Are you looking for some quick and simple swaps you can make to elevate your gut health? 🙋🏼‍♀️⁠ ⁠ Look no further… Here are my top supermarket swaps for gut health 👇🏼⁠ ⁠ 👉🏽Chicken stock —> Bone broth. Bone broth is packed full of many gut-nourishing nutrients such as glycine, which helps decrease inflammation in your gut. Many cheap supermarket stocks contain high amounts of preservatives and are highly processed which can impact the health of your gut. ⁠ ⁠ 👉🏽White rice —> Brown rice. Give your gut the added nutrients by swapping for brown rice which contains higher amounts of fibre - perfect for gut health⁠ ⁠ 👉🏽Canola/Vegetable oil —> Extra virgin olive oil. Canola and vegetable oils are known inflammatory oils that may trigger further gut inflammation whereas good quality olive oil is an anti-inflammatory oil. ⁠ ⁠ 👉🏽Whey protein —> Collagen - many people experience issues digesting whey protein. If this is you, swap for collagen - another great addition to smoothies ⁠ ⁠ 👉🏽Dairy milk chocolate —> Dark chocolate. Milk chocolate whilst it is super delicious is packed full of sugar and dairy - two things that can cause havoc for the gut microbiome. ⁠ ⁠ 👉🏽Potato chips —> Cobs lightly salted popcorn. Potato chips are made with inflammatory oils whereas Cobs popcorn is considered a slightly better option in terms of ingredients.⁠ ⁠ My challenge to you in the coming weeks is to start reading the labels! Look at the ingredients and aim for products with fewer ingredients and free from inflammatory oils such as canola and vegetable oil as well as additives, etc 🥳

The BIG day is about to show up before you least expect it... It’s almost #colonoscopy day! We understand the emotions that can go into getting your colonoscopy. Let’s check out a couple of tips below on how you can prepare: 1️⃣ Mentally prepare: There’s more preparation involved besides the #colonoscopyprep itself. Being mentally prepared for your upcoming scope can help you physically prepare for the next couple of days. Accepting that this procedure is helping you to know more about your condition and taking the necessary steps for your health is a great place to start. 2️⃣ Shop for your items in advance: The last thing we want to feel when preparing for our procedure is to feel rushed. I recommend purchasing your items at least 5 days in advance so that any items that you forget, can be purchased sooner than later. ⭐️ Extra tip: if you’re having Jell-o on prep day, be sure to prepare the night before. 3️⃣ Stock up: Make sure that you have plenty of water, electrolyte-enhancing beverages, medications (as prescribed), and clear liquids. Remember to purchase items that are clear and without pulp. Please check with your doctor’s office if there is any confusion around your prep or what you should be doing. 4️⃣ Get comfy: We know that prep day can be challenging from the moment you wake up. Try wearing your favorite/comfiest clothes and slippers around the house. Setting up a cozy spot on the couch and watching your favorite shows can make the prep a tad easier. 5️⃣ Meditate: There are many apps that can be used to help calm your nervous system when preparing for your procedure. Setting some time aside to focus on your inner self and finding your calm can be a great way to prepare for your procedure. Some of my favorite apps include Calm, Nerva, Headspace, and even YouTube #meditation channels. 6️⃣ Breathe: This process can be both draining and stressful for a multitude of reasons. It’s important to remember why you are doing this and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel! KIWI FRUIT 🥝⁠ ⁠ Eating healthily is integral to good health, and certain foods such as kiwi fruit can enhance health.⁠ ⁠ Kiwi fruit is actually a large berry originating from China. It contains good amounts of fibre, especially if you include the skin. ⁠ ⁠ In the UK we mostly have the brown furry skinned kiwi, whilst the golden non furry skinned kiwi fruits can be found in other counties. ⁠ ⁠ I don’t know about you, but furry skin doesn’t do it for me. Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia, MS, IBD, psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, Graves’, Addisons’, vasculitis, pernicious anemia, celiac, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and many others often come with more and more PAIN. Depending on the disease it can get harder to use ones hands, painful to sit, to lie down, to walk or to do everyday tasks. 🌱 These Moroccan sweet potato & lentil patties were so popular in our house this week! 👉 One of the things I love about them is that they’re perfect to make ahead – a lifesaver when you’re busy and just don’t have time to cook! It’s been a while, huh? - Roughly a year ago, I was in a rough flare induced from what I was eating during the time and stress (big time). Needless to say, it gave me a sharp wake up call. - I altered my diet, focusing on pre- and pro-biotic foods, but most importantly, I started to see food in a different light. - I stopped looking at food as a cause of issue anytime a fraction of a piece touched my mouth. It took quite a bit of time and medicine to bring me to a spot of “healthy”, but I’m here. - For about 80-85% of the week, I am fairly strict on what I eat. Meats, lots of veggies, fruits, and kefir. On the other 20%, I enjoy everything else. - It’s been on heck of a ride, but I think I found a combination of medicine, mindfulness, & nutrition that is helping me moderate my journey. - How is your Crohn’s / Colitis walk been lately? Did you know that meditative practice can reduce mucosal inflammation and assist management of inflammatory bowel disease [IBD]? In a double-blinded, randomised controlled clinical trial, 37 IBD patients received 8 sessions of mindfulness-based interventions over 8 weeks, including mindful breathing and body scanning, compared to patients receiving standard medical therapy alone (n=20). Patients were assessed for changes in mucosal inflammation biomarker, faecal calprotectin, at baseline and after six months. When looking to improve IBD symptoms and see less flare-ups, it’s so important to channel the right energy and mindset. I failed to do this for many years, and it held me back from my healing process! It wasn’t until I worked on my energy and mindset that I saw the results I truly wanted. Ask yourself: ❌ Are you currently living with a victim mindset? ❌ Are you defining yourself as your disease? ❌ Are you focus on staying stuck? If you answered YES to any of these questions, you want to switch your outlook and where you are focusing your energy. This can be done by: 💜 Focusing on what you DO want. Write what you want down and place reminders around your home. This will help you stay on track, and you’ll make better decisions and lifestyle choices. 💜 BE CLEAR on what you want. We can’t get to where we want to go if we don’t have the map to success in place. What do you want? To see less bloating? Use the washroom less frequently? Symptoms of an IBD Flare-Up: If you have been diagnosed with an IBD, you’ll have most likely experienced the above symptoms at one point or another. When dealing with IBD, it’s important to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of a flare-up. Once you have a clear understanding of this, you’ll be able to adjust your daily habits and routine in order to get your flare under control. It’s also important that you are following the advice of your medical doctor! Although I have been in remission for the last 2.5 years in counting, some of these symptoms can still present themselves. This happens if I am under too much stress, I’m not eating the right foods, and when I’m experiencing energy blockages from difficult emotions! When these symptoms start presenting themselves again, I know I need to do an audit of my current lifestyle to see what needs a slight tweak! Think of these symptoms as signs from your body that are letting you know that something in your life needs improvement. It’s easy to get swept up in a victim mentality thinking “why me?”- instead we should be asking ourselves “why is this happening FOR me?” and/or “what is my body asking me to do?” Do you know someone who is struggling with IBD? Gorgeous day here yesterday in Twickers with my girls, helps that the sun was shining right?! As I move into full time nutrition work and help more people, lots of you have been asking questions and finding out more about what I do, thank you! Well, this is a big part of what I do....I work with people with bowel disease to improve their quality of life, be the parent they want to be, be the family member, friend, colleague they want to be. Go for a walk and the shops without fear. Have the energy and confidence to be themselves again and enjoy their lives while living with IBD (it will always be there!) Although I’ve posted a photo of me and my girls, this isn’t about me but for inspiration only - 2 months ago I was in a year long big flare of Crohns and at Christmas I could barely function, there was no way I could have fun like this with my family then and if I did I was putting a brave face on to cope. I wouldn’t have noticed the flowers or been able to take my dog out to meet a friend. These photos are to show that those suffering can feel better too and get their lives back. It’s not easy or a quick fix but it is so worth it in the end. Bowel disease is like having the fun police with you all the time, totally dull as dishwasher and exhausting and depressing. So, this is what I do in a nutshell - I help others get their lives back. Please spread the word that there is hope and through nutrition work, research and science improvement to people’s life’s can be made. There’s no one size fits all - the work I do with my clients is so individual, complex and everyday we are learning and making a difference to their life quality. Today, I want to tell you more about my history with chronic gut health conditions. So, here it goes… We have a family history of Crohn's disease. When I started presenting with bowel symptoms including pains, alternating bowel motions & intense bloating my mum took me to see a naturopath. After making some dietary changes and taking some supplements I felt a lot better. This was also the moment I realised that I wanted to become a Naturopath. Fast forward a couple of years. I was in Melbourne studying naturopathy. I started experiencing all of those symptoms again. I underwent every blood test, scan & saw multiple health professionals. It got to the point where I was in constant pain. I remember I was even getting this weird rash on my stomach. All the results, EVERY ONE of them come back clear. I was frustrated. I was in pain. I started seeing a naturopath again in Melbourne. I went on the FODMAP diet. It helped, that was until I ate a bloody high FODMAP food. I was in my 3rd year. I knew the nutritional benefits of all these amazing foods I was now avoiding. It didn’t make sense to me. This is where my passion for research into gut health, IBS, SIBO, Crohn's & the microbiome really begun. I then did some microbiome tests. I now have done numerous, perhaps slightly obsessed (I recently just did another one post-birth). At the time I found an overgrowth, unwanted bacteria and very low strains of some very important bacteria. I started to treat the underlying cause - what was clear in the microbiome results. My gut pain went away. My bloating reduced. I could now eat many FODMAP foods. I was no longer living with ongoing constipation. I now know my triggers. I know the importance of diet and how to best support my bacteria. I know how much stress affects my gut. I now focus on preventing relapse, living a life mostly free of symptoms and with no fear of food. This is why I am passionate about helping people to resolve their complex gut health issues. It’s a slowwwwwww and steady process.Patience and being in tune with your body is the key to success. This is month #4 of very slow weaning off some anti inflammatory meds for my digestive system. These are by far the best turmeric capsules ever prescribed by @drjordinwiggins. A single capsule has 120 mg of natural anti inflammatory benefits. Yes I had a mild set back last week and bumped up to 6 tablets of my meds for 2 days, but then things settled and I went back down to 4. I know I will have some setbacks on certain days and I’ve accepted that. I celebrate the days and weeks when I’m blessed with fantastic ones!

The Stages of Kefir. - #1: Pulling from yesterday’s loot! The jar on the left is double fermented milk kefir, and the right jar is milk with the grains. - #2: Separating the kefir grains from the rest of the white gold. The liquid drained is placed in another jar where it’s fermented for another 12-24 hours to really give it a nutritional punch. - #3: Grains totally separated from the fermented milk. - #4: These grains are then placed in the same jar, and milk is poured over for another round of kefir!
