I was sitting on the balcony of Abravanel Hall last Friday evening, smiling up at the chandeliers with tears in my eyes. It was Utah Symphony’s fault. @utahsymphony @musiciansutsym I had played Scheherazade in @utahyouthsymphony on that same stage. I laughed and teared up through the whole performance because I love the music. And because I could feel the memory of the runs glide under my paralyzed fingers. I miss playing with such ease and freedom. I always will. Some of my proudest moments happened on stage at Abravanel Hall growing up. I remember weeping on that stage during the performance of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. I played principal and will never forget the feeling of standing up at the end of that performance. But there was an additional feeling of love in the hall this weekend because there are efforts to demolish it. Abravanel Hall is a treasure of SLC and Utahns want it to stay that way. After the performance, I met with other musicians and friends to watch the lighting of the name of the hall from outside. My hope is that we preserve this hall, that officials heed the wishes of their constituents, and that we get to enjoy the many soul-moving performances to come. ❤️ @saltlakecountyut @slcomayor #savethehall #saltlakecity #abravanellhall #utahsymphony

Had a wonderful time at the #utahsymphony this evening with an amazing performance of Scheherazade. Decided do take inspiration from the 1,001 Arabian Nights and do a subtle Jasmine #disneybound complete with lamp earrings. Also loved watching the sign at #abravanel be lit for the first time.

Took a jiggly jog to warm up for this afternoon’s rehearsal with @utahsymphony. This hall shaped so many of my musical memories. I sat in the center orchestra when I fell in love with Beethoven’s 6th, at the age of ten. I sang The Messiah with my siblings during the annual Messiah sing a long for years and years. PDQ Bach took a zip line onstage just above where my mother and I were sitting. I recorded an album with The Salt Lake Children’s Choir on this stage. I played both my flute (Quantz concerto in G) and sang some Handel when I won the Utah State fair music competition and auditioned for Salute To Youth. Jack Clark is 18 years old, but already he has performed in Abravanel Hall — the downtown Salt Lake City home of the Utah Symphony — several times. Clark, who lives in Layton, said he was in rehearsal with the Utah Youth Symphony, when Barbara Ann Scowcroft, one of the Utah Symphony’s violinists, talked to the student musicians about the potential fate of Abravanel Hall. The suggestion that the 45-year-old Abravanel Hall could be demolished or altered has been floated as Smith Entertainment Group — the company headed by billionaire Ryan Smith that owns the Utah Jazz and the state’s newly acquired National Hockey League franchise — begins planning for an “entertainment district” adjacent to the teams’ home at Delta Center. No decisions have been made about any of the Smith group’s proposals. Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said yesterday that the venue is due for “either a rebuild or renovation.” But which of those options officials will choose remains undecided as the Smith Entertainment Group begins making its pitch for a downtown sports and entertainment district. Presenting to the Salt Lake City Council on Tuesday, Smith group representative Mike Maughan said: “We at Smith Entertainment Group want Abravanel Hall on-site,” part of the planned downtown revitalization zone near the Delta Center. We got to attend the opera with school friends and witnessed an impressive show with performances from the #utahopera and #utahsymphony 🎻 and choir, dancers from #repertorydancetheatre 🎭 complete with a stilt walker! As we exited the theater we met Her the real Thaïs, star soprano @katy_operamom 🤩🙌 Bravo à toute l’équipe! Sofia’s middle name is Thaïs after my great grandmother. My friend @ic3sixty introduced me to Massenet’s music. Utah, as a historic preservationist there are so many reasons why it is so important to preserve historic buildings! One of the main reasons is that studies have shown that when a community understands its’ history it creates a sense of belonging. Historic or iconic buildings like Abravanel Hall have been celebrating the arts in Utah for over 40 years. They now want to knock down the building for another sports building, a building that could easily be built somewhere else.
