I always loved the way Camilla was written, this book showed just how powerful, strong, and smart she truly is. The love that Nico and Camilla have for eachother can make anyone swoon ❤️ There were so many twists and turns and my goodness I did not see the ending coming!! I seriously cannot believe the plot twist, I was literally shocked, but also thankful. 🚂 Review of City of Mirth and Malice by @alexislmenard 🚂 4.5 ⭐️ When I tell you I have been counting down the days til I could get my hands on this story I am not joking!! Book 1 was incredible and was left on such a cliffhanger I have been itching to find out what happens next! It should therefore come as no surprise that when Alexis released her ARC signup list I practically sprinted to sign up! Thankyou Alexis! To my relief, the story picks up where book 1 left off - I much prefer this to ‘six months later’ beginnings! It started off a tad slow but the pace soon picked up and we were thrown into the action. This book felt slightly darker than the first but there were also more loving and joyful moments to balance that out. I feel like we saw so much more from the main characters too, in terms of their feelings and motivations, especially with the various schemes and plots that took place in this book. You know a book is good when you start to have strong feelings towards a character and I felt like giving Aramis a swift jab to the face on multiple occasions! As I suspected, I absolutely loved the vibes in this - but the politics, the dramatic scenes, the suspense, the romance and romantic tension (the pet names made a great reappearance too) were spot on. I couldn’t help but root for good outcomes, especially when the stakes were so high and so many characters were involved. 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 by: alexis l. menard rating: ★★★★★ City of Mirth and Malice was everything I wanted and more! Second installment syndrome, who? Packed with action, I was left on the edge of my seat for most of the book, especially at the end. The stakes only get higher, and the romance only gets better. The astounding development in the characters, the magic system, and the plot come together seamlessly for a fantastic conclusion to Nicolai and Camilla’s story. A lot is going on in this book, but Alexis does a stunning job of not overcomplicating the plot. It’s not difficult to follow, but more than enthralling to where I could not put the book down. The magic system, as intricate as it is, is easy to understand, making it more captivating and enjoyable. It was endearing to see Nico and Camilla grow as individuals and as a couple. Sometimes, with enemies-to-lovers and rivals-to-lovers, I enjoy the former much more than the latter, but that wasn’t the case with Nicolai and Camilla. I loved seeing them happy together and work through their disagreements. Nico had me swooning every time he said “my wife” and “spoiled little heiress.” A duet was the perfect length to tell their story, but I wish we were getting more of them. I love Nicolai and Camilla too much to say goodbye. House of Bane and Blood, City of Mirth and Malice, welcome to my short list of favorite duets! I can’t wait for the next book in the series! Mini-review: House of Bane & Blood / City of Mirth & Malice 🔥✨ ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 I read #HouseofBaneandBlood in October and was so excited to return to the series when its sequel, #CityofMirthandMalice came out a few weeks ago! This series has Peaky Blinders/mob family vibes with magical elements — I haven’t read a world like it before. ✨what I loved✨ These books have all my favorite tropes: Rivals to lovers > marriage of convenience > found family. Camilla & Nico’s chemistry is fantastic and so fun to read! I really enjoyed getting to know both characters and their world. ✨what I wanted more of✨ Both books are jam-packed with world-building and the plot execution sometimes felt a bit rushed and scattered. Yet, when it takes its time, these books are a hell of a lot of fun!! There’s soooo much potential here, and I will gladly keep reading if the author decides to continue Milla & Nico’s story!

City of Mirth and Malice - Alexis L Menard I was so terribly excited about this one, and couldn't wait for my physical copy to get here to get started. The book is stunning and I loved the recap at the start. I will be straight up and honest before I say anything about this book - I've not had the best week. I was heavy in the non-verbal/selectively mute with low executive function this week. I usually see my autism as a positive (I could write about that somewhere else) but every now and again it gets me where it hurts. This was one of those weeks. And because of that, I struggled to enjoy this book as much as I wanted to/knew that I would. If 'fast paced' means something is happening in every chapter, that lives are at stake, that each conversation holds vital information, the story moves forward, and each chapter ending is a mini cliffhanger in itself - then this is that. And normally I'd gobble that up in days. But this week I needed something where nothing happened. No stakes. Happy farm life ('Go Tell the Bee's I'm Home' type stuff) meets living in the Shire. So the fast paced, high stakes of this wasn't my jam this week, but I know I would appreciate it when I'm in a better gear! I'm looking forward to more in this universe. The setup for 'more' was great. I know we're done with Nico and Milla, but not with this series, and the setup for the wider concept was good - I want more of that for sure. I'm not rating this just yet - not until I feel more myself. I finished these two wonderful books over the past 5 days, and I didn’t want them to end. I cried, and I laughed, and I held on tight to my family when I needed someone to hold onto. These books will get you. I love the main FMC and MMC Mila and Nico, while they may get on each other’s nerves sometimes, they always find a way to tell each other that they love each other. Even when they thought they were enemies in the first book. Now to wait for their story to continue in whenever the next book comes out. 🐍Order and Chaos Duet🐍 Ummmm HELLO?! This series!!! You guys DO NOT sleep on this! The first book, House of Bane and Blood, is the perfect introduction to this world. You get to know the characters and see their relationship grow and fall in love with this badass pair. Then book 2 comes around and leaves you speechless with the world expansion, character building and the spiceeeeee. I love that we get to see Nico and his cousins interact and show their love and loyalty to each other. I love that we get to see Camilla be a TOTAL BOSS. This book is fast paced and action-packed! I know I was at the edge of my seat in the last book, but this book seriously had me holding my breath and taking breaks after every other chapter or so because 𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙨𝙨𝙨!! Just like the Shelbys in Peaky Blinders, this poor family can’t catch a damn break 😮‍💨 but also just like the Shelbys, you can’t help but root for them, however morally grey they are- especially now at the cost of potentially losing everything they’ve worked for and obvi their future 🥺 The characters are EVERYTHING. This book did such an amazing job bringing each of the character’s complex layers and histories into the story and giving us a wider view of their purpose and motivation in an intense and emotional world of dangerous magic, alchemy, science, dirty politics & powerful secrets. I love the whole theme wrapping up Order and Chaos. It was so elegantly delivered with the plot still easy to follow. I also enjoyed the overall theme of family- new and old- that is definitely a little deeper and a little more complicated in this book than the last. With tensions so high and at the brink of war, you’ll find yourself constantly questioning and second guessing who to believe and who to trust. It was all so intense, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride!! I know I shared about this book and my review the other week, but I love this duology soo much that I wanted to hype it up even more! There are so many books out there that I love. But I can count on 1, maybe 2 hands the series that REALLY stick out to me. The series that leave a lasting impression on your heart and a soul. The Order and Chaos series by Alexis Menard is absolutely part of that list. This book and series is a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me. I fell head over heels in love with House of Bane and Blood last year and squealed when City of Mirth and Malice hit my Kindle. I love Alexis’s writing style. It sucked me right in from page one. The writing flows so well and you get lost inside the story, not wanting to let go. Each chapter is engaging and exciting and I found myself constantly saying “ok just one more chapter” when I should have been adulting. Camilla and Nico are definitely a top book couple for me. They are strong, bold and fiercely protective to those they love. They will stop at nothing to protect each other and seeing them in action is anxiety provoking and passionate. 📚 Book Review 📚 City of Mirth and Malice by Alexis Menard ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 "Blood remnants are in the blood. Bane in the bone. Mirth in the mind. But chaos? Chaos was formed from the Creator's soul." A dynamite follow up to House of Bane and Blood. ThIs is one of those books that you can picture as a well done HBO mini series. The grit of the steam trains and gaslamp setting, the duelling families, the monsters and magic. You get a feel for the world building and turf lines while Nico plans to break Camilla out of the Hightower. I liked the lore of Chaos and the magic system of the remnants/descendants. I thought Camilla's powers were super interesting and I just wish we got a bit more history. But hopefully that's an upcoming book 😉... There were a lot of plot twists and maneuvering. I was constantly on edge wondering who was going to take out the Attanos. I hated Milla's brother throughout! After the eventful end of the first book, our main couple spend the first third of this sequel apart, as Nico tries to make his way back to Camilla. She is suffering in captivity as she undergoes tests and Nico is on a quest to save her. Camilla has endured a lot, but Nico tries his best to change what she sees as flaws and weakness to the strengths in her and what she has endured. The rest of the book is a lot of political games, so if you like that trope coupled with fantasy, this one is for you! Also a must read if you love the “my wife” trope!! Book Tour & Book Review . . . Before I start this is book two of a duology, House of Bane and Blood is where this party starts and should be read before reading City of Mirth and Malice. I thought I enjoyed the first book and I am so happy to say I enjoyed the second far more. I believe there was more depth in this book with some of the world building “out of the way”. I felt a lot of questions I had in the first book about the magic wielders and the political system were answered. This book still follows this fresh peaky blinders, fantasy, dark, magic filled plot-line that works perfectly all together. Nico is swoon worthy. A man who would destroy the world and all its inhabitants if Milla asked. The ups and downs of their relationship came to a nice point by the end of the book. The build of their relationship with everything going on around them fit the incredibly chaotic air that the two of them had. They weren’t a fairytale couple but they were deep. There were so many twists and turns in the first book and that theme followed in the second. You need to make sure you keep up with what’s happening, but it’s a fun time while you’re running from the next problem along with them. We pick up soon after the chaos of HOBAB and everyone is struggling to cope with the events and betrayals that left them shattered. The world and magic system continues to expand as we uncover more secrets threatening to disrupt the descendants and everything they’ve worked so hard to build for themselves. There is non stop action as alliances are tested, boundaries are obliterated, and nothing will stop Nico from regaining all that he has lost. Nico and Milla have such a beautiful relationship and I loved watching them grow, both individually and together. They will burn the world for each other and it shows in every decision they make. When no one is to be trusted, they rely on each other time and time again, proving that their love can withstand anything thrown at them. I definitely want to be apart of the Attano family. The fierce love and loyalty they show for those they claim as their own is everything Milla needed. And boy, are those boundaries tested time and time again! The ending was beautifully written and while I was completely satisfied with the way their story ends, I am definitely eager to experience more from this world and these characters.
