Remembering Gene McFadden on the day of his birthday. He is best known as one of the key members of the Philadelphia International record label, and was one-half of the successful team of McFadden & Whitehead. As teenagers, Gene McFadden and John Whitehead met at school in Philly and formed a group called The Epsilons. The personnel included Allen Beatty, James Knight, and future Blue Notes member Lloyd Parks. When Otis Redding came to Philadelphia, The Epsilons were invited to become part of his revue. They toured with him during the late 1960s until Redding’s death in a plane crash in 1967. They signed a small record deal with Stax Records on the back of this opportunity and had a moderate success in 1970 with “The Echo”. Gene and John changed their name to Talk of the Town and worked with Gamble/Huff who groomed their talents on their North Bay label. Discovering their abilities for writing and producing, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff employed McFadden & Whitehead at their PIR label through the 1970s, collaborating with them at first on ‘I’ll Always Love My Mama’ for The Intruders. While at the label, their songs and/or productions were utilised by the O’Jays on their hit “Back Stabbers” in 1972 and Archie Bell & the Drells for hits “Let’s Groove”, “The Soul City Walk”, “Strategy” and “Don’t Let Love Get You Down”. McFadden and Whitehead also wrote songs such as “Bad Luck”, “Wake Up Everybody”, “Prayin’” and “Where Are All My Friends” for Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, as well as “The More I Get, The More I Want”, and “Cold, Cold World” for Teddy Pendergrass. McFadden and Whitehead formed together as a group officially under the name “McFadden & Whitehead” in 1977. The pinnacle of their success came in 1979 with dance floor anthem “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now”, from their eponymously named album, which went to No.1 on the R&B charts and sold eight million records worldwide and was nominated for a Grammy. What a way to kick off the 2024 gigs. Soul-jazz-junk-fusion-disco visionary @dexterwanselofficial bringing a set list beyond compare to @thejazzcafe in Camden. Those up on their history will know how integral Dexter has been to the evolution and synthesis of these sounds in the last quarter of the 20th-century and how he then provided endless grooves for hip-hop MCs to ride. ‘Theme From The Planets’ alone has been sampled by everyone from Eric B & Rakim to DJ Shadow to J Cole. He was musical director of MFSB for a couple of years (exhibit A ‘Mysteries of The World’ 😮) and a vital part of Philly International records in its heyday. Gamble & Huff liken his influence and legacy in music to the great Quincy Jones. As a keyboardist, composer and producer, so many of his tracks have this lushness that make you overflow with waves feeling, carrying you elsewhere, transcending time and space. His arrangements have consistently popped, even at their most sensual and laidback. Harnessing, coalescing the talents of those around him. The cosmos-obsessed musician had an incredible run of albums in the late 70s: Life On Mars (my intro), What The World Is Coming To, Time Is Slipping Away (featuring two-step classic ‘Sweetest Pain’) and Voyager (‘Solutions 👌🏾). The Jones Girls - Nights Over Egypt Michael Pedicin Jr. - You Gene McFadden and John Whitehead had written the lyrics to 'Back Stabbers' when they first approached Gamble and Huff, and they were soon hired as songwriters and later started producing as well. Together with Bunny Sigler and Dexter Wansel, among many others, McFadden and Whitehead played a key role behind the scenes at PIR and wrote lots of hit records, but they really wanted to sing and, after a very long time, they were finally allowed to make their own record 'Ain't No Stopping Us Now' released in 1979. The lead single sold over two millions copies and is a declaration of independence from what they felt was keeping them down, namely the label.

Du tube interplanétaire "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" (avec cette ligne de basse généreusement samplée), aux clins d'oeil aguicheurs, adressés au soulman Bobby Womack ("Got To Change") mais aussi au grand Larry Graham (que ce soit dans la manière de chanter ou le jeu de basse de James Williams sur les brûlots que sont "Mr. Music" et "Just Wanna Love You Baby"), le duo formé par McFadden & Whitehead est au sommet de son art en cette année 79. Sûr, la machine Philadelphia International Records est tout de suite incriminée dans cette profusion de cordes menée par l'inimitable Don Renaldo, dont certains arrangements rappellent par moments les éternels rivaux qu'étaient Stax ou Motown.
