Edward A. Lawrence, Sr., was a Congregationalist minister in New England. Here he writes on Christian beneficence, which he says he the mission of the church, and an essential element of the work of the early church. The church should found hospitals, dispensaries, and asylums. These will aid, and systemically ensure service to all, in the various ministries of the works of mercy. These institutions had no name before the church came along. Lawrence says the ultimate purpose is to “recover this guilty and lost world to the service and enjoyment of God.” Today, aren’t hospitals more likely to be the point of Christian exasperation: costing too much, doing operations we don’t approve of, employing immigrants from the wrong countries, harboring terrorists ? Is today’s Christian exasperation the will of God, or more like the pre-Christian pagan beliefs of Rome, where life was cheap? If you objected to what I wrote, does the word “systemic” seem an over-the-top approach? Would we rather let a hodge-podge array of random motivations for 1:1 charity? Better to let some fall through the cracks rather than let an institution do something? Well, these views are surely not required from the Bible, and not in tune with its best tradition. Our Year 10 Agriculture students and Year 11 Geography students enjoyed a fantastic overnight camp full of enriching learning experiences in the Hunter Valley. Students loved their “outdoor classroom” for the camp where the farming fields at Tocal Homestead enabled our Year 10 Agriculture students to study animal and plant-based enterprises, exploring the practical experiences of raising and maintaining farm animals such as sheep and chicken and dairy farming. Simultaneously, our Year 11 Geography students studied under the sun amidst the vines of Tamburlaine vineyard, focusing on the theme of ’People and Economic Activity’, conducting a case study on viticulture which included growing grapes: produce to production. Students enjoyed the camp, discovering God’s resources and human culture making, the fun together and the hands-on learning experiences. The General Agreement Within The Sect Is That Since God Is Sovereign Over All Aspect Of Human Behaviour There's Really No Urgency Toward Repentance Or Making Necessary Amends In Favour Of A More Truthfully Righteous Direction. The Agreement Further Goes To Say That God Is Going To Bend Every Devious Act Of Disobedience To Work For The Good Of Those Who Fault, Since Salvation Is Strictly By Grace And Not Of Works. But Then You Have To Stop And Think If Maybe There Is A Generational Curse In Full Effect Which Has Created A Strong Barrier Between These People And Godly Spiritual Logic. God Is Sovereign, So They Claim. Hence There's Really No Point Striving For Righteousness. The Idea Is That It Is Fruitless To Pursue Righteousness Since We Can All Lie And Be As Evil As Possible And Every Deceitful Choice Would Still Work Out In The Best Interest Of Those Who Live Their Lives Accordingly. They May As Well Eat Poison In The Hope That They Will Not Die. Or Maybe They Could Go Jump Off A Bridge And God's Sovereignty Would Lovingly Keep Their Body Parts From Severing Soon As They Smash Against Concrete. We have farewelled Bruce the bull cow who returned to Sydney University to join his mates as part of a joint Harvard University study. During his 3-week stay, our Year 9 students learned about his formula prep, feeding, bottle washing and daily care. We will miss Bruce. We also welcomed Tarzan and Ulysses, two young alpacas who will be part of our Year Ten Alpaca study unit. Students will learn about Alpacas and how to care for them. Having these amazing animals as part of our Agricultural studies allows students to enjoy a range of benefits with hands on experience.
