It wouldn’t be fair to my husband to visit all the bookstores, vintage shops, thrift stores, etc. that I would want to while on vacation. I would spend many hours browsing, and then there’s the issue of getting books home, they’re heavy. If one happens to be in our path though, when we’re already out exploring other things, then it’s fair game. I visited just one thrift store while on a recent trip. They had only one tiny rounder of books of which maybe five were children’s, but this beauty was one of them. A tin frog is in love with the beautiful lady in the picture inside the lid of the cigar box in which he dwells. A tin horseman longs to be with the yellow-haired princess he can see inside of the castle printed on a card that hangs by the window. A toy crocodile desires to have his poetry published in the literary quarterly edited by the mouse who lives inside a hole in the skirting board. All find the courage to go after their dreams just between midnight and the twelve strokes of the clock. This little book is, in my opinion, a real treasure. I've had the original, larger edition since before I could read, and it's been a firm favourite all these years. Not only does it have the delightful and dramatic story of the adventures of Ezekiel and Raphael Dubb- two tiger brothers, swept up by their wanderlust, but Nicola Bayley's illustrations are singularly ✨stunning✨ I have spent hours of my life delighting in these images that really go above and beyond your regular children's illustrations (my book naturally opens on the volcano page because, honestly, how did she make the lava glow like that‽). After the first two lines I knew that this piece of holorime was going to be about my favourite children's book 'The Mousehole Cat' (see slides 2 to 4). I must have read it dozens of time to my three kids and I shed a tear every time. Spoiler alert. The Cornish fishing village of Mousehole (pronounced locally as Mowzel) is named in honour of the narrowness of the entrance to its harbour. Every December 23rd the residents of Mousehole (Mowsel) celebrate the folk festival of Tom Bawcock's Eve in honour of the eponymous folk-legend fisherman who saved the town from famine by putting his boat out to sea to bring home a catch of fish in a severe storm. They carry lanterns and make stargazey pie (a frankly unappetising looking dish; a fish, egg and potato pie whose USP is that the fish heads are left on and protrude up through the pastry crust to "stargaze"). In Antonia Barber's 1990 book beautifully illustrated by Nicola Bayley old Tom is a widower whose children have all grown up and moved away and who shares his fisherman's cottage with just his old cat Mowzer. After weeks of terrible storms that have prevented the fishing fleet from putting out to sea, the people of the village are starving and Tom decides that because he is old and alone he is therefore expendable, and will attempt to take his boat out one night. His old cat Mowzer joins him. Their boat is thrown about by the terrifying Strom Cat and all looks lost until Mowzer begins to "sing" and her voice soothes and calms the storm cat. Zebrina e la coperta a toppe era il mio libro preferito ed è il libro preferito di Chiara. Il fatto che la nonna glielo leggesse ha ovviamente il suo peso, ma rileggendolo con lei per l’ennesima volta capisco, ancora una volta di più, perché nonna, nella giornata dei nonni, manca così tanto. Zebrina è una gatta di casa alla quale la padrona butta la coperta, troppo vecchia e troppo sporca. Lei, nel cercare di recuperarla nel bidone della spazzatura finisce nel camion che la porta in una discarica. E’ persa, e le illustrazioni del libro descrivono ancor meglio delle parole questo senso di perdita dei punti di riferimento, la paura. Ma poi Zebrina sente la voce che ama più di tutte, quella del lattaio che porta il latte a casa tutte le mattine. Il lattaio la trova e le dice: “Che cosa fa qui Zebrina lontana da casa e persa?”. Ecco, quando mia madre se n’è andata, quello che abbiamo perso. Abbiamo perso quella persona che ci prendeva per mano, quando ci sentivamo persi, e ci riportava a casa. Quella persona che sapeva che ci si poteva perdere, e lo capiva. E tu capisci quanto è importante saper riconoscere di essersi persi per poi ritrovare, spesso soli, la strada di casa, e quanto è importante, per chi ha bisogno di essere accompagnato in questo cammino, poter essere quella persona che ti prende per mano. Today for #saturdaycaturday, one of my all time favourite children's books, The Patchwork Cat. A story about Tabby, who loves her patchwork quilt and goes on an adventure to try and get it back when it is thrown away. It's a lovely tale, and my sister and I both adored it as children. I picked up this anniversary edition of The Mousehole Cat by Antonia Barber with stunning illustrations by Nicola Bayley when we were down in Cornwall recently. I've always borrowed it from the library but decided it was time to invest in our own, because I just love Nicola Bayley's pictures of the storm cat toying with Old Tom and Mowser's boat as if it was a mouse. The cat's eye retelling of the legend of Tom Bawcock is a must read if you're taking children to Mousehole.
