This past Mother’s Day, I created a fully handmade illustrated children’s book for my mom. This was my first time creating a hardcover saddle-stitched book, and I am so proud of the result!! My mom is the most nurturing, supportive, adventurous soul I know. She has spent much of her life teaching us to be kind to others and our Planet, so I thought it was fitting to create a book with this theme. “Love Your Mother” is a heartwarming children’s book that celebrates the love we have for our own mothers while also teaching the importance of cherishing and protecting Mother Nature and all her creatures. Young readers are taken on a journey around the world to meet maternal animals like elephants, whales, and bears, highlighting their nurturing qualities and the special bonds they share with their offspring. This story not only fosters a deep appreciation for our own moms but also instills a sense of responsibility and compassion towards the natural world, encouraging children to be stewards of the environment and to treat all living beings with kindness and respect. ‘We’re creative engineers, designing shuttles that can fly’ this was one of the first spread compositions I did for A Steminist Force, and the character with the yellow stripey trousers was one of the very first drawings I did when I started on this book! 💚Happy Friday everyone!💚 Turtle Moon is pretty much completed so I am in that inbetween phase… I’m not quite ready to start book 5 yet so am instead trying to refill the creative tanks. I’m reading, doodling, daydreaming & resting. I find if I try & search for ideas, they’re like wispy elusive clouds that forever escape me. So instead I do my best to sit patiently & wait for the ideas to come to me. It’s in this space that quite often completely unrelated projects pop in too! So yesterday I was playing about with a picture book idea that came to me on a walk very randomly! I think the playfulness side of any form of creativity is so important! It’s something I often need to remind myself of as my head constantly tries to push ahead in “work” mode whereas if we stop & listen, there’s so much goodness just waiting to enter. 🐢🐢In practical news, my September/October promotional tour for Turtle Moon is being shaped up & I’ll share when I have concrete dates. 🐢🐢There are a couple more snazzy special editions to reveal very soon! 🐢🐢 And don’t forget you can already pre-order a signed & dedicated exclusive copy from @wonderlandbookshop - it comes with the fancy sprayed edges! #ParvDiaries Parv: Mumma, How many pages can you read in an hour? Me: About 35-40. Why? Parv: Can you try reading 68? Me: That’s a little more for me but I can try. Why though? I started writing this book at the start of the school holidays - the windows were open and I could hear the kids laughing and playing outside. A Steminist Forces comes out in the UK TOMORROW! 🙌 One of the things I had most fun with on this book was the cover. The internals of the book are a celebration of jobs in STEM, so I wanted to make the cover feel busy and exciting to reflect that, and I wanted to have the illustration wrap all around the front and back to make it feel like the celebration has already started before you even open the book! Here’s some of my first super rough sketches, some ideas that I sent to the publisher, and then the final cover - and the title page, because one cover idea turned into that!

When we chose Italy as this year’s vacation destination, I knew I had to get a picture to replace the header photo on my ‘Pinocchio’ “Illustrator Explore”, because right now there is a comparatively sad one with illustrated ‘Pinocchio’s’ gathered at the base of a tree stump. I’ll post to stories once we are back home and its updated, but for now I wanted to show you guys this photo I took from Piazzale Michaelangelo. My son and I are also rereading ‘Pinocchio’ and its as much of a hit now as it was then. Then, we used the MinaLima version, now, we are reading this sprightly, colorful, an-illustration-on-every-other-page, version by Fulvio Testa, published by @NYRB Childrens. We are currently in a farmhouse cottage between Florence and Venice. A very loud woodpecker woke us this morning, and we had to exit a scorpion from the kitchen floor yesterday. Love it!
