A poignant comment on this picture, often credited as a banjo player, being solely a posed photo and one within racist pretence. Tony Thomas, MFA, says: "It is unfortunate [to be] taken in by the faked picture of a supposed Black Banjoist produced in 1902 by one Victor Schreck of Savannah Georgia, a minor Democrat segregationist politician, and I believe banker, who also marketed “nostalgic” pictures of Black people illustrating the idea that African Americans especially the generation of liberated ex-slaves were ruined by freedom and reconstruction like the several picture Schreck took of the unfortunate model of this picture. I presented on this kind of misrepresentation of African American banjoists as a whole, but in particular at the end of the 19th and early 20th Century at the 2018 Banjo Gathering using this picture and others of that series as an example, and extended on how the popularity of this fake reflected the continued misrepresentation of African American Banjoist particularly in the period it was taken. I contrasted the stereotype represented by this racist fake picture with the real images and real careers of Hosea Eason, Charles Stinson, and Vance Lowry, three real African American banjoists who were internationally known. The biggest lie was ever sold as a child of the midwestern private school system was the romantic relationship between a slave named Sally Hemming's and former President Thomas Jefferson. It is my understanding that this painting was meant to show the true person behind the stories. Sally was between 8 to 12 years old when Jefferson started molesting her. She bore children of her master while still a child herself (age 12-13) but no one stopped this because of his power and influence. Nate Powell, who worked on the March trilogy about John Lewis, has adapted the Lies My Teacher Told Me to graphic novel adaptation, and let me tell you, this should be required reading of everyone, not just high school and college students. I like to think of myself as well informed, especially about American history, but I found things in this book that I remember being taught that I still believed, despite the amount of history I have consumed. Things that didn’t make sense at the time, and I never question. The book is told in sections. What we got wrong about Christpher Columbus, the First Thanksgiving, the Civil War, the Vietnam War, and more. It ends with why history is taught this way, and what it means for the future. The author explains that people who have lived through history know it better than those who weren’t even born yet. As history recedes in the background, things are left out, and there is no one to ask why, or question it. A good example of history not making sense, if you read it as it is taught, is when we were taught that the indigenous people of this country did no farming. If that were the case, then how did they teach the European settlers how to plant the Three Sisters (squash, corn and beans), so that they could survive to have the first Thanksgiving? There is so much in this book that it is hard to highlight every single thing that is pointed out. But one thing that the author points out is that things happen in history books that are not explained. Wars just start. People just do things. And these things are not explained. And sadly things that have happened in my lifetime, such as the Vietnam war are just glossed over, including Mai Li. Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review. Black History Moment (Dawes Roll) A Massachusetts congressman by the name of Henry Dawes drafted federal legislation enacted in 1887 which ordered the 'registering' of so-called Indians so that they could receive an allotment of 'THEIR OWN LAND'. In order to do this, so-called Indians had to change their names to more 'English' sounding names. This allowed white officials to slip their family members and friends onto the 'Dawes Rolls' and illegally reap the benefits (owning millions of acres of land). In state alone, 138 million acres of land that indigenous people in the US owned at the time the Dawes Roll (1887) was enacted was reduced to less than 50 million acres by 1934, when the ACt was repealed. Now mind you many of the indigenous people were of African descent. Ultimately, this travesty netted white people (masquerading as so-called Indians) over 2 BILLION acres of free land. This land has an estimated value of $4,000 per acre or $9.2 TRILLION Dollars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Such a good book that everyone needs to read. And I need to preface it that this is not a book that is specifically attacking teachers. It does very little of that actually. It really is talking about the problems with textbooks and the way that history is being written. Beyond that it talks about the complications that teachers have to be able to teach their students proper information when the institution they are teaching them gives them more than a handful of reasons to teach it other ways. With some of the reasons threatening their own job. Teachers are trying their best to teach even when everything is stacked against them. History is way more complex and in depth then we are made to believe and our lack of knowledge in this area is starting to show. History is beginning to repeat itself because we are not taking the proper steps to do anything different. Every year I recommend this book & will continue to do so until this abomination of a 'holiday' is abolished & Columbus is truly represented as the lying, thieving, slaver & murder he really was. Until recently history was all about great men & great events but in this country's zeal to present iconic figures like Washington, Jefferson etc. as persons to emulate historians have often gone too far portraying them as infallible gods, & great events such as Columbus' "discovery" of America were always told in the most heroic fashion. This book completely destroys that notion & yanks the veils of mythology many like to drape over less than honorable historical figures & presents an honest look at what Columbus really was, a thieving, murderous, kidnapping slave trader & land stealer. This book details long neglected history & overturns the various heroic, myth ridden portrayals of Columbus & shows the true vile opportunistic, self-serving nature & ulterior motives this figure held. Well written, researched & argued this book does a thorough job of presenting Columbus' less than heroic motives accurately with the cold hard facts to back it up effectively dismantling the facade of this fraudulent legacy. A must read for all who want to know the true history of Columbus, not the mickey mouse history we teach to our children. Today cities such as LA, Seattle, Denver, Phoenix, SantaFe, Portland & others across the country have done away with Columbus & now celebrate Indigenous People's Day. But it is still not nearly enough! We shouldn't put people like Columbus on a pedestal, we need to rip people like this off the pedestal! In my house we celebrate Indigenous People today & every day. I hated history as a grade school student. It felt like mindless memorization of facts that didn't apply to me. But the last few years I've picked up plenty of history books, and enjoyed them thoroughly. To name a few - Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind Stamped From The Beginning A People's History of the United States The 1619 Project Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee Reading Lies My Teacher Told Me helped explain that disconnect from teenage Heather, who hardly retained a lick of high school history and had "no opinions" on the state of society or politics, to adult Heather who is much more vocal and reads history books for the enjoyment of it.
