The article of this month of May, published by Ocula Magazine, explores the dual roles of @ibrahimmahama3 as an artist and a curator, highlighting his significant contributions to the 35th Ljubljana Biennale and the vibrant art scene in Ghana. As an artist, Mahama is celebrated for his innovative use of materials such as jute sacks, notably in wrapping the Torwache gatehouses and covering a former shopping mall. His acclaimed installation ‘Purple Hibiscus’, originally commissioned for the Barbican, showcases handwoven and embroidered fabrics from Tamale, Ghana. His work also includes the two-channel video installation ‘Exchange Exchanger’, which thoughtfully captures the lifecycle of these materials. As a curator, Mahama showcased his visionary approach at the 35th Ljubljana Biennale, where he successfully integrated Ghanaian artistic traditions with global narratives. Beginning his career in architecture in Ghana, Mahama has covered significant cultural landmarks like KNUST’s Unity Hall and historical grain silos. He continues to honor Nkrumah’s legacy through cultural spaces like SCCA and @‌redclay_studio, emphasizing historical connections and contemporary relevance. Ibrahim Mahama’s ‘Purple Hibiscus’ wrapping the facade of @barbicancentre - Absolutely visually stunning against today’s big blue sky and the extraordinary amount of craftsmanship is so apparent, with even the robes of Ghanaian kings woven in. Have you seen Ibrahim Mahama's installation at the Barbican's Lakeside Terrace? Purple Hibiscus has been created in collaboration with hundreds of craftspeople from Tamale in Ghana where the colossal panels of pink and purple fabric have been woven and sewn by hand, to be fitted to the brutalist planes of our building. Approximately 2000 sq metres of bespoken woven cloth. 100 ‘batakaris' – robes worn by Ghanaian kings – are embroidered onto the artwork. Often saved by families over generations, these precious textiles carry the imprints of the figures they once clothed, signifying the continued relevance of intergenerational knowledge. Ibrahim Mahama holds a deep interest in the life cycles of textiles and what can be learnt from the historical memories embedded within them. On display until Sunday 18 August 2024. Friends and art lovers in HANNOVER, BRAUCHWEIG,GOSLAR, and surrounds… Tomorrow, Sunday 5th, I’ll be in conversation with the brilliant @ibrahimmahama3 at the occasion of his exhibition opening at @moenchehausmuseum. WOZANI! COME IN NUMBERS! #Repost @reiter_galleries with @use.repost ・・・ The Moenchehaus Museum Goslar will open 𝗜𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗵𝗶𝗺 𝗠𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗮’𝘀 solo exhibition “Rubber Soul” on Sunday, 05 May at 11.30 a.m. In his work, Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama (born 1987 in Tamale) examines the relationship between labour and capital, focusing on the exploitative mechanisms of global trade. Mahama became internationally recognised through his building coverings at the 2015 Venice Biennale and documenta 2017 with sewn-together jute sacks. For Mahama, the used and tattered transport sacks symbolise global capitalist economies. In Ghana, they are used to pack and ship cocoa and coffee, rice and beans. Mahama always acquires the materials for his installations by bartering. His choice of material is constantly linked to the history of production, trade and transport. The structures of global inequality are just as present in Mahama’s works as the cycles of recycling and repair. The exhibition will be opened by Dr Bettina Ruhrberg, Director of the Moenchehaus Museum and Timo Brucherseifer, Head of office at Jakobikirchhof of Sparkasse Hildesheim Goslar Peine with an introduction. Followed by a talk with Professor donna Kukama and Ibrahim Mahama in Ghana. Barbican Centre, 1982 & 2024 1982 picture by Todd Jacobson The Barbican Centre is an arts centre which includes a concert hall, theatre, library and art gallery. It opened in 1982 and is part of the Barbican Estate on the edge of the City of London. The area was almost completely destroyed by bombs during World War II and was rebuilt in a brutalist style. The textile covering on the building in the 2024 pictures is the artwork Purple Hibiscus by Ibrahim Mahama. @ibrahimmahama3 @barbicancentre #PurpleHibiscus #IbrahimMahama #BarbicanCentre #TheBarbican #Barbican #CityOfLondon #CorporationOfLondon #London #CentralLondon #Artwork #ArtsCentre #ThenAndNowCityOfLondon #ThenAndNowBarbican #Textiles #BarbicanEstate #Redevelopment #Brutalism #lbrutalistarchitecture

As part of the Ahaspora Professional Network Round Table Series, he had a one-on-one conversation with the Founder of @ahaspora @christabelsteel Invited members of the diaspora were in attendance while others joined by Zoom from around the world. It was a fruitful conversation that focused on his growth as an artist from Ghana and how others can be inspired to do the same. He understands his role having worked in the diaspora as an artist and choosing to invest in Ghana's creative arts sector. "We have a problem of...A gap of imagination," Ibrahim Mahama said when speaking on the importance of giving youth the power of imagination in order to inspire & grow their knowledge. "We need more people with artistic sensibilities." This artistic textile display spoke joy to me especially in this cooler weather of late! Here at the Barbican Centre overlooking the lake is the work of artist Ibrahim Mahama. Draped over the Barbican Centre are over 2000 sq. colossal panels sewn by the hands of craftspeople from Tamele. They too have hand embroidered more than 130 batakaris. They are African Fugu in local Ghanaian language, also known as Smocks. This colossal piece is wonderfully titled Purple Hibiscus. Artist Ibrahim Mahama's creation, Purple Hibiscus, covers an impressive area of 2,000 square meters and is intricately hand-embroidered with over 130 batakaris. These ropes, traditionally worn by Ghanaian royalty, hold significant value and are often passed down through generations within families. We look forward to welcoming Ibrahim Mahama to Fruitmarket this July. Songs about Roses will be the first-ever solo exhibition in Scotland of the work of Ibrahim Mahama; an artist critically acclaimed for his evocative large-scale, site-specific installations that speak to the cultural and social effects of post-colonialism and global migration. Born in Tamale in 1987, Mahama burst onto the international art scene at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015 with Out of Bounds, a work that clad the massive outside wall of the Arsenale in jute sacks to make a visually spectacular and thought-provoking installation. This work set the tone for what has become Mahama’s on-going investigation into the life of materials and their dynamic potential – the jute sacks telling a visual history of the narratives of production and trade, and the more human tales embodied within. Mahama’s installation Purple Hibiscus is currently transforming the outside of London’s Barbican Centre. Comprising 2,000 square metres of striped magenta fabric, made by weavers and seamstresses in Tamale, and incorporating traditional Ghanaian robes called batakaris, this monumental work speaks of labour, production, and the cultural significance of textiles and garments. For Fruitmarket, Mahama is making a brand-new body of work inspired by the Gallery's unique physical location, supported on columns above Waverley railway station. This proximity to – and dependence on – the railway is the starting point for large scale drawings, sculpture and installations referencing his own interest in and using material from the now defunct colonial-era railway of Ghana. Art Attack: @ibrahimmahama3, the Ghanaian artist giving a London landmark a Ghanaian makeover. Known for his work on recycled materials, Mahama is transforming a British Landmark, Barbican Centre Located in London, the capital of Grrat Britain 🇬🇧, Mahama has covered the building with 2,000 m² of magenta fabric made of jute bags . The 37-year-old in an interview with thr BBC News revealed that he turned to local experts in northern Ghana near his studio in Tamale, to weave and sew this project on a colossal scale. During three months, a team of 1,000 people hand-stitched 2,000 square metres of striped cotton, before decorating it with 130 traditional smocks known as batakari. Purple Hibiscus and Mahama’s other large-scale public art installations reference the power of collective labour and the memories that textiles contain. Jute sacks - used to transport cocoa, rice and charcoal - were draped over the National Theatre in Accra, Ghana’s capital city. It was Mahama’s way of exploring the history of trade in commodities and globalisation. His latest project at the Barbican showcases a typically Ghanaian item he has been collecting since 2012. Its objective is to denounce the flaws of globalization by sewing together these bags that have been used all over the world to transport cocoa, rice’s, or coal. The Ghanaian is not his first attempt with this creation entitled “Purple Hibiscus”. Invited in 2015 to Venice Biennale, the artist caused a sensation by covering the exhibition building, again, with jute bags. #GhanaStories #Art #IbrahimMahama

Is the distinction between art and craft finally over? 💕 @adrianopedrosa curator of the @venice.art.biennale thinks so - shown in the dominance of artworks in materials once thought to be ‘lesser’ because of their association with craft 💛 In London that seems to be the case too - see these amazing works in ceramics, textile, embroidery, strings🌟 1 and 2) #woodydeothello @stephenfriedmangallery 3) #ibrahimmahama s amazing installation @barbicancentre 4) #wuranataschaogunji @tiwanicontemporary 5) #pauladoprado @tiwanicontemporary #crafts #artandcraft #artandtextiles #artandembroidery #ceramics #contemporaryceramics

Hello London! Happy to experience #IbrahimMahama “Purple Hibiscus” @barbicancentre. It was created in collaboration with hundreds of Ghanaian craftspeople who wove and sewed the colossal fabric panels by hand, to be fitted to the barbican’s brutalist building.
