I'd never grown a tulip before this year. Partly because my cat Noodle rips their heads off if I put them in a vase 😤😹, and partly because I'm never sure about growing annuals, which is kind of what tulips like this are. I decided to live life on the edge and give them a go. I ordered La Belle epoque from Sarah Raven, planted them in January (because I'm late for everything 😂) and they have not disappointed. They are probably only going to be in flower for a total of three weeks, and they weren't cheap, but I think I saved the best till first. And Noodle hasn't even noticed that they're tulips. I considered what I'd do next year. The cost, the effort, the waste. Would I be sad if I didn't have these in my garden next Spring? Really sad. Not a huge amount done this weekend but a lot of work has taken place. We jet washed the decking to get rid of all the old grime and stuff before adding the first coat 1 of decking stain. Very hot work out in this sun and a few breaks had to be taken! While the wife started staining the decking I started on sanding one of the chairs ready for painting until the battery died. It was tadpole feeding time and I love this photo of my son in the depths of the jungle 😂🌿. I went shopping, which is always dangerous. I decided that the garden really needed an acer so I went on a hunt. I got brilliant advice from @tahomaflora who recommended Aureum, Viridis and Seiryu and @georgialindsaygardendesign who thought a japonicum would be a bit more robust in my climate. Well the shop didn't have any of these but it did have this stunner 'orange dream' (in the foreground), which came home as an impulse buy 😬 A bit of reading on Google led me to discover that it is otherwise known as orange nightmare, and can be a bit particular about its needs but that's what impulse buys are all about 😂 The last acer I had was twenty years ago which sat in a huge pot outside my flat on a main road. In the middle of the night it was lifted and driven away leaving only a trail of compost out to the street. It was far too big to get in a car so someone had planned that particular theft fairly well. I figured it was just a tree, and somebody else really wanted it, so whatever. Gerry's cooking a light supper as we had a left over picnic lunch on a bench by the sea and I'm sat in my little garden with a storm broken arch to one side and old fence stuff- also storm broken- lying on the grass and catching my eye . Previously this would have bothered me but instead I'm just so happy with how the garden is starting to look - maybe it's because the sun has shone all day; maybe because Gerry strimmed the grass - but mainly because it is starting to take shape and I have a better sense of how I would like it to look. I feel like i'm beginning to find my way. I had a delicious zoom call this morning with my lovely friends Claire (of @chalcraftdesign ) and Ozge of @ekinbrandsocials . Ozge is helping both claire and i with some of the technical aspects of instagram and making videos ( which I need to learn for my business account) and our chat was about none of that and instead we just talked about shared life experiences and touched on the notion of things being perfect and of course what I'm thinking as I look at my garden is that it really is 'good enough' and ever so pretty in parts and that's just fine. I left that call so uplifted this morning. Laughter and tears. And so much common ground between us all. The pigeons finally got their way last year and finished off the lilac tree completely 😬. For years I'd watched them, powerless to stop them, as they stripped all the leaves off the stems. They weren't eating them as they dropped the leaf litter everywhere, and I read about it being a thing that they sometimes sit and do 😤 So down to the last branch and not salvageable I cut it down. I couldn't bear to part with all the trunks and like the garden hoarder that I am, I kept them, infuriating everyone 😂 I've just repurposed them all around the garden in with the flowers who are loving the new supports. The pigeons won but the lilac is even more beautiful than before. I’ve moved my citrus trees back outside. They sit on a sheltered table outside the kitchen door so I can see them. Although I keep them indoors over winter, I don’t think they like it, I could almost hear them sigh as they were returned to the outdoors! These are supermarket citrus trees, the oldest I’ve had for about five years, my lemon is two, and the baby orange is a recent purchase. I feed them every couple of weeks with a citrus feed, and they stand on a layer of gravel. They’re not perfect but they are surviving! Good god, it’s almost like we’ve got a proper garden! After last years #wtf am I doing with this and #pumpkin gate, I’ve dragged my sorry ass off the sofa and properly started the garden! We have pergolas, tiers, shrubs, trees!, alas no lawn as it’s been wrecked by the #douchehounds…… but in a few years time, I’m hoping it will start to look magnificent! Hopefully the slugs will sod off, a new lawn will be laid and nothing will die. Very pleased with the new coop from @flytesofancy ,it truly is sublime and the lovely new chickens from @chickenstoyourdoor have settled in a treat and started laying!!!! Every day when I walk the dogs I peek over the fence at this small collection of clematis outside someone's door. They are only small plants but they've been flowering for a few weeks now. I think the pastel shades look lovely together and they've inspired me to go for some lighter colours in the future. Setting out and planting the first phase of plants in this border I’ve designed for a client in Broxburn. She wanted something that worked with the existing colours of orange and purple, so I’ve added to the palette colours that harmonise with the existing ones. Structural plants, evergreen foliage, ground cover and year-round interest all designed in. This border is small but it is mighty in the punch it packs. Work in progress for this small courtyard and roof terrace in the heart of Chelsea. The courtyard is now feels like a sad shady L-shaped corridor, which I’m going to bring to life with as many lush textures and I can get in! The sound of water pulls us to the calming lounge hiding ahead. The terrace, on the contrary, is exposed to views and bathed with sunlight.
