The O’Jays- I Want You Here With Me One of Philadelphia International’s first legitimate stars. The trio from Canton, Ohio became one of Philadelphia soul’s most popular singing groups. Smooth harmonies, backed by elaborate arrangements from the Gamble and Huff Orchestra, up-tempo tunes for shaking ya ass, those steamy love ballads such as this tune, and of course the politically social-conscious message songs. Numerous Gold and Platinum singles and albums. The guys from Ohio, take a trip to the city of brotherly love and are introduced to the world. The Jacksons- Blues Away Epic Records celebrated the major coup of signing Michael and his brothers away from the label (Motown) that made them superstars by producing a special label with both Epic and Philadelphia International Records logos together. One of the sticky points of getting out of the contract was the brothers wanted the opportunity to write songs in which Motown refused, so Epic sent the brothers to Philadelphia to work with the original OG’s, that hot producing duo Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff, who agreed to grant the brothers the opportunity. I’m pretty sure that Michael wrote this tune, or did Marlon? The label says M. Jackson. Taken from the self-titled platinum album. The groove laid down by the orchestra for hire, MFSB, is infectious! The Intruders-I Wanna Know Your Name In an interview given by one of the group members, the late Eugene Daughtry, the group got its name because of members unruly behavior and a reputation for crashing house parties. They achieved success by becoming the first mouthpieces for the up-and-coming duo songwriters and producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Beautiful groove tune arranged by the late MFSB guitarist, arranger, producer, Norman “The Harris Machine” Harris RIP Eugene Daughtry, Sam Brown, Robert Edwards, Norman Harris #theintruders #sambrown #philterry #eugenedaughtry #robertedwards #robertferguson #kennethgamble #leonhuff #normanharris #mfsb #gamblerecords #philadelphiainternationalrecords

Teddy Pendergrass- You Can’t Hide From Yourself The late singer with the sensual baritone voice debut album would prove staying power after leaving Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes for a shot at a solo career. Gamble and Huff and their team of songwriters would specifically craft tunes for the singer after noticing strong reactions from female fans. So much so that the singer performed concerts designated “For Ladies Only”. Those concerts wasn’t done as a joke”, Pendergass said in an interview with Billboard magazine. “That was a very serious approach to doing concerts. I wasn’t there to play. I was there to make sure that I locked into my audience, my female audience, and give them a show they’ll never forget without having to go to extremes.” RIP Teddy Pendergrass, Bobby Martin #teddypendergrass #kennethgamble #leonhuff #bobbymartin #mfsb #philadelphiainternationalrecords

795. The Intruders - "A Book for the Broken Hearted" promo 45, 1966. Sometimes it's really easy to get groups & songs mixed up with one another & that is the case with me, the Intruders & "A Book for the Broken Hearted" today. I'm the idiot who confused the Intruders with the Impressions & somehow thought that "A Book for the Broken Hearted" was "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" by Jimmy Ruffin, but it's not like I'm an expert on any of this stuff anyway. Now that I know who & what I am listening to, I can go ahead & say that Philadelphia soul might not be where it is today without the Intruders being such a success for the songwriting team of Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff in the mid-1960s. Some might point at the O'Jays or Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes as bigger representatives of the Sound of Philadelphia, but Gamble & Huff themselves acknowledge that the Intruders laid the foundation & made it possible for Columbia Records to fund the Philadelphia International label. I don't think "A Book for the Broken Hearted" was one of the bigger hits for the Intruders or even one of their better songs compared to "Cowboys to Girls" or "I'll Always Love My Mama," but it is fine for the moment. Maybe it is not as majestic & pop-infused as your typical Motown single or as funky as what you'll hear from Stax Records, but "A Book for the Broken Hearted" is a decent song that I suppose is as much a part of the Philly sound as anything emanating from the City of Brotherly Love at the time. Like I already said, I'm no expert on these records & am learning as I listen to them—it's not like I can tell the difference between a record from Philly & another from some other region of these United States. All I ever really know for sure is whether or not I like a particular song & I like "A Book for the Broken Hearted" enough right now. Good times.

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes- Wake Up Everybody The songwriting team of McFadden, Whitehead, & Carstarphen were called upon again to contribute another tune for the group’s next release a year later with the theme of social consciousness front and center. “The first thing we wrote for them was “Bad Luck”, the late John Whitehead tells Billboard magazine. We wrote that while Richard Nixon was President of the United States. It felt like since he was the president, the poorer people, the underprivileged, minority people were catching a bad break. It was worse than the Reagan era to us at the time, so l felt compelled to write something that had to do with social consciousness. Whitehead continues to explain after hearing the complete version of the over seven minute tune. “This song says so much, but I don’t know if people are gonna like it because it’s not a danceable tune...it starts out and builds at the end, you feel like you in church. I think that is one of the key points that attracted black people to this song, because of the spiritual vibe.” The tune held the number one spot on Billboard’s R&B chart for two weeks in the beginning of the country’s bicentennial year, 1976. This is an vinyl release of the Goin’ Places album by The Jacksons, released by Epic Records and Philadelphia International Records as a joint venture on October 18, 1977 with this particular vinyl having been released in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 Personally in my opinion this is a great follow-up group album for the Jacksons after their first album after leaving Motown 😁 This album compacts so much enjoyment as you can clearly hear all the Jackson brothers having fun singing these songs along with the songs itself having important meaning like Man Of War is essentially in my opinion a great Humanitarian song about 8 years before We Are The World was made ☮️ The only negative thing about this album is the same as the previous album about that according to Gamble and Huff who produced this album they had to rush this album to release it which didn’t provide them with enough time to bring the best out of The Jacksons according to them so who knows how much better this album would have been with more time, but still despite this then been a rushed album then still it’s a thousand times better than some albums released nowadays which had years to be developed unlike this album 😕 Fun fact: the song Different Kind Of Lady from this album which was written by all of the Jackson brothers together was such a big disco hit that it gave the Jackson brothers the confidence to fully write and produce their next album fully themselves with that album ultimately becoming the Destiny album in 1978 which was (with the exclusion of the song Blame It On The Boogie which wasn’t written by The Jacksons) fully produced and written by the Jackson brothers 😁 My favorite song from this album is Find Me A Girl 💃🔎 What do you think of this 2nd main group album by The Jacksons, let me know in the comments 💜 #michaeljackson #mjcollection #michaeljacksoncollection #michaeljacksonvinyl #mjvinyl #thejacksons #jacksons #jacksonsvinyl #thejacksonsalbum #goinplaces #secondalbum #2ndalbum #1977 #vinyl #unitedkingdom #uk #epicrecords #PhiladelphiaInternationalRecords #album #groupalbum #creativecontrol

Stepping into Dexter Wansel's sci-fi funk. That's all. (Addendum: Dexter Wansel was a major figure in the Philly soul scene of the '70s and '80s, helming classics for many under the Philadelphia International banner, from The O'Jays to The Jacksons. An in-house arranger, keyboardist, and songwriter, Wansel swerved from the radio-friendly, orchestrated soul that defined Philadelphia International and stepped into prog-soul and jazz-funk on his space-themed 1976 debut, Life on Mars. Heavy on layered cosmic synthesizer work with spacy, improvisational grooves, there's several highlights on this classic: "Together Again" is a prime quiet storm-styled ballad, while "A Phophet Named K.G." wouldn't sound out of place on a Billy Cobham album. The moody "One Million Miles From the Ground" is a profoundly spiritual ode on loneliness, while disco-imbued jazz-funk instrumentals, "Stargazer" and the immortal title track, "Life on Mars" sport tasty grooves. Can't overstate what's already been said about this beloved and much-sampled staple.)

This is an vinyl release of the The Jacksons album by The Jacksons, released by Epic Records and Philadelphia International Records as a joint venture in a unknown year for this vinyl version with it been between 1978 and 1991 with this particular vinyl having been released in Europe 🇪🇺 Personally in my opinion this is a great 1st group album for the Jacksons after their Motown career with them sounding much more enthusiastic and energetic when comparing this album to their J5 output at that time 😁 This album for me is a great reinvention of the Jacksons group as a musical force to be reckoned with in the music world back in 1976 when this album originally released in my opinion 😌 The only negative thing about this album is that according to Gamble and Huff who produced this album they had to rush this album to release it which didn’t provide them with enough time to bring the best out of The Jacksons according to them so who knows how much better this album would have been with more time, but still despite this then been a rushed album then still it’s a thousand times better than some albums released nowadays which had years to be developed unlike this album 😕 Fun fact: This album contains the first ever song that Michael wrote to appear on a album due to Motown not allowing the Jackson family to put their own material on the albums previously, so with the song Blues Away it finally happened that Michael could begin to show his talents as a songwriter 📝 My favorite song from this album is Enjoy Yourself 💃🕺 What do you think of this 1st main group album by The Jacksons, let me know in the comments 💜 #michaeljackson #mjcollection #michaeljacksoncollection #michaeljacksonvinyl #mjvinyl #thejacksons #jacksons #jacksonsvinyl #thejacksonsalbum #1stalbum #firstalbum #1976 #1978 #1991 #vinyl #holland #netherlands #epicrecords #PhiladelphiaInternationalRecords #album #groupalbum #debutalbum #debut #reinvention Thanks to @thomas.fritz.3152 for the information about where this particular vinyl was released 💜

The O’Jays- For the Love of Money The iconic tune composed by two of the originators of the Philadelphia sound, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, sharing a co-writing credit with legendary bassist Anthony Jackson showing off his standout bass chops all over this tune. A top ten hit, setting up shop in the top ten on both Billboard R&B and pop charts, the tune’s central theme about accumulating large stacks of dead presidents and the dangerous repercussions that can come with it. With the chorus of “Money, money, money, money,” the classic tune has been used in many promos, TV shows and movies where greed or the pursuit of the almighty dollar are concerned. Lifted from the trio’s masterpiece, “Ship Ahoy”, an album many considered the greatest album ever released from the Philadelphia International catalog. Happy Birthday to the incomparable Leon Huff! Leon is a legendary songwriter, record producer, and pianist, best known as one half of the influential songwriting and production duo Gamble & Huff, which include Kenneth Gamble as the other half. Gamble & Huff developed a distinctive sound, which became known as the “Philadelphia Sound.” This helped define the R&B and soul music of the 1970s and influenced countless artists and producers. They produced numerous chart-topping hits for artists signed to their co-founded Philadelphia International Records, including The O’Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, and Patti LaBelle, among others. Songs like “Love Train,” “If You Don’t Know Me by Now,” and “Me and Mrs. Jones” remain classics to this day. Their music also addressed social and political issues of the time, reflecting the Civil Rights movement and urban life. They have received numerous awards and honors for their contributions to music, including induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame. Their legacy is still influential today. Silk- I Can’t Stop (Turning You On) Once the contract with Atlantic Records expired, it was a no-brainer for the late Joseph B. Jefferson and his producing partner Charles Simmons to bring the group over to Philadelphia International. Upon release of this lone album, the group did its third name change from Anglo Saxon-Brown to Silk. The group’s lone PIR release, black radio embraced this lead-off single back in 1979. Once the group broke up and went their separate ways, the female lead singer would continue on singing background vocals on the group ConFunkShun’s 1980’s “Touch” album release. She also came to the attention of singer Jerry Butler as well. RIP Joseph B.
