Motown legend Smokey Robinson’s debut solo offering Smokey (blue limited edition) and Four Tops’ Still Waters Run Deep will be available in stores and online, pressed on 140g vinyl! Both albums represent a transitional period for each artist with Smokey coming shortly after Robinson parted ways with the Miracles in 1972 and embarked on a solo career, working with esteemed Motown producer Willie Hutch. Still Waters Run Deep see the Four Tops working alongside acclaimed producer Frank Wilson, maintaining their Motown sensibilities on tracks like ‘L.A (My Town)’ and ‘Still Water (Love)’ (co-written by Smokey Robinson) with plenty of tambourine. The Temptations- Cloud Nine The first Temptations song led by the late Dennis Edwards, after former lead David Ruffin was fired from the group. Producer Norman Whitfield and lyricist Barrett Strong would take the group from the smooth, clean cut soul music into what is now known as the Psychedelic Phase. Heavy electric guitars, wah-wah pedals, and background arrangements where each member sung different lines. It was big step for Whitfield and Strong as the trio songwriting-producers, Holland, Dozier, Holland, the most successful songwriting-producer team at Motown writing chart topping hits for The Supremes, Four Tops and Martha & The Vandellas, would leave Motown, suing over royalty payments. This is a 1972 US stereo pressing on the Gordy record label Allison was really the only blues artist on the Motown label Gordy. Teena Marie- Where’s California Them SANGIN’ Waters sisters (Maxine & Julia) backup Lady T on this album cut along with Pattie Brooks from this 1981 release which was her last for Motown. Once the dust settled after suing Motown Records over the release from her contract and the lack of payment of royalties, the vanilla child would have a law passed by congress nicknamed after her, and the songs of love and heartbreak continued as she signed with Epic Records two years later.
