Following his wedding, Prince Albert Duke of York [George VI], wrote a letter to his mother Queen Mary thanking her for her help, I find the letter utterly charming and I believe it helps show a different side to their mother-son relationship that is not often portrayed. : ‘…My darling Mama, I don’t quite know how to begin this letter to you as I have so much to thank you for in every way. I do hope you are not tired after all your exertions for the last few days, but I can only tell you how much I appreciated them as they did so help to make a success of the arrangements. I trust you thought the actual ceremony went off well, as I am afraid I was very nervous about it until it was over. You were kindness itself in all the help you gave me in choosing the silver & the china we needed at the beginning ; all the more so as I had very little idea of what we did want never having thought much about those things before… I do hope you will not miss me very much, though I believe you will as I have stayed with you so much longer than the brothers. I am very happy now with my little darling so perhaps our parting was made easier for me but still I did feel a pang at leaving my home… I remain Every your devoted boy Bertie’ Citation: RA QM/PRIV/CC11/40 📸: RCT #queenmary #kinggeorgvi #georgevi #maryofteck #princealbert #dukeofyork #princessmary #princessmaryofteck #queenmaryofteck #princessofwales #kinggeorgev #georgev #princegeorge #princegeorgeofwales #duchessofyork #georgeofwales #princeedward #kingedwardviii #edwardviii #dukeofwindsor #princessmaryprincessroyal #maryprincessroyal #princessroyal #countessofharewood #princehenry #princehenryofwales #henryofwales #dukeofgloucester #henrydukeofgloucester #princegeorgedukeofkent

This is letter from Princess Margaret of Connaught dated March 10th 1905, following her engagement to Prince Gustaf Adolf please note that I have done my best to decipher Margaret’s writing but as she admits her handwriting is untidy and I may have misread some parts and … is used for words I can’t make out : ‘My dear Mrs Leslie How can I thank you enough for your very dear letter & good wishes you sent me for which I am deeply grateful. I am so intensely truly happy that I can hardly yet realize what it all means, & as I think it all over again & again I wonder if it can be really true not a beautiful dream that will vanish away! God has indeed been very good to me!! As you say Egypt was an ideal place for a courtship & we both have grown very fond of it & mean to go back as soon as we can - I do hope you will soon make Gustaf’s acquaintance & I think you’ll like him… he’s not really a bit good looking & has to wear glasses which hide his nice dark blue eyes, he’s a good bit taller than me & very thin - fond of music, & pictures & all sorts of nice things, in fact he just suits me down to the ground & I think myself an extraordinarily fortunate girl - The only cloud in my otherwise cloudless sky is Mama being so sad at my going & Patsy & Arthur, I’ afraid they are very miserable & I don’t know what to do but I know I can trust you to try & cheer up Mama who feels it dreadfully - again many many thanks for your very kind letter… love from Patsy & myself Belive me dear Mrs Leslie Yours very sincerely Margaret. Forgive this untidy note but I have 53 letters to answer !! The twenty-fifth of April is the birthday of Princess Alice and Princess Mary. Not only do they share a birthday but they worked as nurses while their countries were at war. I thought it would be interesting to share excerpts from Queen Victoria’s journals: Birth of Princess Alice I have not been able to write in my Journal again, until now, an account of my confinement & I will proceed to continue the Journal (up to this day), with the help of notes. On the 25th of April after, getting hardly any sleep, soon after midnight, Dr Locock was sent for & at 5 minutes past 4, a fine, healthy girl was born, & all my sufferings had come to an end! The only person who was there, to whom the child could be shown, was Ld Liverpool. I felt extremely quiet & comfortable afterwards & slept a good deal. My beloved Albert, who had watched so tenderly over me the whole time had many people to see, & such numbers of letters to write. — Dear Mama, came to see me early in the morning, & dearest Albert sat with me in the evening. We felt so grateful to God for again so mercifully protecting me this time…’ Birth of Princess Mary, Princess Royal ‘…Heard from Georgie that May had given birth to a little girl, both doing well. It is strange that this child should be born on dear Alice’s birthday, whilst the last was on the anniversary of her death. —‘ 📸:RCT see citations in comments #princessalice #princessaliceoftheunitedkingdom #grandduchessalice #grandduchessalicemaudmary #aliceofhesse #alicemaudmary #princessmaryprincessroyal #maryprincessroyal #countessofharewood #queenvictoria #queenvictoriaofengland #victoriaregia #princessvictoria #victoriaoftheunitedkingdom #kinggeorgev #georgev #kingedwardvii #kingedwardviii #edwardvii #edwardviii #maryofteck #princessmaryofteck #queenmary #queenmaryofteck #victoriaadelaidemarylouisa #victoriaprincessroyal #princesshelena #princesshelenaoftheunitedkingdom #princealbert #princeconsort

#OnThisDay 25 April 1897 Princess Mary, later Princess Royal & Countess of Harewood, was born Princess Mary (full name Victoria Alexandra Alice Mary) was born at York Cottage on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, England. Her parents were the future George V & Mary of Teck. Mary was named after her paternal great-grandmother (who would have preferred that she be christened 'Diamond' rather than Victoria, because she was born during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee year),) her paternal grandmother, the Princess of Wales, & her maternal grandmother, Princess Mary Adelaide. Since she was born on the same day as her deceased grandaunt Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse & by Rhine, the name Alice was added in. She was always known by the last of her Christian names, Mary. As a great-grandchild of the British monarch (Queen Victoria), she was styled Her Highness Princess Mary of York. In 1898, the Queen passed letters patent granting the children of the Duke & Duchess of York the style, Royal Highness. Mary was then styled Her Royal Highness Princess Mary of York. She was fifth in the line of succession at the time of her birth. In the First World War, she performed charity work in support of servicemen & their families. She married Henry Lascelles, Viscount Lascelles (later the 6th Earl of Harewood), in 1922. Mary was given the title of Princess Royal in 1932. During the Second World War, she was Controller Commandant of the Auxiliary Territorial Service. The Princess Royal and the Earl of Harewood had two sons, George Lascelles, 7th Earl of Harewood, & The Honourable Gerald Lascelles. __________ #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #d25apr #History #PrincessMary #MaryPrincessRoyal #PrincessRoyal #CountessofHarewood #HouseofWindsor #BritishMonarchy #otd #RoyalHistory #HistoryFacts #British #Britishhistory #historyofbritain #royalfamily #ukroyals #Vintagephotographs #Vintagephotos #Britishroyalty #britishroyalfamily #royals #BritishRoyals #Countess #Harewood #Sandringham #royalphotos

💌 #onthisday - Mary, Princess Royal and Henry Lascelles married in 1922, at Westminster Abbey. Mary met Henry Lascelles, heir to the earldom of Harewood when she attended the theatre. Henry fell in love with Mary and began courting her, something that pleased her parents. He asked her to marry him twice but was rejected. Mary didn't like Henry, she didn't find him attractive and he wasn't nice either. Finally, Mary ended up accepting his third marriage proposal due to the pressure that her parents put on her. Surprisingly, the marriage was happy. They both had many things in common and developed a great complicity. They had 2 sons. In 1929, they became Earls of Harewood. Henry died in 1947 and Mary in 1965.

The photographs offer a fascinating glimpse into the first marital home of Princess Mary and Prince George, Duke of York. Busts of King George V and Queen Mary which are part of the Royal Collection Trust. My best friend is going through a rough patch right now so I wanted to post something I know she would love and it is also why the last bust is of Queen Anne who is her favourite Monarch.👸 This song sums M up perfectly, and I genuinely cannot believe that God brought her into my life because she has helped me grow while also protecting me and she is also my biggest cheerleader and supporter. I have recently become fascinated with busts and sculptures so I am going to share some of my favourites. I love how intricate the detail on these pieces are and it is mind blowing 🤯 how lifelike they are! Which royal would you like to see sculptures of next? A beautiful old reply from Patricia Lascelles, Countess of Harewood (1926-2018). Australian-Born English violinist, model and distant member of the British Royal Family. Her late husband George Lascelles, 7th Earl of Harewood, was a first cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II and the son of Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood. This postcard is very moving and reflective.

I have so many different sources and theories which I am excited to share with you and I hope that you will like my research. To be honest I don’t really have a time frame and I will be sharing other topics as well yet must of my spare time is dedicated to researching this project. ⚜️𝓜𝓪𝓻𝔂, 𝓟𝓻𝓲𝓷𝓬𝓮𝓼𝓼 𝓡𝓸𝔂𝓪𝓵 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓦𝓲𝓵𝓵𝓲𝓪𝓶, 𝓕𝓾𝓽𝓾𝓻𝓮 𝓟𝓻𝓲𝓷𝓬𝓮 𝓸𝓯 𝓞𝓻𝓪𝓷𝓰𝓮 ⚜️ This painting shows Mary, Princess Royal (1631-1660) and the future William II, Prince of Orange (1626-1650). Mary was the daughter of Charles I of England and Henrietta Maria of France. William was the son of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange and Amalia of Solms-Braunfels. Marriage proposals had been made since January 1640, when Mary was still 8 years old. The king, Mary's father, initially refused, but the marriage eventually took place on May 1641, when Mary was 9 years old and William 14. Mary was able to remain in England until she was 12 years old and only went to Netherlands in 1643. It was shortly before leaving England that Mary received the title of Princess Royal, being the first Princess to be styled like that in England. The title was compared to "Madame Royale", used in France by the King's eldest daughter. William became Prince of Orange upon his father's death in 1647. In the same year, Mary had suffered a miscarriage and was only able to become pregnant again in early 1650. William II died at the end of 1650, at the age of 24, while Mary was still pregnant. She gave birth 8 days later to William, (future William III of England), who received the same name as his late father. Mary acted as regent for her son from 1651 until her own death in 1660 at the age of 29. 🎨 Painting by: Anthony Van Dick, 1641. . . . #maryprincessroyal #princeoforange #princessoforange #williamii #england #charlesi #henriettamariaoffrance #williamiiiofengland #anthonyvandick

Today I wanted to share a newspaper article about Princess Mary the Princess Royal. While the newspaper article is incredibly old fashioned and very stereotypical I still think it is interesting to see the kind of presents she received for Christmas. 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄 Princess Mary’s Toys. ‘Princess Mary of Wales had given her this Christmas a wonderful doll which is almost as big as her baby brother. But it is no secret, says a ladies’ paper, that the Princess always prefers her brothers’ toys to her own, and that she is especially keen on those which are concerned with outdoor games. The Princess of Wales is always careful to give her daughter sich presents which are thoroughly suitable for a little girl, as she is most anxious that little Mary should be above all feminine…’ Source: North Devon Gazette (1906) ‘Princess Mary’s Toys’, 16 January, p. 3. In 1905, the Prince and Princess of Wales celebrated Christmas away from their children during a trip to India but Princess Mary still kept in contact with her children via letters this is a letter she wrote to her son Prince Albert (George VI): ‘We are glad to hear that you have quite got over yr tiresome colds…We thought so much of you all on Xmas Eve & Xmas day which we spent at Gwalior where we had a delightful visit of 6 days & thoroughly enjoyed ourselves… On Xmas day I gave an Xmas Tree to the Gwalior children who were delighted with the presents I gave them, especially the crackers which I pulled with them, They had never seen a Tree before so you can imagine their delight…’ Note: unfortunately someone I love very very much has not got long to live and I am so distraught so I am going to schedule posts in advance while I am calm but I won’t be very active for a little while. An Edwardian Christmas 🎄 In my family the display of the Christmas tree and the exchange of gifts always took place on Christmas Eve. After tea we all piled into my fathers omnibus, ordinarily used for transporting the servants, and rode up to the Big House, where my grandparents would be waiting in the Saloon with some of the older members of the household, who usually spent Christmas with them… It would not be long before the loud banging of a gong heralded the approach of Santa Claus himself. An instant later there would appear in our midst the real thing… After bowing to the King and Queen, who would greet him jovially, Santa Claus led the company out of the Saloon towards the Ballroom. The double doors flew open before his advance, revealing in the centre of the room a fir-tree from the woods, tall enough to touch the ceiling, festooned with tinsel, tinted glass balls, patches of cotton-wool in imitation of snow, and ablaze with candles. But, as with everything else at Sandringham, even the business of Christmas proceeded along prescribed lines. Around the Ballroom were tables heaped with presents, with an ample section marked off for each person, the first for the King and the Queen, the next for my mother and father, and the rest more or less according to precedence. The children's tables were in a far corner, segregated from the rest. This precaution was no doubt intended to safeguard a precious Fabergé jade masterpiece or a bejewelled clock on my grandmother's table from becoming the casualty of a wild shot from a toy gun or a misdirected football issuing from our direction. If I could go back in time I would love to see a Sandringham Christmas but I think I may have to be satisfied with King Edward VIII’s memories. 🎄🎄 ‘Christmas at Sandringham was Dickens in a Cartier setting. It was more of a family gathering, that's my grandparents always came back for that. Since serious purpose was usually injected even into a pleasures, Mr. Hansell, working to install in us a knowledge of the ancient meaning of this Christmas fête, would attempt to explain to us for religious meaning of the Nativity. He also read to us Dickens well-known Christmas story; and Mama, with the lady-in-waiting at the piano, taught us for Christmas carols. And to remind us to think of others, my parents always took us on Christmas Eve to the coach-house at the stables to watch the distribution of me to the employees on the estate. When, from these days of rationing and controls, I look back upon this simple scene, I appreciate, as I did not then, the bounty thus displayed. Inside the coach-house, on long tables covered with white tablecloths were laid scores of bloody joints of beef, one for each family, and each tagged with the name of the recipient. Outside of the stable yard, waiting their town, were the game keepers, gardeners, foresters, and stable hands, or their wives - in all some three hundred people. My grandparents with their family starts just inside near the door of the coach-house ; and as the employees walked out with their meat, the men touching their caps and the women making a quick bob of a curtsy, the King wished each a Happy Christmas.‘ Source in comments will continue tomorrow #kingedwardviii #edwardviii #princeedward #edwardprinceofwales #princeofwales #dukeofwindsor #edwardvii #kingedwardvii #kinggeorgevi #georgevi #princealbert #dukeofyork #princessmary #princessmaryprincessroyal #maryprincessroyal #princessroyal #countessofharewood #queenalexandra #queenalexandrafashiontimeline #alexandraofdenmark #princessalexandra #queenmary #queenmaryofteck #georgev #kinggeorgev #georgedukeofkent #princegeorge #princehenry #henrydukeofgloucester #dukeofkent

I have the third and final instalment of Mrs Wigram’s Christmas with King George V and Queen Mary: ‘Princess Mary had some nice things - a pair of blonde tortoise shell and diamond hairpins, an ermine muff and stole, and a pretty little hair wreath - a dreadful brilliant blue inkstand from Queen Alexandra - one or two nice little ornaments including a little George III work box with the most dainty fittings. The boys all got little articles of jewellery - a little pearl and diamond pin for Prince Henry - besides which they always give them silver so that when they marry they will be suitably equipped. It seems so funny to see Princes Henry and George staggering off with silver toast-racks salvers, tea-strainers, etc! - They were a very happy little party and I am so glad I did not miss it’ Source Mrs Wigram Letters ; Quoted Matson, J. Yesterday I shared part one of Mrs Wigrams Sandringham Christmas so here is part two. For some reason she disliked Queen Alexandra but I don’t know why. ‘Dr Grey and Reggie both received cigarette cases - Mr Watts framed photo of themselves. Mlle. Dussan a gold brooch with enamel decoration and seal coney muff- Then having bestowed all their generous gifts they opened their own which they were so excited over. The Queen gave him a fine set of sporting books Illustrated and a set of black pearl studs, and he got - from Princess Victoria, I think a sort of china goblet and from Queen Alexandra 2 horrid little boxes with her and King Edward’s picture on the lids. The Queen had some delightful things. I was so amused with her. Like every good wife she said, ‘I saw this little box which pleased me and I asked the King to give it to me as his Christmas present.’ All her things were obejets d’art; little lacquer boxes, jade ornaments and an old Stuart snuff-box. She had carefully chosen her mother-in-law’s present to herself - a nice little Chinese ornament…’ The source is so long it will be continued tomorrow 🎄🎄🎄🎄 Source: Mrs Wigram Letters ; Quoted Matson, J. A Description of Mrs Wigram's Christmas with King George V and Queen Mary in 1917: I am so glad I managed to struggle down to tea on Christmas Eve to York cottage for it was quite an experience. We had a select Little T in the drawing room - Their Majesties, lady Katy, Reggie Seymour and ourselves; the Queen in a very diaphanous Green dress with a pretty necklace. I wore my black and blue dress. Toast, biscuits, potato scones, jam and sponge cake was the fair provided. After tea the Queen rang the bell and when the Page came in she said, ‘tell the children we are ready, please,’ whereupon there was an avalanche from all directions. The whole party was marshalled, consisting of P. Mary, Princess Albert, Henry and George - Dr Gray, Mlle Dussau and Mr Watts (the boys’ tutor), and we all proceeded into the billiard room, everybody's presents were collected in little heaps. Lady Katy was the first to be given has a very nice pair of sauce boats and a quaint Jade paper cutter. Then to my amazement the Queen called me and they gave me a most charming brooch - too kind of them - it is about 1” square. The groundwork blue-grey enamel surrounded with white enamel and little pearls and then in the middle a diamond ‘GM’ surmounted by a diamond crown; a delightful thing to have and besides that they gave Clive yet another present; a charming coloured reproduction of their picture and that of the Prince of Wales - by Cuye - very nice.’ Part two will be posted tomorrow Source Mrs Wigram Letters ; Quoted Matson, J. #maryprincessroyal Mary principessa reale, l’unica figlia di Giorgio V e zia della regina Elisabetta II. #storiainglese #royals #oldmoney #tiaras #britishroyaljewellery #royaloldmodel #oldfashion #1920s #1930sfashion #1930s #maryprincessroyal #marypricess #mariaprincipessa #princessroyal #princessroyalty #britishroyalfamily #harewood #harewoodhouse #royalfamily #britishroyalty #britishroyaltystyle #britishhistory #britishroyalhistory #storiareale #royalhistory #curiosity

Queen Alexandra is officially 179! 🩷 Wishing her a very happy heavenly birthday, I love getting to tell her story and I hope that she would like what I post.🎂 Following the death of her eldest son, Queen Alexandra found it difficult to be away from her surviving children, especially her beloved son Prince George however she took comfort in the fact that ‘there is a bond of love between us, that of a mother and child which nothing can ever diminish, or render less binging - and nobody can or shall ever, come between me and my darling Georgie boy.’ When she learnt that Prince George had proposed to Princess Mary of Teck she wrote to him on the sixth of May 1893“With what mixed feeling I read your telegram! Well all I can say is that I pray God to give you both a long and happy life together, and that you will be a mutual happiness to each other, a comfort to us, and a blessing to the nation.’ Source: Nicholson , H. Today I did something rather exciting! As I have been searching the newspaper archives I read that Queen Alexandra visited Oakham Castle in Rutland on the 13th of January 1881. Oakham Castle is home to hundreds of horseshoe’s which have been presented by persons of interest and many were members of the Royal Family. Although Alexandra did not present the horseshoe on the day as it was still being created she did select where on the wall it should go. When her husband visited in April 1885 he had his placed next to hers which I thought was sweet 🥹 📸 1) RCT 2) Princess Alexandra of Wales 3)Prince Albert Edward of Wales 4) King George VI 5)Princess Margaret 6&7) Prince Albert, Duke of York 8) Princess Mary Princess Royal 9) Princess Mary Adelaide Duchess of Teck #queenalexandra #alexandraofdenmark #kingedwardvii #edwardvii #kinggeorgevi #georgevi #princealbert #dukeofyork #princessmary #princessmaryprincessroyal #maryprincessroyal #countessofharewood #queenalexandraoftheunitedkingdom #princessofwales #princealbertedward #albertedward #princeofwales #edwardtheseventh #kinggeorgev #georgev #georgeofwales #alexandraofwales #princessmargaret #princessmargaretrose #countessofsnowdon #princessvictoria #victoriaoftheunitedkingdom #georgedukeofkent #princegeorge #edwardviii

In "Princess Mary: The First Modern Princess" author Elisabeth Basford gives a glimpse into the relationship of King George V and his only daughter Princess Mary "George was far more lenient with Mary and, as his only daughter, she was his favourite child. Unlike his treatment of his sons, he was prepared to overlook a lack of punctuality: The only person who was allowed to be late for anything, even breakfast, was apparently my mother, [Princess Mary] … whose instincts must have been similar to those of her two grandmothers, Queen Alexandra and the Duchess of Teck, each of whom was capable of being up to a couple of hours late for meals. Mary was less inhibited than her brothers but her father’s ‘frequent jokes at her expense often made her cheeks crimson". "As Mary entered her teenage years, her father, although proud of his only daughter, struggled to engage with her. This is certainly no different to most fathers of adolescent girls. Once at York Cottage on the Sandringham estate he found himself on his own with Mary for a few days and seemed unsure what he should do. Queen Mary advised George to allow Mary into his study and keep him company while he worked on his red boxes. In a letter to his wife, George proudly explained, ‘I have invited her to come and sit in my room while I write, she … seems pleased at the idea, although she did not talk much, at least to me, but that will come I hope.’ Eventually the two became closer and by 1914 they were seen riding together regularly". Queen Alexandra month day twenty-three: The Prince of Wales catches a criminal One evening a policeman stumbled across a door half-open to a famous jewellery store and went inside to take a closer look, to his horror he discovered three burglars attempting to crack open the safe, a fight ensued and two managed to escape; the policeman shouted for help and the Prince of Wales who happened to be passing the shop immediately began to fight with the two escapees and managed to capture one of the men. Day twenty one of Queen Alexandra month: I know I am fond of Queen Alexandra but stories like these explain why I love her so much. I also think that Alexandra influenced her granddaughter Mary. Who do you believe she influenced. Visiting a sick factory girl ‘One day in 1908, in the middle of the London Season, her white motor car, en route for some function or other, was seen to drive up to the door of St. Luke’s House, Pembridge Square, Bayswater, a charitable institution for the reception of cases of mortal illness in their latest stages. It seems that, a day or two previous, Martha Massy, one of the patients - a consumptive factory girl - had surreptitiously written a letter to the Queen saying how much she wished to see her before she died. The letter, which was couched in the simplest phraseology, explained that the writer, though she often tried, had never been able to see the Queen of whom she had always read in the papers. The Queen was so touched by the evident sincerity of the poor girl that she at once resolved to gratify her wish. The visit was one of surprise. The servant-girl who, on answering the bell, at once recognised the Queen, could scarcely announce her to the matron, while the astonishment of the latter may be imagined when the Queen of England appeared in her little office and explained the object of her visit ! As for Martha Massy, at sight of the Queen standing by her bedside surprise and pleasure for the moment quite overcame her . Day twenty of Queen Alexandra month; on this day in history Queen Alexandra died following a heart attack, at the time of her death she had become almost completely blind and deaf as well as having struggled with what would most likely have been diagnosed as dementia nowadays. 🪽🩷🪽🩷🪽🩷🪽🩷🪽🩷🪽🩷🪽 Memories of Queen Alexandra: In her memoirs Princess Marie Louise recalled that on one occasion ‘Again, we were all waiting for her ; this time it was for a Court at Buckingham Palace. When she did enter the drawing-room, the King looked at her very sternly and asked why she was wearing the Star if the Garter on the right side instead of on the left, which was the correct place for it to be worn. She merely smiled and answered that to wear it on the left side interfered with the arrangement of her jewels. According to her idea, it did not matter which side she pinned the Star ! The King was adamant, and requested her to go back to her dressing-room, and no matter whether it spoilt the arrangment of her jewels, the Star of the Most Noble Order of the Garter must be worm correctly , and not merely as another and very beautiful jewel amongst the ones she was already wearing, She obeyed, absolutely unruffled, and after a further somewhat protracted wait we proceeded into the Throne Room…’ Please note Queen Alexandra was wearing jewels taken from other countries on this occasion. I have removed this part of the extract as it left a bitter aftertaste in the mouth. Both Queen Alexandra and her husband King Edward VII were besotted by their grandchildren and were delighted to care for them whenever they could. During the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall’s eight-month world tour their grandchildren, Edward, Albert, Mary and Henry were placed in their care and it appears that they had a wonderful time. ‘If the superimposition of four noisy children upon the Royal Household during my parents’ absence was ever a nuisance my grandparents never let us know it. On the contrary, they encouraged our innate boisterousness to such an extent that a quiet routine of York Cottage suffered a brief but harmless setback. For a little less than a year our lessons had been in the charge of an Alsatian lady, Mlle Helen Bricka, who had taught my mother as a girl. By now plump and elderly, Mlle Bricka had undoubtedly been an ideal governess for a girl of finishing school age, but she was to find that the teaching of small and restless boys presented problems outside her previous experience. Nor were her conscientious efforts furthered by the fact that I had passed temporarily under the sunny hospital basis of a grandfather who remembered how dull his own lessons had been, and of a grandmother who believed that lessons were less important to children than their happiness. Day fifteen of Queen Alexandra month: How is everyone today? I am feeling rather mature as I have been doing my Christmas shopping before the 23rd of December! King Edward VII became fascinated with ‘horseless carriages’ while he was still Prince of Wales however he did not want his wife to travel in one as they were still unpredictable and therefore dangerous and he was afraid that she might be injured or worse. Ignoring her husband’s pleas, Alexandra decided to send her lady-in-waiting to ask other people who owned cars if they could borrow their car for a little while; as a result of this, Edward was forced to purchase Alexandra a car and hire her a chauffeur that he could trust to keep her safe. In 1901, Queen Alexandra decided that she would like to learn how to drive and asked her lady-in-waiting Charlotte Knollys to ask the famous Paris Singer to teach them both to drive. I do not know how these lessons went or what kind of driver Alexandra was but on the 28th of June 1901, Queen Alexandra wrote to her son Prince George describing her delight at the open road! ‘…We had a charming week or ten days at Sandringham which was in great beauty at the moment… We had a splendid Motor Car down there & I did enjoy being driven about in the cool of the evening at 50. Miles!! an hour! when nothing in the way - of course only! - & I must say I had the greatest confidence in our driver - I poke him violently in the back at every corner to go gently & whenever a dog child or anything comes in our way!…’ Source RA GV/PRIV/AA32/30 quoted in Clark, P. Day fourteen of Queen Alexandra month: she truly was the greatest queen ever! ‘With all her queenly dignity my grandmother has a wonderful way with people. The warmth and understanding of her approach to human problems left no doubt as to the sincerity of her solicitude. During the First World War, while visiting wounded soldiers in an orthopædic hospital, she noted the depressed expression on one patient’s face. On her inquiring the reason, the Medical Officer informed her that the man’s knee would be permanently stiffened as the result of a gunshot wound. My grandmother went straight to his bed to comfort him, “I have one, and look what I can do.” Whereupon she swung her bad leg easily over the seat of an adjacent chair. Queen Alexandra’s interest and care for the workers and villagers at Sandringham were bountiful. Her generosity was a source of embarrassment to her financial advisers. Whenever she received a letter soliciting money, a cheque would be sent by the next post, regardless of the authenticity of the mendicant and without having the case investigated. She also loved animals, especially horses and dogs. A lame horse or one pulling too heavy a load would cause her to stop in the street or on the road to upbraid the driver.’ Windsor, E. Day thirteen of Queen Alexandra month: I am so so sorry for being so quiet for the last few days. I cut the back of my head and I just didn’t feel up to posting but I shall share the missing posts in January. King Edward VIII on his grandmother Queen Alexandra’s lateness; My grandmother, Queen Alexandra was as usual at the Big House, I used to go and see her every day, walking over in the evening to chat or play patience or do jigsaw puzzles with her. Although she was quite an old lady by then, she still remained much of the beauty of the lovely young woman who had come from Denmark almost fifty years before to marry my grandfather. With her delicately chiselled features, her high coiffure, and the grace of her manner, she was still greatly admired. Her charm was irresistible and overcame such disabilities as a stiff leg, acute deafness, and rebellious unpunctuality in a family determined to be run by clockwork. She was late for everything - meals, church, trains, and worst of all, big ceremonies. The story is told that she was even late for her Coronation and that my grandfather, exasperated, burst into her room, watch in hand, remonstrating “My dear Alix, if you don’t come immediately you won’t be crowned Queen.’ Windsor, E. Princess Ileana of Romania 🇷🇴 (1909 - 1991) the youngest daughter of King Ferdinand I of Romania and his consort, Queen Marie of Romania, and a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria. "Ileana from her earliest infancy had an earnestness  about her which her siblings did not possess. Her large dark  blue eyes looked at you with deep inquiry and the child  seemed to understand your every emotion with almost  uncanny lucidity. Ileana  was  naturally  well-behaved ; Ileana,  as  is  so  seldom  the  case, was  born  with  the  law  within  her,  it  was  never  necessary  to  teach  Ileana the  difference  between  right  and  wrong ; Ileana  knew.  But  this did  not make  of  her  a prig,  she  was  a happy  child,  full  of  life  and  high spirits".

🩷🩷🩷Royal Confession🩷🩷🩷 I hate that Queen Mary is often labelled as a kleptomaniac just because she had an obsession with collecting. Context: During Mary’s lifetime it was royal protocol to offer a member of the royal family any item that they had admired. A kleptomaniac is a person who has the impulse to steal something without caring about its monetary value whereas Queen Mary tended to acquire items that cost more than the average person would have earned in a lifetime. When Queen Mary’s husband’s aunt Maria Feodorovna was forced to flee from Russia she took with her a large box containing most of her jewellery and trinkets that she refused to sell as she believed her daughters the Grand Duchesses Xenia and Olga Alexandrovna would need the money following her death. As Maria lay dying Queen Mary began to pressurise Xenia into giving the box to the British Royal Family for ‘safe keeping’ Sadly Xenia believed she had no other choice but to do as the Queen said as she was dependent on the King for financial support. Shortly after her mother’s death Xenia once again succumbed to Mary’s demands and agreed to let the British Royal Family sell the jewels on her behalf in reality, most of the jewels were brought by Queen Mary herself but Olga and Xenia were not told who the mystery buyer was. While I believe that Mary often abused her royal status to get what she wanted she never actually resorted to stealing which is why I think it is unfair to label her as a kleptomaniac. 📸: public domain/ RCT #queenmary #maryofteck #princessmary #queenmaryofteck #princessmaryofteck #kinggeorge #georgev #kinggeorgev #georgethefifth #princegeorge #princegeorgeofwales #georgeofwales #dukeofyork #duchessofyork #kingedwardviii #edwardviii #princeofwales #princessofwales #queenalexandra #alexandraofdenmark #dukeofwindsor #princeedward #princealbert #dukeofkent #georgevi #princessmaryprincessroyal #maryprincessroyal #princessroyal #countessofharewood #princehenryofwales

🩷🩷🩷Royal Confession🩷🩷🩷 I absolutely adore looking through Princess Victoria’s scrapbooks. The photos of Queen Maud and her husbands are absolutely brilliant 🤩 there is something special about personal photos like these. I think that Princess Victoria is highly underrated 😥 she has largely been overlooked but when she was alive she was an amazing working royal who managed to put the public at ease and also enjoyed flirting in her spare time! 😘😘 I really wish someone would write a biography about her life but I appreciate it is very difficult. 🩷🩷🩷Royal Confession 🩷🩷🩷 I believe that Princess Mary loved her husband despite the claims that their marriage was arranged by her parents. Princess Mary was over the moon when Henry proposed but before putting Henry out of his misery Mary ran into her mother’s room to tell her the exciting news. Her mother reminded her that she still needed to get her father’s blessing which they could do later however, Mary was too excited to wait and dragged her mother through the house in order to get her father’s blessing immediately. I also want to point out that King George V did not want his only daughter to get married and leave home so why would he be forcing her into a loveless marriage? Do you agree or disagree? 📸: RCT #princessmary #princessmaryprincessroyal #maryprincessroyal #countessofharewood #princessmaryofteck #maryofteck #queenmary #maryofteck #kinggeorgev #georgev #dukeofyork #duchessofyork #earlofharewood #princeofwales #princessofwales #princegeorge #princegeorgeofwales #queenalexandra #alexandraofdenmark #princessalexandra #princessalexandraofdenmark #edwardviii #kingedwardviii #dukeofkent #princegeorgedukeofkent #princehenryofwales #princehenry #princealbert #kinggeorgevi #georgevi #princejohn

While Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother loved her father-in-law, King George V dearly she was under no illusions when it came to the negative impact he had on his children’s self-esteem. Following the birth of their second daughter, Elizabeth wrote a letter to her husband (future George VI) advising him on how to raise their children should she die unexpectedly. ‘Always try & talk very quietly to children. Never shout or frighten them or otherwise you lose their delightful trust in you. Remember how your father, by shouting at you, & making you feel uncomfortable lost all your real affection. None of his sons are his friends, because he is not understanding & helpful to them.’ Please not I don’t think that George V was an awful father I just think he struggled to understand the needs of his children and how to socialise with them. 📸: RCT #kinggeorge #georgev #kinggeorgevi #kinggeorgev #georgevi #georgethefifth #georgethesixth #queenelizabeth #queenelizabethii #queenelizabeth2 #elizabeththesecond #queenmother #thequeenmother #elizabethboweslyon #boweslyon #queenmary #maryofteck #queenmaryofteck #duchessofyork #dukeofyork #princessofwales #princeofwales #princegeorge #princegeorgeofwales #queenalexandra #queenalexandrafashiontimeline #princessmaryprincessroyal #princessmary #maryprincessroyal #countessofharewood

Which royal wedding was the first to be covered by Vogue? Princess Mary, the only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, married Henry Lascelles, 6th Earl of Harewood, at Westminster Abbey in February 1922. You might think it normal to have royal weddings at Westminster Abbey, but in fact Mary (aunt of Elizabeth II) becoming the first child of the monarch to marry at the Abbey since 1290! Mary was the first royal princess to be married in decades and a big royal wedding was an opportunity to bring people together following WWI. It was the first royal wedding to be covered by Vogue who described the bride as “a fairy Princess with Youth, Beauty and Happiness as her attendants”! Bridesmaids included Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the future wife of King George VI and mother of Elizabeth II. Mary opted for a floral bridal wreath rather than a crown, in keeping with the style of the 1920s.  Pictures 1: The happy couple (despite the expressions!) with the bride’s parents George V and Queen Mary 2: Cover of Vogue 3: Bridesmaid Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (later Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mother) #royalhistory #royalwedding #queenmother #maryprincessroyal

Princess Mary at the coronation of her parents, 22 June 1911. On June 22, 1911, the coronation ceremony of King George V and Queen Mary took place in Westminster Abbey. George had succeeded his father King Edward VII, who had died the previous year. It was also an occasion attended by 14-year-old Princess Mary and her siblings. The young girl had often been in the public eye in the past, for example when she visited the zoo, took a letter to the post office with her governess or said goodbye to her parents at the port when they were leaving on a foreign trip. However, the coronation eclipsed all of the princess's other public appearances. The fashionable girl was now the focus of the press. For example, "The Bystander" reported: "One thing that charmed me immensely was … Princess Mary. Duly impressed with the solemnity of the occasion she played her part with a gravity that was positively delicious. To look at her one might have thought that she assisted regularly at Coronations about once a week. She and the Prince of Wales and the rest of that youthful party got a tremendous ovation." In her book "Princess Mary: The First Modern Princess", Elisabeth Basford describes Mary's dress and jewelry on this special day as follows: "[...] Mary dressed in magnificent purple velvet robes, trimmed with ermine over a white dress, white satin shoes and stockings. She wore three rows of pearls and had a small coronet on top of her cascading blonde curls. The coronet seemed to cause her a good deal of worry but the Duchess of Teck, the wife of Prince Adolphus, who sat behind her, happily helped to adjust it before the ceremony. Mary had a long train, which was carried by Lady Dorothy Dawkins, a lady-in-waiting to Queen Mary."
