Day 14 of the #mayvinylchallenge by @jennn_erator is ‘long time no spin/ random pull’. Well, the Discogs random button led me to the Four Tops’ 1967 LP, ‘Reach Out’, and indeed, it’s been a good few years since this well-worn LP has been for a spin. What an album, though! The Tops really could do no wrong in this era, with Holland, Dozier and Holland writing classic after classic, and supplying great arrangements of other contemporary material, such as the superb version of Tim Hardin’s ‘If I Was a Carpenter’, included here (my favourite recording of that much-covered tune). There are some great ensemble performances, with the Tops’ voices blending beautifully with those of session backup group, The Andantes, as on their interpretation of The Association’s ‘Cherish’. However, Levi Stubb’s soul-stirring baritone inevitably steals the show, roaring through stone-cold classics like the title track and the wonderfully melodramatic ‘7 Rooms of Gloom’, and even lending unexpected gravitas to The Monkees’ ‘I’m a Believer’. But more importantly his humble soul music helped balance the Moody Blues, and the Pinder/Hayward collaborations were always the strongest. Not many know Mike was the writer and producer (with Clarke) of the Four Tops hit “Simple Game” in 1972. His association with Motown continues thereafter. The weeks, nay months he spent perfecting the Moodies deeply captivating tonal language… defies belief. ON THIS DATE (59 YEARS AGO) April 23, 1965 – Four Tops: "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" b/w “Sad Souvenirs” (Motown M-1076) 45 single is released in the US. "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" is a 1965 hit song recorded by the Four Tops for the Motown label. It reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #1 on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart. The melody of this song is very similar to "Where Did Our Love Go," which Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote for The Supremes. According to Lamont Dozier, the title came about because he couldn't help himself from working with the same tune. Levi Stubbs, the lead singer of The Four Tops, delivers a passionate and soulful vocal performance in the song, which features backing vocals from both the other Tops and the female group The Andantes. The lyrics express the singer's vulnerability and devotion to his love interest, and the catchy melody and upbeat rhythm make it classic Motown. Lamont Dozier told the story behind this song in a behind-the-scenes video for his 2018 Reimagination album: "I stayed with my grandmother when I was a kid. She owned her own home beauty shop, and when the women would come up the walkway to get their hair done, my grandfather would be pedaling around in the garden. He was a bit of a flirt, and would say, 'How you doin', sugar pie? Good morning, honey bunch.' He was one of those types of guys. My grandmother had a big bay window to the front of the house. She'd say, 'Look at that old codger - he thinks I don't see. I know what he's doing.' He was just flirting with his big smile. I'm sitting there on the porch watching this - I'm probably 11 or 12. I was like a sponge, soaking it up. Years later, at Motown, I'm sitting at the piano. I'd take these mind trips back to my childhood, and I'm trying to see what this piano part is telling me. Sure enough, there my grandfather is, pedaling in the garden. That memory comes to my mind's eye, and I know where the song is supposed to go. I hear him saying, 'Good morning, sugar pie. Introducing, “Reach Out”- 12”x16”. It is the latest in a series of mixed media drawings where I am using previous reference photos and juxtaposing them both symmetrically but also layering them above each other to create almost a visual landscape. These drawings came about from a quick vision I had of a vertical drawing that had a symmetry to it. You never know when inspiration will strike!! The drawings are created on toned Strathmore paper. 1st I did a rough drawing in pencil, brushed on cold press ground in the areas I’d like to have color, allowed that to dry and painted those areas with watercolor, then did my pen and ink drawing, highlighting it with white gel pens over the entirety. Then I went back into the drawing with colored pencils or gel pens (just a touch!) to draw out certain areas.
