Tulips make me smile. There’s just something about their shape and the fact that they’re so delicate but also look so strong. They’re my favorite flower. And these beauties (along with daffodils) are actually blooming so late in my area. To me, they ARE light… and I’m so incredibly grateful for them. My son’s old pee-wee football coach, who passed away too young several years ago, was an amazing man who knew the incredible power of the light that we each possess. At his memorial service, his sister told us how, as a little boy, he made it his mission in life to make at least one person smile every day. And he did! I was so inspired by that… so the day after the service, I saw a sad-looking older woman sitting on a bench in front of the lockers at my gym. She was a stranger to me, but I just walked up to her with as bright a smile as I could muster and exclaimed “Hi!” And her face went from frowning to simply BEAMING. I’ve never forgotten that experience and it’s something that stays with me as I interact with others in my daily life. We CAN and do make a difference. Whether that difference has a positive or negative effect comes down to CHOICE. As tulips smile up at me, they bring ME joy. That’s what true blooming (my word this year!) is about; that’s what being or doing SOMETHING that brings others joy is about. It’s about finding your own joy and BEING that light. Then we can shine it on others and THAT, my friends, is how we heal the world, one soul at a time. BE the light. Shine it bright. I wasn’t going to do flowers again, but I’m just so inspired by this season, which is normally already HOT in my neck of the woods, but has been undeniably beautiful… with blooms and buds all around. Having said that, I didn’t start this with any sort of plan. It just… bloomed. (Yes, my word for the year!) I started this just with the intention of “playing”… I thought I’d do something abstract. But after putting down a collage from vintage book papers, I saw a cool technique on creating hydrangeas (sorry—I didn’t jot down the artist’s name—if anyone knows, please share) so I had to try it. Again, I was just going to play. This has been a bit of a challenging week, after having such a high vibe kind of energy these last few weeks. I’ve had this idea in the back of my mind that maybe, just maybe, I subconsciously sabotaged my high vibes (because I WAS energetically soaring and maybe that was getting exhausting?) I don’t know, but I had a decadent weekend last week with food and drink (and I do need to avoid that kind of thing due to health reasons) so my energy has been kinda down this week. Spiritual author Kyle Gray writes about his experience in his book RAISE YOUR VIBRATION… when he was a teenager and he’d give a spiritual reading, he’d feel so high after that he’d crave to be grounded. So he’d eat junk food, which would bring him back to earth and make him feel yucky (note: he doesn’t do this nowadays). I’m pretty sure this is what I did last weekend. But I’m realizing it’s all part of the journey, so this all feels very appropriate… and goes so well with my blooming hydrangeas. Sometimes growing IS a struggle. Sometimes we aren’t quite ready for that internal high. But what would happen if I hadn’t pushed down my energy? How high could I have soared? Trust me, I aim to find out. Be the light. I’ve never been a flower person. I’ve always been able to appreciate them, but when I’ve received them as gifts, I’d always think to myself, “Well… NOW what do I do with these?” Something has changed in me because now I’m all about the flowers. I notice them on walks, in grocery stores… in art! I just want to bury my face in a beautiful bouquet when I see one… like a long lost love that I haven’t seen in forever. And they’ve been here all along. But I’ve been very aware of noticing ALL the “little” things that can bring joy each day. Finding a beautiful garden that’s blooming is just the beginning. Feeling a gentle, outdoor-scented breeze on your face through an open window. Capturing that magic moment when the sunlight hits the trees “just so.” Hearing a toddler’s throaty giggle. These are every day things, but these are also the things that make life SO worthwhile. I’ve been writing a lot about blooming, and my newfound love of flowers pairs so well with that. And when I serendipitously (there’s that word again) found a book that I didn’t even know I have, it confirmed that BLOOM is indeed my word of the month, if not the year. That book is ALL ALONG YOU WERE BLOOMING, by Morgan Harper Nichols. Lo and behold, when I opened the book, I “found” this poem staring up at me. I’ve attached it here for reference. It’s beautiful and so incredibly appropriate right now. I also need to note that there’s a quote on the wall at my yoga studio (that I selected two years ago) that now makes sense. I’m not sure why I picked it then as I was getting the space ready—I just thought it was cool—but when I went in today, it held new meaning for me. The last three of my 18 card draws for @IntentionARTCards… lots of synchronicity/serendipity/magic in both the creation and (almost) daily selection of intentions. And how utterly profound and appropriate that my very last card draw is HEALED… as that has been my biggest and most important intention since the very beginning. Not just healing for myself, but for everyone who needs it… in body, mind, and/or soul. I’m so grateful that I’ve been able to release these intentions into the world over the past few weeks. And I’m astounded at how abundance and just plain old “good luck” have been manifesting for me lately. Example: I was supposed to go to Florida yesterday for four days to visit a relative… had flights and a car rental arranged. On Saturday night, I started getting a horrible sore throat and body aches. Called my family member Sunday to postpone for a different week. Yesterday I found out that the flight I was going to be on was delayed for FOUR hours. That and it was probably my best creative day at home I’ve had since starting this art journaling journey in January. So not only did I miss a bunch of stress and angst waiting for hours at an airport… I also enjoyed an amazing day I wouldn’t have otherwise had! This is all thanks to my little bug/virus (that is now magically gone!) and the ever-present beautiful universe. Be the light. Shine it bright. Today I opened up my “practice” journal (as opposed to my REAL art journal, which is SUPPOSED to be for practice 😂). I opened up to a page with a background that I created weeks ago— from starfish imprints on a gel press. Let me repeat for emphasis (and for a point, which I’ll make in a bit)—this started with a “background.” While I was putting things (collage, paint) on top of this background, I was talking to a good friend who was giving me a lot of context (a.k.a background) about things that are going on in her life right now. As we were talking, and it was slowly getting revealed that she should get back to art-making (mind you, she didn’t realize that I was actually working on something at that very moment), I was beginning to realize that there was some serendipity happening here. Of course, this often happens in this process of creation, but when that idea first pops in your head, it doesn’t fully take hold until later. Later is NOW, and I realize that background was a key part of this story. It was important for this particular spread to take hold. It was important (not to mention revealing) to help my friend realize that maybe this act of creating can be healing for her like it has been for me. After I got off the phone, this quote literally jumped off the page at me. It wasn’t planned. I grabbed a stack of quotes that I have and there it was. And it is just so appropriate right now. Aaaaand to top it all off, the piece-de-resistance is that “background” is today’s #getmessymay prompt, which I’m participating in. I did not know this when I started working on this page, nor when I started talking to my friend. (And I do believe this message is for her!) It all started with BACKGROUND. First day with a new client today and feeling the jitters! Good jitters. We know where the trailhead begins but we’re not sure where it’s going to go and where it’s going to end. It’s a journey into the heart of their purpose. This particular client is “struggling to align [his] why with the job”… …so I asked… “What would your action be if it was aligned with your why?” And the response? “I don’t know…” Do you know that feeling? That lack of clarity, that leads to inaction? I do. And honestly, it’s not our fault. Nor my client’s fault. We’ve created a society that is constantly asking us to consume and produce. No wonder we’re just spending our days reacting to the daily demands put upon us. Still… When I lack clarity, I feel stuck. There’s this internal brace that’s happening in my body. Something is off… …and the way I cope is by adding things on my plate, …busyness is my reactive mechanism. So I was pondering this notion, thinking about that worn-out catchphrase, “Every day is a new beginning”… but is it, really? I think every day is an OPPORTUNITY to improve upon something that already exists— groundwork laid out for us to uncover, one layer at a time.
