Paleolithic art comprises of cave paintings and incised design like those at Chauvet–Pont d’Arc and Lascaux Grotto in France and small sculptures such as the "Venus of Willendorf." Why these were made is still unknown, but there are many theories. We know the humans during this time lived as hunter-gathers, could it be that these paintings were a way for them to tell what season it was? Perhaps it was a way to record historical events? Are these small, female figurines an indicator of a matriarchal society? Or could it be that these are just artifacts made from human creativity for the sole purpose of making art? What do you think? . . . #TheArtPlace #TAPintoArt #PaleolithicArt #LowerPaleolithic #MiddlePaleolithic #UpperPaleolithic #PrehistoricArt #SmallSculpture #CavePaintings #ReliefCarvings #IncisedDesigns

Another chance for Sahra Talamo to underline the significance of radiocarbon dating within Paleolithic Archaeology at the Ion Beam Physics Seminar, tomorrow 2PM ETH Zurich- Department of Physics. As a matter of fact, her speech “Unveiling Human-Environment Dynamics: Advancements in High-Precision Radiocarbon Dating for Paleolithic Chronology” will focus on radiocarbon dating precision and accuracy as well as on its remarkable potential in unveiling our past, highlighting pivotal events such as Homo Sapiens dispersal in Europe, encounter with Neanderthals and human response to climate fluctuations and changes. #ETHZurich #Seminar #Talk #Discorso #Radiocarbondating #Datazionealradiocarbonio #Higherprecision #Piùaltaprecisione #Betterresolution #Migliorrisoluzione #Accuracy #Accuratezza #Calibrationcurve #Curvadicalibrazione #PaleolithicArchaeology #ArcheologiaPaleolitica #MiddlePaleolithic #PaleoliticoMedio #UpperPaleolithic #PaleoliticoSuperiore #HomoSapiensDispersal #DiffusioneHomoSpaiens #EncounterwithNeanderthal #IncontroconNeanderthal #Climatechanges #Cambiamenticlimatici #HumanEvolution #Evoluzioneumana #Crucialevents #Eventicruciali @erc_research @ethzurich @unibo

This is the Biface, otherwise known as a hand axe, from Blombos Cave during Africa's Middle Stone Age back around 71,000 years; Discovered by archaeologist Christopher Henshilwood in the late 1990s and early 2000s while excavating the caves on South Africa's southern coast. Bifaces (composed of silcrete), were made by Hominin predecessors of modern humans. Bifaces include various types of rock, such as flint and obsidian, which are carefully knapped to make two symmetrical faces. The handaxes various uses include cutting wood and other plants, skinning, digging, and could be attached to a stick to be used as a throwing/stabbing tool for hunting. It's been debated that the hand axe was adopted as a social artifact and was significant beyond its main functions, and its discovery is important for understanding the technological and cultural development of early human cultures in the region. This tool stems from previously larger bifaces, which then became stricken from cores to create more refined flakes during the Middle Palaeolithic Age; This new method may have helped humans adapt to more demanding environments and indicated symbolic or spiritual beliefs. #middlepaleolithic #sharpandpointy #BlombosCave #paleolithicera #lifechanging #archeology #handaxe #stoneage #tools #rocks #biface @uas_sbu Image credit: Groeneveld, Emma. End of a day full of teaching and looking at artefacts. These three were some favourites, from a site called Lion's Pit near Thurrock, excavated in the 1980s and 1990s. The first is a natural heart-shaped hole in the end of a tool made on a Levallois flake. The second is a super thin flake (less than a millimeter in most places) that was so translucent that you could see the artefact identifier through the flint. The third is a big broken Levallois flake, where the pieces have remained together even after all this time. These artefacts are all around 250,000 years old, made by early Neanderthals. #lithic #lithics #levallois #levalloisflake #cortex #flint #flintflake #flakes #scraper #flinttools #loveheart #neanderthaltool #neanderthal #homonenderthalensis #homoheidelbergensis #stonetools #stoneagetools #stoneage #palaeolithic #britishpalaeolithic #middlepaleolithic #archaeology #britisharchaeology #academia #teaching

The award for today's most beautiful flake goes to this one from the Lion's Pit tramway excavation back in 1984. I love the way the patination looks like a river - fitting for an artefact found in river terrace deposits and made by people whose lives revolved around the Thames over 200,000 years ago. I photograph things on squared paper to make it easier for me to draw them to scale later on, being as the squares are 1cm x 1cm. Jubbah Rock Art is a window into the lives of ancient civilizations that inhabited the Hail region of Saudi Arabia. The carvings show various aspects of their culture, such as hunting, feasting, and religious rituals. They also provide clues about their clothing, hairstyles, and weapons. Some of the carvings are among the oldest rock art in the world, dating back to the Middle Paleolithic period. 📷: @zazahardyinsaudi #explorearabia #saudi #arabia #ksa #saudiarabia #saudi_nature #sauditourism #visitsaudi #exploresaudi #discoversaudiarabia #jubbahrockart #unesco #rockart #neolithic #petroglyphs #history #culture #travel #wanderlust #hail #hailregion #sandstone #rock #rockartheritage #ancientart #humanhistory #middlepaleolithic

FIRE for day 20 of #prehistovember I did skip a few but I haven't have all the time I wished for these and I needed to have a little rest for the weekend. No worries, will come back to the missing one right after prompt 31 😄 As you know, fire is mostly accepted to have been "domesticated" by Homo erectus. Although they might not have known how to kindle it yet, they surely knew how to keep and use natural fired. Hence a little sketch of a H. erectus family warming up around their own campfire. I am really enjoying this challenge ant it is great to see all of your artwork, writings and comments. Middle Palaeolithic handaxe. This example is stained white and orange due to the deposit in which it has been lying in for thousands of years. Recent damage shows the original colour of the flint to be black. This tool was made by Neanderthal up to around 245,000 years ago. This is from sandscaping material dredged several miles off the East Anglian coast and deposited on a local beach in order to prevent coastal erosion. Handaxes were a multipurpose tool. Modern experiments show that they are particularly effective for butchering animals. Proud to have worked with this incredible and diverse Spanish research group to date bone and charcoal remains from the crucial Middle Paleolithic site of Cova Simanya. Both the anatomical features and radiocarbon dating of the site bones pointed out they are older than 50,000 years ago and belong to Neanderthals. Together with stone tools and faunal assemblage they allowed a better understanding and reconstruction of the story and the importance of this archaeological site. . . . . . Medicine in the Paleolithic . While the Paleolithic lacked modern medical care in the form of pills, licensed doctors, and injections, it was not some time of endless illness and the inability to care for the afflicted. There is actually a surprising amount of data, indirect of course, which supports the existence of communal care in both middle and upper Paleolithic societies, from both Homo sapiens and Neanderthals. On the bones that remain, for example in the case of the Neanderthal remains known only as Shanidar I, we see broken bones that had healed in a way which would have demanded medical intervention and communal care long before the individual was buried as well as complex and surgically sound amputations which again were long healed by the time the individual died much later on. In some cases we can see that illness got the better of people, and of course we cannot neglect this as a common factor in mortality for our species. One site which is especially interesting if you’re keen on Upper Paleolithic plant use, is Aghitu-3 in Armenia, where there is an abundance of plant remains preserved in the cave strata, many of which were likely used as medicine and food/flavourings for food, as well as for textile production and dyes. Many easily identifiable plants are medicinal, and pictured are just some of the smaller ones I found in my local area. Everything from coughs, bleeding, infection, insects, vitamin deficiency, energy levels, internal organ care, and indigestion can be treated with this little handful of plants, and this is just a snowflake on the tip of the iceberg. It would be reasonable to consider the people of the Paleolithic, who necessarily would have had to have had an incredibly in-depth understanding of their surroundings to survive, to be familiar with plants like these as well as familiar with more poisonous plants which are often the most medicinally useful in specific amounts and forms, with knowledge likely comparable to hunter-gatherers of the modern day. #paleolithic #upperpaleolithic #middlepaleolithic #prehistory #stoneage #gatherer #forage #medicine #plantmedicine #ancient #yarrow #clover #deadnettle

I've got to a good stopping point with this, and frustration is starting to lead to over-working. I think this is one that I need to put away and come back to next week. Swipe ➡️ to see the drawing next to the original. This is a page in my research notebook - along with doing and documenting research, I have a need to create and sometimes can't research unless I have. Today I've sat in bed and drawn and thought about drawing. There are days like that, and they make me very glad to be part time. Now it's time to get up and go to work. The photocopied drawings you can see in the background are by Mary Leakey, and I've been trying to imitate some of their techniques. Image 1 description: a drawing in black ink of a quartzite flake. It's got a large bulb at the top and a sliver of cortex above that. That surface of the flake is bumpy with the structure of the rock. Image 2 description: the drawing next to the flake it's drawn from. The flake is a brownish colour with some red towards the bottom. Life update 5: teaching (part 2) and Portuguese archaeology. In January, I was part of a teaching team that took over 120 first year undergraduates to Portugal. My role was to assist at one of the sites - a disused gravel quarry - in teaching the students about the flow of the Tagus (Tajo) and the hominins that lived around it, some 300,000 - 400,000 years ago. On the final day of the trip, around 30 students did various projects in the quarry which formed the basis of their final reports. Scroll through the photos to get an idea of the environments we were working in. The archaeology here is old. Based on the layer that it comes out of, it's at least 300,000 years old* - from the Lower/Middle Palaeolithic. The local material here is mainly quartzite and quartz, so it follows that most of the tools are quartzite. In the first photo, see if you can spot the massive flake in the second photo. Something unexpected that we found were two flint flakes. These are young, being made at some point in the Neolithic from flint imported from the north. They were found resting on the top of the upper sands, so there's no telling where they came from originally. The one pictured here came from one of the natural "shelves" on the quarry face that you can see in the final photo. Have a look in the comments for info on how we use gravel to work out what's going on when, and please feel free to ask questions! There's a lot that I wanted to include about Portugal's early history that I didn't have space for here. * See Cunha et al. Life update 4: working with the lithic collections held at @the_herbert_cov I've got a few back burner projects that I'm doing alongside the MRes, one of which involves documenting the collection of lithics (stone tools) held at the Herbert Art Gallery in Coventry. There are a bunch of research reasons for this, but the main one is personal: I want to learn more about the stone tools found around the area I grew up in. I visited the collection just before Christmas and will be going back for a few days next month. There's a lot of information missing about these artefacts, likely because it was never recorded in the first place or was lost during WW2, so it's been an absolute pleasure being able to fill in some of the gaps for the curator who looks after this collection. I also had no idea that there was such a wealth of material! Sadly there's a lot that was destroyed during the WW2 bombing of Coventry (some of the museum storage in the city centre took a direct hit) but a surprising amount has survived. Life update 2: In October 2022 I started an MRes (masters by research) at @geogdurham looking at the ways in which major river systems and hominin (humans, but before our species) occupation changed around the Anglian Glaciation. It's brilliant. Doing research makes me feel alive in ways that are hard to describe. From a fatigue perspective, it's been hard to adjust to working consistently, but I'm getting there. Being part time and having very understanding supervisors, across the geography and archaeology departments, has definitely helped too! The Anglian (aka marine isotope stage 12) was the last properly huge ice age that happened in Britain, almost half a million years ago. It did things like reroute the Thames, and it's no stretch to say that our capital city wouldn't be where it is today without it. In terms of archaeology, my research fits into the end of the Lower Palaeolithic and the start of the Middle Palaeolithic. The second image here gives you an idea of where the ice went during the Anglian [1] vs the last ice age we had (aka the Devensian) [2]. Because I get asked about the dinosaur print shirt: it's from @runandflyengland Image 1 description: Ellie looks confidently at the camera. They have short brown hair, light skin, and dark eyes. They look tired, and are wearing a dinosaur print shirt, rainbow lanyard, and black jacket. Here's a handaxe made from chert. This was originally going to be a Levallois core however I decided that the rock was a little too unpredictable and turned into this nice ovate handaxe (or biface). It was knapped with hammer stones. #neanderthal #middlepaleolithic #flintknapping #hammerstone #palaeolithic #stoneaxe #biface

+++Archaeology of Compassion+++ Why do we wince when someone hits their thumb with a hammer? Why do we feel touched when someone else cries? Why do we help each other? In the animal kingdom, even minor injuries are often fatal. However, finds of human remains show that even 50,000 to 100,000 years ago, severely injured individuals survived with fractures and possibly even amputations. No question, these people survived because other people took care of them and nursed them. This suggests that care and compassion are very old human characteristics that were evolutionarily of great advantage. Yet why are so many wars fought today? Why do we hurt and kill each other? What do you think? © MONREPOS | RGZM | Photo: @mariesjovold #paleomonrepos #rgzm #archaeology #archaeologist #archaeologylovers #archaeologylife #archaeologylovers #prehistory #neuwied #palaeolithic #paleolithic #middlepaleolithic #neanderthal #pleistocene #humanevolution #behuman #humankind #care #compassion #empathy #eachother #love #Shanidar #Neanderthals #peace #mariesjøvold #peaceforearth #helpingothers #peaceonearth #bethereforeachother

#BrahmanCulture #Brahman #Culture #BrahmanDharm #Brahman #Dharm #BrahmanDharma #Dharma The history of Eurasia is the collective history of a continental area with several distinct peripheral coastal regions: the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Western Europe, linked by the interior mass of the Eurasian steppe of Central Asia and Eastern Europe. Perhaps beginning with the Steppe Route trade, the early Silk Road, the Eurasian view of history seeks establishing genetic, cultural, and linguistic links between Eurasian cultures of antiquity. Much interest in this area lies with the presumed origin of the speakers of the Proto-Indo-European language and chariot warfare in Central Eurasia. #Prehistory #LowerPaleolithic Fossilized remains of Homo ergaster and Homo erectus between 1.8 and 1.0 million years old have been found in Europe (Georgia (Dmanisi), Spain), Indonesia (e.g., Sangiran and Trinil), Vietnam, and China (e.g., Shaanxi). (See also:Multiregional hypothesis.) The first remains are of Olduwan culture, later of Acheulean and Clactonian culture. Finds of later fossils, such as Homo cepranensis, are local in nature, so the extent of human residence in Eurasia during 1,000,000 - 300,000 ybp remains a mystery. #MiddlePaleolithic Geologic temperature records indicate two intense ice ages dated around 650000 ybp and 450000 ybp. These would have presented any humans outside the tropics unprecedented difficulties. Indeed, fossils from this period are very few, and little can be said of human habitats in Eurasia during this period. The few finds are of Homo antecessor and Homo heidelbergensis, and Lantian Man in China. After this, Homo neanderthalensis, with his Mousterian technology, emerged, in areas from Europe to western Asia and continued to be the dominant group of humans in Europe and the Middle East up until 40000-28000 ybp. Peking man has also been dated to this period. During the Eemian Stage, humans probably (e.g. Wolf Cave) spread wherever their technology and skills allowed. #Atheist #buddhaveeragautam #abhishekhuman #ritshekgautam #rajpriyagautam #sunghpriyagautam

Back to some genuine antiques and ancient art. Today, on the History Preservation Project - I received my stone tool back from lithic specialist, Benjamin Stermer. He’s confirmed that this small stone tool is indeed a Mousterian culture scraping/planing tool. It is most likely the work of Homo Neanderthalensis, a relict hominid that went extinct about 40,000 years ago. This example was found in a rock shelter in Plazac, Dordogne, Southwestern France. This small stone tool was made by a person who was biologically similar enough to reproduce with us (modern humans) but is considered to be a different species from us. #history #neanderhal #homoneanderthalensis #ancienthistory #earlyhuman #hominids #stonetools #archaeology #paleolithic #middlepaleolithic https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.1907828116

I’m thrilled to report that one of the ancient stone tools in my collection has been examined and scrutinized by a lithics specialist. They have confirmed that it is a Mousterian scraping tool found in France and the work of Homo Neanderthalensis. Neanderthals were a species of hominid that disappeared about 40,000 years ago. This is a reconstruction of the Saint Cesaire Neanderthal woman, based on remains found in France. I’ve decided to start a second novel while I work on the first one and recover. While trying to avoid giving too much away, this new story will be set sometime in the middle Paleolithic (approx. 245,000 to 45,000 years BP) and involve viruses and is a twist on the ghost story. #history #writing #stories #paleolithic #middlepaleolithic #stonetools

Striking the opposite edges of ridges in flint knapping is a technique that can level the surface of cores. It can also remove small thin pieces and microliths. This is because the shock of a strike must travel somewhere. #ancienthistory #earlyhuman #hominids #stonetools #archaeology #paleolithic #middlepaleolithic #upperpaleolithic #staywild #flintknapping

This is Keokuk chert from Iowa which is a type of stone that is really nice for knapping into stone tools. With the three beach stones above I will attempt to create an Acheulean hand axe from the lower Paleolithic period. I will be using the one in my collection for inspiration. The process can be hazardous so considerable caution must be taken when flaking these into tools. This includes wearing goggles, handling with gloves, wearing close-toed shoes, working over a large tarp, working outside or a very well ventilated area and covering legs with a thick leather or rubber pad. The Paleolithic period means Old Stone Age (Paleo = old / lithic = stone) and is Greek in origin. It lasted from about 300,000 years ago to about 11,000 years ago, transitioning into the Mesolithic, the Middle Stone Age. So the overwhelming majority of human history took place during pre-history in the Paleolithic and ninety percent of our existence has been as hunter-gatherers who relied on stone tools. #ancienthistory #earlyhuman #hominids #stonetools #archaeology #paleolithic #middlepaleolithic #upperpaleolithic #staywild #flintknapping If you are interested, check out ‘Acheulean Stone Tools | Late Genus Homo” by Professor Laura on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJ7bxvdJiGg https://australian.museum/learn/science/human-evolution/homo-sapiens-modern-humans/ https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsbl.2018.0286 https://www.e-education.psu.edu/geog3/node/838

I truly believe that balancing screen time for work and graduate school and doing something active with my hands is good for physical and mental health. Sewing, wood working, bone carving and hiking are good for the soul. Now I’m going to try knapping flint and other stone to make tools. From left to right are items from my stone tool collection ordered oldest to most recent: lower Paleolithic Acheulean hand axe found in Egypt, lower Paleolithic flint scraper (possibly a Neanderthal artifact), a Danish Neolithic axe and a Great Plains Native American archaic period projectile point. Flanked by the deer antlers my dog found a little over a year ago. history #neanderhal #homoneanderthalensis #ancienthistory #earlyhuman #hominids #stonetools #archaeology #paleolithic #middlepaleolithic #upperpaleolithic #antiques #archaicperiod #indigenous #staywild #flintknapping

The Gray's Inn Lane handaxe (left) and the Hoxne handaxe (right) are examples of some of the earliest tools in human history. Handaxes are prehistoric stone tools characteristic of the lower and middle Paleolithic periods. The examples here were made 350,000 - 400,000 years ago. The way these tools were used is a matter of debate. It's widely believed that they were used for butchering animals and possibly for digging and chopping down trees. Other theories suggest they could have been used as cores from which to extract more tools or projectiles for hunting animals. On the left, the Gray's Inn Lane handaxe was found near... Gray's Inn Lane... in London in 1679. It was originally thought to be associated with the Roman invasion because it was found with a prehistoric elephant. The Emperor Claudius brought elephants with him when he invaded Britain in 43 CE. On the right, the, or I should say, a, Hoxne handaxe was found at a site in Hoxne, Suffolk. This example was uncovered in 1797 but many examples have been found in the area even in recent times. . . . __________ #graysinnlane #biface #handaxe #lowerpaleolithic #middlepaleolithic #paleolithic #stoneage #oldstoneage #stonetools #johnconyers #prehistoric #britishmuseum #prehistory #prehistorictools #britishmuseumlondon #earlyhumans #paleolithictools #bifaces #hoxne #historyofthings #publichistory #historyblogger #historyblog

Yes, I'm still going 🇸🇦🇸🇦🇸🇦 These are rock carvings from the ancient city of Jubbah in Ha'il. The city lies on the old caravan route from Najd to the Mediterranean. Surrounded by the Nafud Desert, it's on a paleolake site providing sound soil and conditions for agriculture. The type of tool construction used by Neanderthals is called the Levallois Technique. This involved sourcing flint or other comparable material and flaking off pieces around the edges while visualizing the tool shape in the center. Once the edges were prepared the tool maker would hammer the material until a finished piece could be removed from the center. This would then be touched up and sharpened with various stones and antlers until a finished tool was satisfactory. The interesting thing about flint is that it is very tightly compressed sediment. #history #neanderhal #homoneanderthalensis #ancienthistory #earlyhuman #hominids #stonetools #archaeology #paleolithic #middlepaleolithic #upperpaleolithic #antiques

Today, on the History Preservation Project, a Neanderthal flint tool. Between approximately 80,000 and 40,000 years old, this Middle or Upper Paleolithic Mousterian tool might have been a flake from a larger piece and given a second thought by the tool maker to be used as a scraping implement. We can only speculate it’s purpose(s), but this was part of an extensive collection of the late collector, researcher and archaeologist Leo Stolzenbach. It was found quite a long time ago in a rock shelter in Dordogne, France. #history #neanderthal #middlepaleolithic #upperpaleolithic #archaeology #antiques #earlyhumans #homoneanderthalensis #hominids #flinttools
