I asked my oldest daughter, while I wrote them down on this note, "Have you ever thought about self-esteem being broken down like this? Into six categories?" "Not really," she answered, "but self-acceptance seems like the main thing with self-esteem. Like, knowing that you're okay with YOU seems really important because if you're okay with you, it's not such a big deal what other people think." "Totally! But look at these others... self-assertiveness, self-responsibility? THE LOOP It starts with a thought Something isn’t going well. There’s something I should do (but don’t want to or don’t know how) There’s a feeling of dread or shame or overwhelm You’re stuck. You see yourself stuck. It’s probably familiar. You don’t move forward. You distract yourself from the discomfort of it or you sink into the despair of it. You think and think and think and think about it. You lose sleep over it. You talk to friends and hear their thoughts. Round and round the loop it goes. You kinda solve it, or at least take a stand in your mind, but then shoot it down and start over again. How did I get here? How do I get out? Why did this happen? Why does this keep happening to me? I’m no good at this. This isn’t fair. This should not have happened. I can never... What’s the solution to the loop? Ask better questions. Your brain loves a scavenger hunt. When you ask your brain the same questions over and over, it gives you the same answers. It’s proud of itself! I know this answer!!!! It’s the same one I gave you last time, and the time before that, and the time before that. I’m good at this answer! (I’m no good at this. This isn’t fair. This should not have happened. I can never...) And THE LOOP rolls on. What can I learn to get better at this? What new solutions could I find to this problem? What is the best case scenario from where I stand right now? What skill would I use to try something I’ve never done before? What would I need to believe about myself in order to try it? THE LOOP is a sweet puppy that does the same thing over and over again because it thinks that is actually what the whole point of the game. The ball is thrown...bring it back.
