The Temptations- Cloud Nine The first Temptations song led by the late Dennis Edwards, after former lead David Ruffin was fired from the group. Producer Norman Whitfield and lyricist Barrett Strong would take the group from the smooth, clean cut soul music into what is now known as the Psychedelic Phase. Heavy electric guitars, wah-wah pedals, and background arrangements where each member sung different lines. It was big step for Whitfield and Strong as the trio songwriting-producers, Holland, Dozier, Holland, the most successful songwriting-producer team at Motown writing chart topping hits for The Supremes, Four Tops and Martha & The Vandellas, would leave Motown, suing over royalty payments. A veteran/survivor of James Brown World in the 60s, by the time of this 1975 album Yvonne Fair had landed at Motown and was being produced by Norman Whitfield for an album that seems to take a few pages (actually, a whole chapter) from what Betty Davis was doing at the time. She growls and shouts her way through hard-hitting Temptations and Rufus (“Tell Me Something Good”) covers as well as the killer “Let Your Hair Down”…among other tough, funky gems. Complete with attention-grabbing title and a cover that shows her suggestively brandishing a whip, one suspects a little more promotional attention from Motown might have paid serious dividends for Ms. Fair, who was NOT a woman to be messed with. On this album she sounds like the widow crying at the funeral of the no-good cheating husband she killed in the first place. The hard-edged soul on this record bears this out with an added funk-rock edge. The Pink Album is a 1967 album by American vocal group The Marvelettes, also their seventh LP. Recording for The Pink Album began in 1966. While Smokey Robinson handled much of the production, there is also production from James Dean and William Weatherspoon, who would provide material for #TheMarvelettes’ next album. Producers felt that the group needed to offer a sound more mature and developed that contrasted their previous recordings. This album contains only two singles: “The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game” (No.13 US, No. 2 R&B) which was written and produced by Robinson, and its follow-up, a remake of Ruby & the Romantics’ “When You’re Young and in Love” (No. 23 US, No. 9 R&B, No. 13 UK) which was the group’s only single to reach UK charts. Today in music history, marks the 51st anniversary of the Temptations classic 1973 album titled "Masterpiece!" Released on this day 51 years ago. "Masterpiece" is truly a masterpiece of a Temptations album, as it's another Norman Whitfield produced album with classic songs. The album featured past members Dennis Edwards, Richard Street, Damon Harris, Melvin Franklin, and Otis Williams. This album has three hit singles, as they are "Hey Girl (I Like Your Style)," which reached to #2 on US R&B chart. "Plastic Man" reached to #8 on the US R&B chart and #40 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Law Of The Land" was also a single but didn't make the charts in the US but in the UK, it reached to #41. And the title itself "Masterpiece" reached to #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #1 on the Billboard Hot Singles chart. The album peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. This album would be one of the last Norman Whitfield would write and produce for the Temptations, after fans referred to them as "The Norman Whitfield Chorale Singers." This would cause tension between Norman and the Tempts. After their "1990" album, which came out later that same year, the Tempts would unfortunately fire him as their main writer and producer, after 7 years of working together. Despite the criticism and conflicts, Norman went out with a bang! This album is another Temptations classic, as it was truly a masterpiece art with instruments constructed by Norman Whitfield.
