Thankful to God today for my Mom who taught me to fear God. No, it wasn't "I have done something wrong, so He is going to punish me" type of fear. It was a "He is the creator of the universe, and though I sin, He cared to bridge the gap by giving His only Son" type of fear. An awe, a reverence fear. To think God could care for me, a morsal in time, a flicker of the ages, and yet He cares to love me? How is that possible? And yet He does. My heart is full of thanks to Him. UNDERSTANDING THE FEAR OF THE LORD “My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2: 1-5 ESV Proverbs 2:1-5 teaches us that there is a way to handle the Word of God that will cause us to understand the fear of God. We are told to lay hold of the Word of God like we would a prized possession and then treasure it by hiding it in our hearts, seeking to know it, understand it, and apply the wisdom from the Word of God in every area of our lives. Only then will we understand the fear of the Lord because it is rooted in the knowledge of His Word and how we handle it. Therefore, we cannot understand the fear of God if we have a casual or indifferent approach to the Word of God! If we handle the Word of God rightly in obedience to Proverbs 2:1-5, it will cause us to develop a reverential fear of God, and also, we will not disregard Scriptures that warn us about the consequences of disobedience. The LORD is righteous (Psalm 11:7 ESV) and righteous in all His ways (Psalm 145:17 ESV). His ways are just and true (Revelation 15:3 ESV). He hates all who do evil (Psalm 5:5 ESV). If we approach God’s Word with the intention of growing in our knowledge and understanding of Him, we will learn what pleases Him and will be empowered by His grace to live our lives to please Him while shunning everything that is evil in His sight. WHAT IS THE FEAR OF THE LORD? “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7 ESV “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” Proverbs 9:10 ESV Proverbs 9:10 ESV and Proverbs 1:7 ESV tell us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge. The Hebrew word for fear in these verses is yirah, which means dread, fearfulness, terror, and reverence. These words describe how we ought to respond to God and His Word. We are to be in awe of God, manifesting our reverence for Him by our behavior and having a healthy fear of the consequences of disobeying God just like Noah did. When God warned Noah about God’s coming judgement, he responded in reverent fear and constructed an ark to save his family (Hebrews 11:7 ESV). In Proverbs 1:7, the word “beginning” is the Hebrew word reshiyth, which means beginning, chief, first, choice part, and principal thing. Therefore, having a reverential fear of God and a dread of the consequences of disobeying Him is not only the beginning of wisdom but also the best and the principal part of knowledge. One of the more modern translations (CEV) puts it like this: “If we show him respect, we will keep away from sin.” Perhaps this sums up what it means to fear the Lord. It implies taking his presence seriously, even when we are not thinking of him because we are focussed on other things. If you could see Jesus always standing by your side, you might well find yourself behaving differently! His physical presence would probably change the way you live and act. Perhaps you would sin less, be bolder in your witness, stop criticising and pray more! The Bible tells us that Jesus is always present. In fact, he stated in Matthew 28.20, “I am with you always”. You may not see or feel him but perhaps this is precisely why he spoke these words, assuring you that he will be with you at every moment. Good day, and grace to you, from your friends in Mississippi. Today can be a great day, to celebrate life, love, favor, and truth, regardless of where we are or what we may be facing. Gratitude is always the best filter for facing the comforts, conflicts, and circumstances of daily living. How is it even possible in such a tumbling and turbulent world? We need BALANCE — the right kind of BALANCE! Why? BALANCE, in an unstable society, IS essential for being GROUNDED and GRIPPED by what is right — especially when much of what we see is so wrong among so many GRAPPLING with what is right. We’ve taken a plunge this month, jumping heart-deep into the rich rich waters of wisdom — found in the crystal clear waters of Proverbs. The opening verses, in the first chapter, give us the reason, reach, and resources — that the writer intended to deliver. His audience is broad and his aim is tight — that he may see life-changing truths distilled and delivered from generation to generation. And like my dad taught me and now I teach my grand arrows about turtles. If the head and tail are out, watch out. Not all turtles are built the same. Some are shy and timid and would rather hide inside… but some are mean and keen, for they will fight and bite before they take flight. This week we’ve stumbled upon both. And prayerfully these experiences and teachings will keep them from grabbing the wrong turtle the wrong way. So if you’ll give me a minute I’ll throw some tips your way or give you a little something to ponder about Proverbs. The word “Proverb” means “like” or “similar” conveying the idea of being “a rule” or “rule of thumb.” A rule of thumb is usually defined as a broadly accurate guide/principle that usually governs a thing based on practice or experience rather than theory. Proverbs are truth… concentrated and condensed truth…
I wonder what the world would look like if we had more guys who would imitate St. Joseph. When I think of St. Joseph, I think of several things, Hardworking, Faithful, Strong, Committed, Fear of the Lord, Wise, Respectful, I know there are more attributes but these come to mind. #LeadershipMonday “You have need to be taught again what are the first elements of the words of God.” (Hebrews 5:12) They should also be trained in the practise of virtue, because it is not sufficient to know what is good, but the good must be actually practised, even as one who has finished a course in medicine, later on applies his science practically. For practice gives to the mind greater skill than mere knowledge of principles. And as those that are still deficient are usually slow in exercising themselves in virtue, it is necessary that they be urged to it occasionally by others. Master’s, therefore, are wont to exercise the disciples whom they desire to advance in perfection in diverse virtues,—now in humility, now in fraternal charity, now in self-control, now in devotion, now in patience, chastity, silence, obedience, etc., so that, practiced in this way, these virtues become habits, and the vices opposed to them are eradicated.
