Philip Lindsey was a Presbyterian minister and college president. Here he talks about the sabbath and focusing on the character of Jesus. Lindsley says that Jesus had a meek, amiable, cheerful, and benevolent temper, and that this is a pleasure of religion to be recommended to others. We are to be instrumental of good all around us, and have nothing gloomy, painful, selfish, or austere about us. Before we go accuse Lindsey of saying only certain personality types can get into heaven, we should examine whether the “spirit” of Christianity that we display to others has anything to do with Jesus. It is interesting that Lindsley puts “selfish” so close to “austere”: can we be so mad about things not going our way— or even our own very specific vision of God’s way— that we are just grumpy and no fun to be around at all? In an article entitled “Thinking Biblically about Social Justice”, Thaddeus Williams gave these warnings. ⚠️”If a view of justice blames all evil on external systems of oppression while ignoring Solomon’s pride-deflating insight that our own hearts are full of evil and moral insanity (Eccles. 9:3) then it is not true justice. ⚠️If a view of justice deconstructs relationships in terms of “power differentials” and argues that all such hierarchies are oppressive and must be abolished in the name of “equality” then it is not true justice. ⚠️If a view of justice interprets all truth, reason and logic as mere constructs of the oppressive class, if it encourages us to dismiss someone’s viewpoint on the basis of their skin tone or gender, then it is not true justice. ⚠️If a view of justice encourages rage and resentment toward people groups as a motivator for social activism then it is not true justice. ⚠️If a view of justice breaks people into group identities, generating a spirit of mutual suspicion, hostility, fear, labeling, offended-ness and preoccupation with one’s subjective feelings then it is not true justice. ⚠️If a view of justice treats individuals as exemplars or ciphers of their identity groups, attributing goodness or guilt on the basis of skin tone, gender or social status, then it is not true justice. ⚠️If a view of justice seeks behavior modification, often through intimidation, speech codes and ideological re-education, then it is not true justice. ⚠️If a view of justice teaches that the human telos (i.e., our ultimate purpose and meaning) is defined by the creature, and that anyone who challenges our self-defined telos is an oppressor, then it is not true justice.” Great warnings! If you're looking for a book that evaluates social justice from the lens of the Bible, I heartily recommend Why Social Justice Is Not Biblical Justice: An Urgent Appeal to Fellow Christians in a Time of Social Crisis by Scott David Allen. It's an outstanding look at how Christians can better understand the origins of the social justice movement and its ideology while comparing it to God's heart for the nations, His definition of justice as found in Scripture, and what it means for Christians to care for the least of these (Matthew 25:31-46). I love that this book isn't afraid to examine critical race theory and critical social theory and get into the weeds of explaining the differences between communitive justice and distributive justice, amongst other terminology and concepts. The author does an excellent job of highlighting why regarding humanity through the sole lens of a power struggle between oppressor and oppressed is ultimately destructive, and how Christians should pursue God's perfect justice instead. One of the reasons I continually turn to this book is because I'm professionally trained in the fields spoken of in this book, which I admit is an interesting space to be in as a Christian. While I'm well-versed in social justice vocabulary and tenets and can understand where people are coming from, I constantly have to evaluate these teachings against the Bible. That's where this book makes a meaningful difference to me both personally and professionally. The teachings that the author delves into line up with what I have learnt so there is no sensationalizing of the material, and its outcomes are accurate with what I've seen from people who operate from a social justice worldview. I appreciate that this book does not minimize the need for Christians to respond to social crises, but that it affirms why God's comprehensive biblical justice is the mindset we should be operating from instead of the world's. This book is a thoughtful treatment of so many of the social issues facing the church today, and would be an informative read for anyone involved in ministry or curious about the subject matter. #christianbooks #christiannonfiction #biblicaljustice

Reflection: Justice Starts Within By John Tillman If evil was just a few regrettable actions by a few misguided people, we’d be “god” enough to handle it. We could just “do better,”... The problem with evil is that it is not isolated in bad apples. Solzhenitsyn said, “the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?” Paul said, “I want to do good, evil is right there with me...who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Romans 7.21-25) Justice must start within. Jesus confronts our tainted hearts, comforting us when suffering under wickedness, while simultaneously discomforting us by attacking our wickedness. If we allow him to, he will go beyond destroying the evil piece of our heart. He will give us a brand new heart that will grieve injustice and work for justice, both inwardly and outwardly. The Bible is full of calls for justice. We dig deep into this in March, but for now, just a bit as we discuss race and the church this week. The book of Exodus shares the deliverance of subjugated people from political oppression and economic exploitation. In the New Testament, Jesus was not indifferent to social issues; in fact, he was crucified because he stood against the oppressive forces of the current political regime. Obery M. Hendricks Jr in ‘The Politics of Jesus’ writes, “To say that Jesus was a political revolutionary is to say that the message he proclaimed not only called for change in individual hearts but also demanded sweeping and comprehensive change in the political, social and economic structures in his setting in life. “ The Bible is full of language to “do justice. love mercy. walk humbly,” yet white Christians's behavior and beliefs often show otherwise. Need data? In a July 2020 article by Robert P Jones, he shares, “Surveys conducted by PRRI in 2018 found that white Christians…are nearly twice as likely as religiously unaffiliated whites to say the killings of Black men by police are isolated incidents rather than part of a pattern of how police treat African Americans. And white Christians are about 30% points more likely to say monuments to Confederate soldiers are symbols of Southern pride rather than symbols of racism. It may be time to look at our hearts and step away from the current political rhetoric. Maybe it is time to put our defenses down. Maybe just maybe, Christianity could mean something different.
