Annie Hooper was born in Buxton, NC, on Cape Hatteras and lived on the Outer Banks of NC for most of her life. She was raised in a religious household and attended a Methodist church. After marrying her husband John and moving to Stumpy Point, NC, Hooper taught herself to play hymns and served as the church organist. Throughout her life, she wrote hundreds of poems and songs, but not until much later that she began to make sculptures. After experiencing periods of deep depression, first when her son Edgar and husband John were away during WWII and again when Edgar was temporarily stricken with lung problems, Hooper sought mental treatment. When she returned from treatment, Hooper was unable to return to the life she had enjoyed. To occupy herself, she began to make art as a source of healing and a means of articulating her innermost thoughts, beliefs, and emotions. She constructed a vast array of sculptures from driftwood, putty, shells, and cement, nearly 5,000 in total. She later called them “symbols” and displayed them among roughly 300 tableaus representing scenes from the Bible in her home. She continually recreated Biblical characters that reflected some aspect of her own inner, emotional life. Hooper did not sell her work but preferred to lead visitors on tours, using the figures to act out religious stories. When her husband was crippled by a stroke in 1978, Hooper created signs to take the place of her personal narration and help tell the stories for visitors who walked around her home freely. New kinetic sculptures showing at Alchemy, a group exhibition presented by @throwncontemporary at @Omved Gardens in Highgate during @londoncraftweek . 📍OmVed, 1 Townsend Yard, London, N6 5FJ 📆 11-26th May Opening Hours Wed - Sat 11-5pm Sun 12-5pm So pleased this piece is the poster girl for the exhibition. The stained ceramic forms are my interpretation of soil microbes. They gently balance and orbit each other as if by magic. The piece is a metaphor for the vital roles microbes play in healthy soil. Essential for breaking down decaying matter to produce nutritious food for humans and non-humans alike, enabling the soil to absorb flood water from extreme weather events, and helping soil to capture carbon which can help cool our overheated planet. I am showing a number of kinetic works, which will be exhibited along side my most recent clay stop-frame animation - also a celebration of the amazing biodiversity beneath our feet. Plus ceramic soil bacteria and mini beast specimens, first shown in Berlin last autumn, and now unveiled in London at Alchemy. In honor of #internationalsculptureday2024 we want to showcase a handful of our sculptures outside! - "Daydreamer in Red," made of steel and aluminum by Jessica Bradsher, is part of the annual DownEast Sculpture Exhibit, a public art initiative created and hosted by the Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge Gallery and Art Center. DownEast is an indoor and outdoor juried competition. The outdoor exhibition can be viewed all over Pitt County from March 2024 until February 2025. Bradsher resides in Greenville and is actively creating new work. Available for purchase, $7,000.00. "Drop," made of steel metal by Jack Gresko, is part of GMoA's Permanent Collection. It was purchased in 1981 using funds from the Rachel Maxwell Moore Art Foundation and can be viewed year-round. It is not available for purchase. - "Untitled," made of bronze metal by Jonathan Bowling, is part of GMoA's Permanent Collection. The piece was a gift to GMoA by the artist in 2001 and can be viewed year-round. Bowling resides on the outskirts of Greenville and is actively creating new work. Bowling's work can be seen throughout Greenville and eastern NC. This piece is not available for purchase. - "Dimensional Time-Space Probe," made of steel metal by Tom Grubb, is part of GMoA's Permanent Collection. It was acquired through the Rachel Maxwell Moore Art Foundation and is the largest artwork in GMoA's Collection. It is viewable year-round at the main entrance to the parking lot. My second public art sculpture “Perched & Knotted” is now installed in Morningside Park & 113th across from the pond in Harlem, NY with @harlemsculpturegardens just in time for @intsculptureday and just after #earthday Heartfelt thank you to @wharlemartfund @artcrawlharlem @dy3art @neobja for the help and support to make this sculpture come to life. “Perched & Knotted” 2024 Sculpture made with forged branches dyed with 50/50 blends of natural indigo and synthetic indigo, and rope 50/50 blends of natural madder root and synthetic eggplant dye. En ocasiones hay cosas que escapan del alcance de uno y suceden sin ni siquiera haberlas imaginado. Esa es la foto que anuncia la exposición “El pequeño museo más bello del mundo” en el cultural del ABC. Sin haberlo pensado, querido o si quiera imaginado, se ha colado una de mis piedras en esa imagen. El caso es que la vida de esa piedra ha sido interesante, por lo menos desde que nos cruzamos. La llevé a que conociese a su colega también flúor(“Sin título”, Juan Suárez), y luego le busqué un sitio (que no os puedo enseñar) para dejarla escondida. Ese sitio fue descubierto y la sacaron a una peana, de esa peana se movió a distintos lugares, entre ellos una mesa que coincidió en el momento en el que se hicieron las fotos de prensa y voilà aparece tan chula en portada. Después de esa mesa se movió a otros sitios, el lugar en el que se le perdió la pista fue en la última foto. Todo esto me ha recordado a “Wooden Boulder” de David Nash. I’m working on a scale that sometimes slips in and out of my control, which be quite uncertain at times. This monumental scale creates a sense of perspective outside of my own body. I invite others to walk underneath to get a glimpse of this as if stepping through a portal, a vortex between worlds for just a moment. Breaching the edge of an invisible periphery which extends beyond the physical space of the gallery revealing the understory and the imagined space beneath the ground or through the wall. I imagine they could be twenty meters long for all I know, entangled in the concrete and the roots of the building carving out pathways creating a subterranean network. They have become creatures fixed as architectural structures for a moment in time. A metamorphic rock, a worm that wriggles and engulfs in unkempt yet delicate motion.
