Tonight’s #sweatyselfie features some guest stars and the whole reason I started running in the first place. I’ve never been a runner. There was a time - a very short period and a very long time ago - that I once ran an 8 minute mile. I think I was in 7th grade and I was determined to earn the presidential fitness medal (is that even a thing anymore?) I quickly learned that sports that only involved short spurts of running were more my speed and I started focusing my energy there. Fast forward 25 years and now as a mama of 2, I find myself trying to run again….for them. I was tired of not having energy to keep up with my kids, of not being able to breathe going up the stairs, of being tired all the time. So 2 years ago - I bought a treadmill and I started running. I still suck at it if I’m being honest. I’m slow. My heart rate is way too high (I live at 90-100 at rest). My legs often feel like jello. My back hurts from tensing too much. But I’m still grinding and I’m still trying. Trying to be the best version of me for them….even if they are hatchet wielding monsters 🤣🤣 So here we are - on day 2 of marathon training. So yesterday I did something crazy. I registered to run Dopey. If you’re not familiar with the #rundisney community - that’s 4 days of 2 am wake up calls for a 5k, 10k, half marathon, and full marathon….in that order. Y’all, I’ve never run more than a half marathon and that has always been a struggle (read that - walked a lot of a half marathon). I’m going to need all the motivation and accountability I can get so get ready as this back of the pack runner with terrible form and shin splints gets ready to tackle her biggest fitness goal yet. I can’t believe it’s real, but here we are. Early this morning I made sure to get 2.62 miles in (in honor of the 26.2), and I guess it helped! I only hit snooze 3 times this morning… Last night before he went to bed, my 6 year old told me “mommy don’t forget you need to get up and run”. That was motivation enough to drag my butt out of bed. I don’t want to let him down. I didn’t want him to wake up and find out I didn’t do what I said I would. I told him this morning thank you - thank you for being the reason I push myself and he just smiled the biggest smile I’ve ever seen. Tomorrow (😳) marks the first day that club runDisney can sign up for Marathon weekend 2025 and I’m not going to lie to you- I’m mildly completely entirely scared out of my mind. Yes I’ve done it before. Yes I’ve trained it before. Yes there’s some comfort in knowing what to expect but the fear lies in what if’s of the next 281 days. What if I get injured. What if I burn out. What if I decide to skip workouts. What if I fall behind on videos again. What if. BUT…..and it’s a big ‘ol but…. What if it goes better than I imagined. Absolutely didn’t want to get out here today. Absolutely didn’t. Had, in fact, talked myself out of it. Not mentally feeling it, still sore from Saturday, and had a million other things I “needed” to do instead. But then I decided a walk was better than no movement at all so that’s what we did- and it felt great to just move. The lesson is this: showing up anyway is better than sitting at home. Barring a physical ailment there was zero excuse to not show up tonight. These lofty goals are not something you can faith, trust, and pixie dust your way to. You have to put in the work. A bit overdue of a post but St. Patrick’s day was an absolute blast! 🍀💚🍺This race was my first ever 5K and I love looking at the differences year to year. The first time I ran this in 2019 I finished with a 31:13 time. Six years later I’m placing in my age group with 2 seconds away from another PR at 25:30. I had truly hit a rut in running for awhile and felt like I had peaked and would never see a 25 minute 5K again. Now this has become a new consistent pace. Never give up on yourself friends. Gorgeous weather yesterday on my run! Slightly cool with a beautiful sunset. 😍 I’m still working out the injury kinks and with 26 days until Springtime race weekend, I’m a it nervous about the distance. The good news is that my ankles have been feeling a LOT better and if I could only get this knee in check, I feel like I would be golden for this season’s races. I am proud of myself for getting this run in with how insanely busy my work week has been. Physical therapy last night after a looooooong day yesterday went pretty well. We’ve introduced some items to help with my knee issues to hopefully get stronger so I can feel good during those Springtime Surprise races. It’s SO close and I am feeling slightly panicked that I’m not 💯.
