#CELEBRATE #BLACKHISTORY: After a life defining car accident, #GardnerTaylor decided to forego law school to go into ministry and would become pastor of Concord #Baptist Church in Brooklyn. Taylor emerged as one of the leaders of the civil rights movements and was often right by Martin Luther King Jr.’s side for boycotts, marches, and rallies. In 1961, Taylor and King founded the Progressive National Baptist Convention to continue to support the civil rights movement from within the church. Gardner was dubbed ‘dean of American preaching’ due to his teaching and trainings of the faith to his congregation and other ministers. He is a father of our faith and we celebrate him this month. #CELEBRATE #BLACKHISTORY: From humble beginnings in Daytona, Florida, Howard Thurman’s family sacrificed everything for him to be educated. He would go on to graduate from Morehouse and Colgate Rochester Divinity school. He later returned to Morehouse to become Director of Religious Life at Morehouse and Spelman Colleges and then first dean of Andrew Rankin Chapel at Howard University. While leading a negro delegation to Southeast Asia, Thurman met Mahondas #Ghandi where he learned to practice non-violent direct action. #HowardThurman would go on to found what is recognized as the first racially integrated, interfaith church in San Francisco and would continue his fight for non-violent civil rights reform by advising many black leaders including Jesse Jackson, Marian Wright Edelman, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Do you know other #BlackTheologians or Church leaders who helped shape our Faith? PT envisions a world that is rooted in love, pursues the equity of all people, and amplifies God’s call on every life. We have faith in a God who transforms us and the broken systems in our world and who calls us to embody love and work for justice. This week we celebrate the work of Dr. James Cone. Cone was an American Methodist minister and theologian. He is best known for his advocacy of black liberation theology. He was the Charles Augustus Briggs Distinguished Professor of Systematic Theology at Columbia University-affiliated Union Theological Seminary until his death. “The gospel of Jesus is not a rational concept to be explained in a theory of salvation, but a story about God’s presence in Jesus’ solidarity with the oppressed, which led to his death on the cross. What is redemptive is the faith that God snatches victory out of defeat, life out of death, and hope out of despair.” ― James H. CELEBRATE #BLACKHISTORY: #OctaviaAlbert, an emancipated slave, was a teacher and ordained minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church. She settled with her family in #Louisiana where she became known as a #community and religious leader. During the reconstruction era, church members would gather at her kitchen table to tell the stories of their lives as slaves. Octavia recorded and published these stories in a book titled The House of Bondage. She hoped to accurately represent the black slave experience and create narratives that would serve as reminders for generations to come, just as the Lord commanded Israel to do about their slavery and deliverance. She is a mother of our #faith and we honor her this month. Do you know other #BlackTheologians or #Church leaders who helped shape our Faith? Share BELOW 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽

CELEBRATE #BLACKHISTORY: Born a slave, #HarrietTubman escaped around 1849 through the underground railroad. Although she found work as a maid, she could not enjoy her newfound freedom without her family or the knowledge of so many who were still enslaved. Despite the warnings of many, Harriet planned a return to #Maryland to free others. One trip turned into 19 trips and it is estimated that Harriet, whose nickname became Moses, freed over 300 slaves. She never ceased looking to God for guidance and direction on these treacherous trips. “Twasn’t me, twas the Lord! I always told him ‘I trust you. I don’t know where to go or what to do but I expect you to lead me,’ and He always did.” She is a mother of our faith and we honor her this month. For #blackhistorymonth, join us as we #celebrate and learn about the black men and women who have helped to shape our faith. Tertullian of Tunisia who was born in Carthage and learned of the Christian movement while traveling through Rome. By the end of the 2nd century, Carthage had emerged as a cultural epicenter, which included a strongly established church. #Tertullian became a leader in the North African church and one of its most prominent theologians and apologists. He wrote significant texts on topics including the resurrection, baptism, and prayers, many of which helped to shape Western Christianity as we know it today. #CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY: Born in Egypt, Athansius served as secretary to the bishop of Alexandria, traveling with him to the famed Council of Nicaea where Jesus’ divinity was debated among Christian world leaders. Later, Athanasius would enter the priesthood and be elected as bishop of Alexandria himself. Defending the full deity of Jesus as God would become Athansisus’ legacy. He devoted countless writings and teachings to this cause, which have shaped our theological understanding of Jesus’ divine nature. He is a father of our faith and we honor him this month. Reading scripture can be a really beautiful tool in reclaiming our theology. And, as the Bible has been used to wield a lot of pain and injustice, reading it can come with pretty serious baggage. There’s a lot of text in this stack so let me just reiterate this piece: The amount of scripture you read does not decide your goodness, your closeness to God, or your inherent worth. And, if reading the bible feels important to you, you are worth finding a way to interact with scripture that takes care of you and others. If this whole topic feels tricky- know you’re not alone.🤎 Edit to add: So thankful to have received a call out/redirection that “blindly accept” is an ableist term. We take full responsibility that we messed up. We will leave this post up in accountability, but will be using the term “accept without question” from here on out. Our sincere apologies to anyone who felt alienated or were hurt - we have learned, will learn, and will do better. #Scripture #Theology #Deconstruction #Exvangelical #ReligiousTrauma #PurityCulture #BIPOCSpirituality #BlackTheologians #Deconstruct #BibleBetter #BibleStudy #ReclaimingMyTheology

Black Theologians Everyone Should Know. Wk 3. Gardner C. Taylor (1918-2015) was widely recognized for his skills as a preacher, and has often been called the “dean of the nation’s black preachers.” In addition to serving as a Baptist minister in his home state of Louisiana and New York, Rev. Taylor advocated for civil rights alongside his close friend Martin Luther King Jr. He was often seen by King’s side during the Montgomery Bus Boycott and co-founded the Progressive National Baptist Convention when the National Baptist Convention refused to support the Civil Rights Movement. Rev. Taylor was one of the first African Americans elected to the New York City Board of Education and was the first Black president of the New York City Council of Churches. He served in ministry for nearly sixty years until his retirement in 1990. When asked in 2006, about the role of churches and preachers in addressing social issues, Rev. Taylor responded, “And if the church does not, if the preacher does not, the priest does not, the rabbi does not, the church does not, who will? And when? When a pulpit becomes an echo of the pew, it loses, I think, almost all of its reasons for existence.” We encourage you to continue to learn more about Rev. Gardner C. Black Theologians Everyone Should Know. Wk 2. Octavia V. Rogers Albert (1853-1889) was a slave for the first ten years of her life, until the emancipation of 1863. She saw teaching as a form of worship and Christian service, and devoted her life to teaching reading and writing to Black families. “Albert’s Louisiana home became a gathering place for Blacks in the Reconstruction era,” explains Bible teacher Nana Dolce. “She captures their stories, some 250 years of black history, from her kitchen table and challenges the vestiges of chattel slavery with the gospel of Christ.” Albert is best known for interviewing ex-slaves and writing down their stories in what would be published as The House of Bondage. The compilation of narratives captured the inhumanity of slavery and how it impacted individuals. Albert wrote, “When I pause and think over the hard punishments of the slaves by the whites, many of whom professed to be Christians, I am filled with amazement . . . We know we have passed from death unto life because we love the brethren.” We encourage you to continue to learn more about Octavia V. Rogers Albert and her ministry. What does it look like to diversify our theological influences and pay attention to wisdom from the margins? 👀 As Dr Brenda Salter McNeil (@saltermcneil) in her book “Roadmap to Reconciliation” reminds us, “Our theology informs our anthropology, which in turn informs our sociology. That is to say, what we believe about God will tell us what we believe about people, and what we believe about people will tell us what kinds of communities and societies we believe we should strive to create." During Black History Month we are centering wisdom from Black theologians to have them shape the way we imagine who God is and how peace and wholeness looks like in our communities. We hope that it inspires your imagination and action for hopeful community transformation 💫 We’d also love your help diversifying our organizational bookshelf! As a movement committed to having our training, spiritual formation resources and activity formed and informed from the margins and diversity of BIPOC voices, this month we are looking for suggestions for books by Black theologians, and book contributions in various ways - including a book swap opportunity 📚 Click the link in bio or visit servantpartners.ca/bhm to participate! #blackhistorymonth #blacktheology #blacktheologians #christiancommunitydevelopment #urbanministry #christiansocialjustice #reconciliation #roadmaptoreconciliation

Black Theologians Everyone Should Know. Wk 1. Lemuel Haynes (1753-1833) was an indentured servant as a child and fought in the American Revolutionary War before becoming the first Black man to be ordained as a minister in the United States. (He was also the first African American to receive an honorary Master of Arts.) He served as a pastor for forty years, thirty of them with an all-white congregation in Vermont. Rev. Haynes was known for his deep fidelity to his congregation, his passion for understanding grace and the cross, and his outspoken opposition to slavery and colonization. "Liberty is equally as precious to a black man, as it is to a white one,” he wrote, “and bondage as equally as intolerable to the one as it is to the other." Rev. Now that modesty/purity culture are under scrutiny lots of folks have been saying “well- modesty is about your heart, and your posture”. Sure, but ya’ll weren’t saying that in the same way before. There’s a reason our DMs are full of stories of rules about spaghetti strap widths and t-shirts over swimsuits. We need to come to terms with this truth ⤴️ Modesty has been a tool to control women and queer folk’s bodies, to the benefit of men in power. Even if there’s a time and place for internal humility- the time is now to come to terms with the shame, grief, and disembodiment modesty culture has caused. #Modesty #PurityCulture #BlackTheology #BlackTheologians #ReclaimingMyTheology **In this post & episode we are talking about and critiquing the Christian expression of Modesty culture as a tool of Purity Culture in Christian spaces. There’s a larger conversation about modesty outside of Christianity, or in other religions and that is not the conversation we are having here.

We each live out the answer to Dr. King’s infamous question differently—some of us loudly on a mic or in the streets, but many of us more quietly, more subtly. In the spirit of Dr. King, swipe to explore books on the intersection of contemplative faith, courageous activism, and bold love. #BroadleafBooks #MartinLutherKingJr #MLKJr #Equality #CivilRights #MartinLutherKingJrQuotes #HowardThurman #HowardThurmanQuote #RacialJustice #BlackTheologians #BlackLeadership #BlackLegacy #BlackExcellence #BlackHistory #BlackHistory365 #BlackHistoryEveryday #BlackHistoryIsEveryday #BlackHistoryBootcamp #BlackHistoryBooks #CivilRights #BlackAuthors #BlackChurch

If I had to anthropomorphize God I would say that she is a Black woman. I just LOVE Black female theological voices. They just seem to get it and tell it like it is! #mitzismith #womanist #theology #straightnochaser #blacktheologians #blackseminarians #britedivinity

If you’re into Bible studies … Or liberation stories … Or antiracism embedded into your faith journey. Or toppling old ways of domination. Or Love stories. Because Liberation is always about Love, right? Check out @asistasjourney’s new study. (I’ve linked to it in my bio.) This is the first Exodus Bible study for everyday people written by a “theologically trained and tested African-American woman.” That means something. A modern Miriam. Or as I said in my endorsement, “This study itself is an exodus out of old ways being, doing and thinking. Natasha is a trusted guide, a faithful leader, a Moses figure for our time. I sit at her feet to be edified and liberated from oppressive ways.”

James Cone offers prophetic critique centered on the power of the cross, boldly naming the wounds of our collective past in the hope that Christ’s redemptive light shines in the darkest places of this world. Cone calls us all toward the liberation that our crucified Lord makes possible and, like Jesus, we too find freedom through the cross. • This is the last of four posts in honor of #blackhistorymonth in which we highlighted Black theologians, contemporary and historical, who have contributed profoundly to our theology and beliefs here at ATN, and who continue to speak God’s truth through their lives and writings. • Go to the link in bio for more about James H. Dr. Parker shows how the doctrines of inerrancy and infallibility are less about the Bible itself and more about the arbiters of its interpretation—historically, White males in power who have used Scripture to justify control over marginalized groups. When most people think about historic Christian nations, our minds may go to medieval Europe and the rich history of Christianity that grew there. ⠀ ⠀ While European Christianity has a lot to offer, did you know that an African country was a thriving Christian nation centuries before Christianity took root in European countries like England, Ireland, Russia or Sweden?⠀ ⠀ Read more on today's blog. Dr. Esau McCaulley (@esaumccaulley) continuously calls the church toward the way of Jesus as it too often finds itself torn between the left and the right. As a renowned academic and devoted follower of Christ, McCaulley combines rigorous scholarship with personal devotion as he lifts his prophetic voice to glorify God and call the church further up and further into God’s kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. • This is the second of four posts in honor of #blackhistorymonth in which we’ll be highlighting Black theologians, contemporary and historical, who have contributed profoundly to our theology and beliefs here at ATN, and who continue to speak God’s truth through their lives and writings. • Go to the link in bio for more about Esau McCaulley. • #blackhistory #blacktheologians #esaumccaulley #readingwhileblack #allthingsnew #allthingsnewchurch
