Happy 34th anniversary to "2300 Jackson Street" a 1989 single released by the Jacksons from their album of the same name. It is the only song on the album featuring Michael and Marlon Jackson, as they had left the group before further recording sessions. The song also features two of the Jackson sisters: Rebbie and Janet. "2300 Jackson Street" is about the Jackson family's childhood home on 2300 Jackson Street in Gary, Indiana. The music video was directed by Greg Gold and produced by Phil Rose. The video features most of the Jackson family members. La Toya is not featured in the music video nor the song, as she was estranged from the family at the time. Marlon, while he sang on the track, also did not appear in the video. Some scenes include the Jackson family playing pool and Jermaine, Tito, Randy and Jackie playing football. It also shows some members of the Jackson family singing the song together. The video was shot in March 1989 in Hayvenhurst, Encino, Los Angeles. Teddy's Jam was an early single by Guy. I love this track cos it's essentially a producer's showcase or DJ's jam. It demonstrates what a dope beatmaker Teddy Riley was giving the lead vocalists a bit of a rest. It's very catchy too... Teddy's Jam 2 had vocoders on too but tat was an LP only joint iirc. I gotta say, I have a spot for early Swing Beat/New Jack Swing for the use of breakbeats and some great voices. Teddy's Jam kind of bridges the gap between the NJS and the rap a bit closer. *SWIPE LEFT* Those of you following me are probably a little familiar with "New Jack Swing" as an R&B-subgenre and one of its key forerunners, Teddy Riley. By 1989, Riley was the go-to for the New Jack sound (you couldn't change your radio dial without hearing something that had his distinctive mark). So much so that his then-manager/"godfather" Gene Griffin forged what would become GR Productions in 1989. Not only did this label/production company house Teddy (who was only 21 at that time), but the talented likes of Zan "The Man" Aquart, Bernard Belle, and Markell Riley, amongst others. This empire was short-lived, however, and after Teddy finally caught on to Gene taking advantage of his publishing royalties, the label-production deal was terminated by 1990. Marsha McClurkin, 1989/1992. Harlem Be sure to follow our offshoot page @UrbanSoulSuite, that focuses on classic R&B history. Marsha McClurkin (related to Donnie McClurkin) was in a late 1980s R&B group called “Abstrac” which was supposed to be the female equivalent of GUY, and was also managed by Gene Griffin. Marsha and Teddy Riley was dating from 1988 to 1989. While they were dating, she once gave Teddy Riley one of her silver credit cards to use if he ever needed it. Teddy joked on the card because it wasn’t gold, but Marsha ensured that it would come in handy. Gene Griffin forbid any of his artists to date each other, so Marsha and Teddy had to pretend they were not together in front of Gene and publicly so Gene wouldn’t know, which would make it uncomfortable for Marsha whenever woman groupies would surround Teddy. They had a very great relationship, until they broke up after Teddy falsely accused her of stealing money from him. Skip to the end of beginning of 1990. Teddy Riley finally fires Gene Griffin as his manager. He tries to leave Atlanta to go back to New York, but realizes that Gene Griffin has blocked all his cards. He is now flat broke and stranded. He calls Marsha on the telephone, as he has nowhere else to turn to. Marsha reminds him of the silver card she gave him years ago, and Teddy rushes to get it out of one of his suitcases, and uses it to go back to Harlem, where it all started for him. The group “Abstrac” (third slide) wasn’t as successful as they were supposed to be, so Marsha and one of the other group members, Mary, formed a group by themselves called “M&M” (fourth slide) which came out in 1992. The album was very good and one of the more obscure underrated r&b albums of the 1990s but failed to be successful, with Marsha later quitting the music industry and settling down. She is still alive and well today. One day Teddy Riley and his mother were out trying to buy furniture. When Teddy tried to pay for it, he realized his card declined. He later called Gene Griffin asking what was up with his money, with Gene telling him whenever he wants to mKe a big purchase, to just let him know first so he can send over the needed amount. When Teddy tells his mother this, she tells him he needs to fire Gene. Griffin as his management. Teddy Riley was always a musician first. He was not a businessman. He did not know how much money he was losing out on, until Kemp Frank (one of Gene Griffin’s guys) finally laid it out to him about how much money Gene has versus how much money Teddy has. Frank told Teddy to just stick with him, but then Frank started to extort Teddy. Teddy Riley knew Rich Porter and Alpo from growing up in Harlem. They one day approached him. Alpo was offering to have Gene Griffin and Kemp Frank killed, but Teddy Riley refused the offer and told Alpo he was going to take the legal route to deal with it, which Alpo and Rich respected. Alpo later gave Teddy Riley’s brother a briefcase of money telling him he wants to invest in Teddy’s career to get his foot into the music business, but Teddy’s brother gave him the money back preferring him to give it to Teddy personally himself. Before Alpo could do that, he was arrested for 14 murders. Teddy later fires Gene Griffin in person. Anthony Bee (first pic: far left standing, and in second photo), Teddy Riley, Gene Griffin and a friend, 1989. Harlem New Edition vs. Guy Be sure to follow our offshoot page @UrbanSoulSuite, that focuses on classic R&B history. At the the 1989 Budweiser Superfest, New Edition and their crew, and Guy and their crew were at odds. It started out as friendly competition, but due to their entourages, it ended up being fatal. Allegedly at one of the shows, one of the New Edition entourage members sabotaged the sound of Guy’s set. In one of the cities, where Guy and New Edition agreed that Guy would close the show, New Edition and their entourage were late. Gene Griffin told Guy to go out and perform first, but when New Edition arrive, one of their entourage guys started setting the their stage up while Guy was still performing, which caused one of Guy’s goons to beat the guy up and send him backstage. New Edition comes out with Mike Bivins leading the charge, in the middle of Guy’s performance, telling Teddy Riley they need to talk. A few days later, at a tour stop in Pittburgh, Gene Griffin sends two goons to beat up Ronald Byrd, New Edition’s tour manager. They threaten him and give him warnings to not sabotage anymore Guy shows. Ronald Byrd, who isn’t a slouch, escapes and grabs a pistol nearby, where he starts chasing the men, gunning one of them down. The man he killed was Anthony Bee, Teddy Riley’s big homie who was talked about in previous posts and in the second photo. Teddy Riley is arriving at their hotel on a bus to the scene, when he sees a bunch of cop cars and news reporters. When Teddy Riley finds out the news later on, it sparks the beginning of a dark depression stage for him, as that one of the first of his many friends who ended up killed in a 2 year span. Ronald Byrd was sentenced to 5 to 10 years. Rest In Peace to Anthony Bee. By 1989, Teddy Riley was becoming a household name in R&B, producing songs for artists after artist, such as Keith Sweat, Johnny Kemp, Levert, Jonathan Butler, The Gyrlz, Big Daddy Kane, etc. He was making alot of money, but the money was under the control of Gene Griffin. “My Prerogative” Aaron Hall and Teddy Riley wrote My Prerogative, with only Teddy Riley producing it, and it allegedly was supposed to be a Guy song that was on the first album, but it was too late to submit the song by the last date of the album sessions. Teddy Riley ended up giving the song to Bobby Brown, with all parties knowing it was going to be a hit. Gene Griffin proceeded to give Aaron Hall upfront money for ownership it’s songwriting, making Aaron sign a contract giving up any future publishing of the song. Gene Griffin also took sole production credits for the song, which is why Teddy Riley is not credited for it. All the money that My Prerogative (one of the biggest songs of 1988/1989) bought in, went directly to Gene Griffin, and Teddy and Aaron saw no money. The songs Teddy Riley got credit for, always had Gene’s name next to it as a co producer, or Gene’s name as the songwriter, but Gene Griffin allegedly did not write anything and never produced anything. Gene Griffin was just their manager, making moves in the industry and using his muscle to get the group notoriety. Gene Griffin meets up with the newly formed Guy group, which is miles ahead of what Teddy’s prior group “Kids At Work” was. Gene humbly asks them to let him be their mouthpiece, getting their demo out there. To the group, Gene doesn’t seem to have the confidence he had before prison, as he seems desperate and meek. He shops the tape around, with everybody declining. Timmy later gets the tape to Tommy Boy Records, who offers them a $240K deal. The next day, Timmy comes back to Tommy Boy Records the next day, with Gene Griffin, who Timmy notices suddenly stopped being humble, and quickly shifted back to the confident gangster impresario he knew before prison. Gene hesitates on the $240K offer, claiming that it’s low. He takes the offer and goes back to all the labels that declined the group, hoping for a bidding war. He eventually takes the deal to Andre Harrell. Andre Harrell takes the group to the legendary Harlem restaurant Sylvia’s, to lay out the game plan. The game plan Andre had for them was to make Guy incorporate the drug dealing street swag of Harlem into the R&B brand. Gene wasn’t impressed with all that though. He wanted to talk money, and eventually negotiated up to a $500K deal for the group. To celebrate, Gene agrees to take the group out to a nice restaurant, but gives them all contracts to sign first. Teddy and Aaron signed the contracts, but Timmy was hesitant, not falling for the bait and switch trick. This was the beginning of Timmy’s exit out the group. Timmy Gatling, Teddy Riley, Clurel Henderson, and Gene Griffin, 1984. Harlem Be sure to follow our offshoot page @UrbanSoulSuite, that focuses on classic R&B history. Clurel Henderson @nycvocalcharmschool was the third member of Kids At Work, that Timmy Gatling recruited to be in the group with him and Teddy Riley. After Gene Griffin’s A&R discovers Teddy, he introduces him to Gene Griffin. Weeks later, Teddy calls Timmy and Clurell to come to Gene’s office, where Gene Griffin agrees to be their manager, making them sign contracts in the spot. At that point they were signed to CBS Records. Gene Griffin, whose fashion style was a priority, being that he was from Harlem, took the group shopping to up their fashion game for the stage. According to Teddy, him, Timmy and Clurell one time got jumped by some guys on the street because of how well they were dressed in comparison to everyone else surrounding them. At their first big show, they met Mike Bivins and Bobby Brown of New Edition, recalling how Mike Bivins had a fierce competitive mind even as a kid. They also met Andre Harrell who at the time was in the group Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Andre Harrell would be an integral part of their story later. Gene Griffin invested alot of money into Kids At Work, to the point where it was burning a hole in his pocket, which allegedly led to him putting in more work in the streets to cough up more cash. Unfortunately, Kids At Work’s run ended abruptly when Gene Griffin got incarcerated on drug trafficking charges. Gene Griffin, 1985. Be sure to follow our offshoot page @UrbanSoulSuite, that focuses on classic R&B history. 1980s Harlem. Gene Griffin was originally referred to as the original Suge Knight. He was the first manager of Guy, and Kids At Work, which was Teddy Riley and Timmy Gatling’s original group, which will be talked about in the next post. During the mid 1980s, he had one foot in the streets, and another one in the music industry. He ran sixteen Blocks in Harlem, most notably 116th to 110th street. He also had affiliations with the Italian mob. He ran a label called SOUND OF NEW YORK. In 1984, he was looking for young group of boys to sign that could be his own version of New Edition. Kids At Work caught his attention through one of Gene’s A&Rs who discovered Teddy Riley in Harlem, while Teddy Riley was doing his own spin of a Kool & The Gang song. Teddy Riley was once quoted saying that if they had never had Gene as their manager, that his career would have gone differently, in a good way. Feels so good to just get paid, and it’s Friday AND the weekend is here! It’s the perfect storm but is not a storm. In 1988, this fabulous being of a song came out on the late Johnny Kemp’s album, “Secrets Of Flying” and “Just Got Paid” was co-written by Johnny and the late Gene Griffin however it is said that Teddy Riley wrote it so there is a gray area regarding who really wrote this song besides Johnny. It shot to numero uno on the U.S. R&B Dance chart and NSYNC covered it on their mega album, “No Strings Attached”. I did not know that. Do you remember that sweet feeling on a Friday, though, when you were younger. It felt so good to cash that check then go and spend it at the store to get a cute outfit to go to the club that had a cover charge and the drink that gave you the most bang for your buck. Then the check was all gone by Friday at midnight but you lived at home so it was all good. Johnny Kemp brought these fabulous feelings to light. Keith Sweat was originally offered the song, he said, “No” so Johnny took it and spun it into a club classic. This single was nominated for a Grammy in 1989 but lost to Anita Baker’s, “Giving You The Best That I’ve Got”. Gosh, I loved her, too! Hopefully Johnny is flying high and can see that we are still loving his music. Happy Friday! xo
