. Before I plan to spend, I have check if I have enough available to spend. Apart from saving and investing suggestion, there are few other things you can do to not go broke by next month. 1. PayDay sale - By month end, we start getting lots of discounts and payday sale ads on our social media and emails, ignore such ads unless there is something that you have been planning on buying for quite sometime. 2. Lotteries and Gambling- The chance of winning a lottery is extremely low but still so many people buy tickets everyday and go for gambling for quick gains and ends up losing a lot of money. 3. Bills - Pay your bills as soon as your salary is credited. Failing to pay bills on time will lead to you paying much more than needed due to late fees. 4. Budgeting - Budgeting does to have to be strict and time consuming. Personally for me, keeping different accounts for checking, saving, investing in works like a charm. Avoid not budgeting after pay day, doing so will end up you spending lot of money on things you don’t need. 5. Retirement - Too often we feel it’s too early to save for retirement and by the time we realise it’s time to save money, it’s quite late. Start saving small early but do save every month. This just doesn’t have to be keep money in a savings account but also investing into income generating assets. . . . . . No one has a perfect life. We have our set of failures, set backs and disappointments but in the midst of all things that are going wrong, there are also things that are going right, things that we often miss because the setbacks feels so big. I am trying to make it a habit to be grateful for the little things in life that makes me smile, things that makes life a little bit better. August was good, I had a good vacation, good time with family and with some friends. I am also grateful that I work in an industry where I can work remotely from anywhere in the world but my company has a policy of only 30 days of remote work per year which is also great! Hello Peeps! Here are some real numbers on my savings status of 2023 so far! Emergency Fund- I didn’t had an emergency fund and I was expecting to have a fully funded emergency fund by end of August but unfortunately I couldn’t complete this goal due to some amount that I gave some amount to my father from July salary and also due to my recent trip. But I do have enough at the moment for atleast 4 months of expenses. Stocks & ETFs - I haven’t missed any month on investing. I am on track to have 20K $ invested by end of the year. Real Estate Fund - My focus for this year was to have the fully funded emergency fund and focus on stocks and ETF investment. I planned to have 5K € saved by end of the year which I have saved already and now I have updated my goal to have 10K saved in this year. And it’s 61% progress, 39% more to go and I will achieve it! Sinking Fund - I am progressing here on saving small amounts for future business and also on purchasing a laptop but not much on the other ones. . . . . . Planning them also means making grocery lists, and as long as you’re sticking to your lists, you’ll be saving money. 🥕🍎 Let’s face it, it almost doesn’t make sense to have cable anymore with how expensive it is these days. Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO to name a few costs way less per month even with no ads.
