Through the last few months, I've researched, reported, interviewed and travelled extensively to write about how India's health system has responded to treat survivors of gender-based violence. This was all supported by the Pulitzer Center. Here's what I found: ▪️India doesn't have a comprehensive policy to treat survivors of gender-based violence. Right now, we have no system in place even though violence has long-term impacts on women's health. Even though doctors are a survivors first--sometimes only-- point of contact, they have not been empowered with resources or training to provide that first line of care. ▪️Doctors, nurses and other health care staff recieve little to no training to treat survivors with sensitivity and care. There's no training modules for this in medical school curriculum, nor is there any national policy or budgets for this ▪️ India has largely focussed on perpetrators of violence and ignored the needs of survivors. This is shown in what policies and programmes we find. ▪️India's flagship programmes under Nirbhaya Fund barely include healthcare for survivors of violence. The committee doesn't even have a member from the Ministry of Health. ▪️ There are stellar examples of how healthcare systems can step up. Dilaasa in Mumbai, Muktha in Bengaluru and many more. These projects need more support and funding. Since health is a state subject the roll out of such projects vary, we need a more central and national programme to make this universal. In 2018 I saw a Podcast Movement Challenge inviting people to create a podcast in 30 days. I had been thinking of creating a podcast for some time, since several people had asked me for podcast resources on gender and, at the time, there was very little available, especially from a trans perspective. I saw this as an opportunity for accountability and support and chose to participate in the challenge. I recorded my first episode when I was going down with a cold but the determination of launching my podcast within 30 days spurred me on! I won one of the prizes generally offered by Podcast Movement: a trip and registration to their annual conference, which that year was in Philadelphia. By summer of 2018, I had recorded a few episodes and attended the Podcast Movement conference, which helped me gain more skills and contacts in this new area. Every time I think about giving the podcast up, someone lets me know how much they appreciate a specific episode or another and so I have kept going, even though the pandemic definitely slowed me down! One of my goals was to offer a podcast that offered nuanced conversations about gender and how it impacts so many different parts of our lives. I didn’t expect the level of support and enthusiasm I encountered. Complete strangers have been listening to episodes and sharing how they impacted them! I have learned so much from each interviewees as well as from having a platform I can use to share some of my own reflections as well. One of the struggles is to keep going on top of full-time work and all other aspects of life. Gender Stories is truly a labor of love and I am grateful for the support I also get from one of my partners, Root Holden, who is also the editor and producer of my podcast. پچھلے دو مہینے کی مسافری میں کافی دفعہ پوچھا گیا کہ کیا میں مرد ہوں یا عورت؟ کیا جواب دوں میں اس بات کا کہ جب مجھے صنف کے دائروں کی حدود کی خود کوئی خاص سمجھ نہیں۔ میں مرد بھی ہوں، عورت بھی ہوں، دونوں بھی ہوں اور کچھ بھی نہیں ہوں۔ کیا فرق پڑتا ہے؟ سماجی تعریف کے مطابق مجھ میں عادتیں سب صنفون کی ہیں۔ تنقیدی بھی ہوں، جزباتی بھی ہوں، دلیر بھی ہوں، ڈر بھی لگتا ہے، لا تعلق بھی ہوں، حساس بھی ہوں، موں پھٹ بھی ہوں، سوچ سمجھ کر بھی بول لیتی ہوں، آزاد بھی ہوں اور قید بھی ہوں، پر اعتماد بھی ہوں اور خود اعتمادی کے مسائل بھی ہیں۔ عوامی مقامات میں ایسے چلتی ہوں جیسے ماں کی جاگیر ہو اور گھر کے اندر بیٹھنا بھی بہت اچھا لگتا ہے۔ تمام حالات و واقعات اور pre-conceived notions کو مدنظر رکھتے ہوئے ہم اس نتیجے پر پہنچے ہیں کہ اگر مجھے صنفی طور پر مرد سمجھا جائیگا تو نامرد لگونگی اور اگر عورت کی طرح دیکھا جائیگا تو بری عورت نظر آئونگی۔ اب بندا/بندی جائے تو کہاں جائے؟ یہاں اس بات کا زکر کرنا بھی بہت ضروری ہے کہ جنس اور صنف میں بہت فرق ہوتا ہے۔ بات یہاں جنس کی نہیں صنف کی ہو رہی ہے۔ ہر معاشرے میں ہر چوٹی بڑی چیز کے اسول اور طور طریقے صنف سے جڑے ہوتے ہے۔ انسان کو کیا کرنے کی اجازت ہے اور کیا نہیں، کیسے اٹھنا ہے، بیٹھنا ہے، چلنا ہے، پھرنا ہے، کیسے کپڑے پہننے ہیں، کیسے زندگی کے فیصلے لینے ہیں، اچھی عورت کیسی ہوتی ہے، مرد کیسا ہوتا ہے، یہ سب باتیں ہمیں بچپن سے سیکھائی جاتی ہیں اور جو بھی ان constructs سے باہر قدم رکھتا ہے، اسے اچھا نہیں سمجھا جاتا۔ خاص طور پر اگر وہ انسان عورت ہو۔ تمہارا کتا ٹومی اور ہمارا کتا کتا والی بات آجاتی ہے۔ اور ہمارے جیسے دیسی معاشروں میں یہ کچھ زیادہ ہوتا ہے کیونکہ ہم extra قسم کے لوگ ہیں۔ شاید اسی لیے مجھے کسی ایک صنف کے دائرے میں سختی سے زندگی گزارنے میں گھٹن ہوتی ہے۔ موقع، وقت، ذاتی خواہش اور طلب کے بدلنے کے ساتھ ساتھ صنفی روپ اور رویہ تبدیل کرتے رہنے سے میری روح کو سکوں رہتا ہے۔ شاید میری ذات کسی ایک جگہ ٹکنے کے بجائے صنف کے سپیکٹرم پر آزادی سے گھومنا پسند کرتی ہے۔ Disclaimer: کچھ چیزوں کو بیان کرنے کے لیے اردو میں الفاظ نہیں تھے تو بے شرموں کی طرح انگریزی گھسا دی۔ میں لکھاری نہیں ہوں بس لفظوں سے کھیلنا پسند ہے سو کھیل رہی ہوں۔ اگر اچھا لگے پڑھ کر تو بتا ضرور دیجئیے گا، validation سب کو ہی اچھی لگتی ہے۔ #traveldiary #musafirkhaza #safarnama #genderstories #antiinfluencer #canttouchthis

To zdjęcie, które zrobiła w anturażu Burakowskiej @___p_a_u_l_i_ świetnie wpisuje się w mój własny pejzaż myślenia o kategorii płci:) Może dla wielu z was to nie jest wogle zagadnienie, ale dla mnie owszem jest i to odkąd w sumie pamiętam tylko nie miałam narzędzi, żeby ten opór jakoś zwerbalizować. Większość reakcji na to zdjęcie akurat jest np. taka: wyglądasz tu jak Dave Gahan, czy tam inny facet. Oczywiście, to jest b pochlebne kiedy ludzie kojarzą nas z jakimiś innymi ciekawymi ludźmi. I oczywiście skojrzenje mnie z płcią męską nie jest dla mnie w żaden sposób problematyczne. Nawet więcej - poniekąd takich reakcji oczekuję. Niesamowicie drażni mnie etykietowanie ludzi i ich zachowań epitetami to jest takie kobiece, to jest takie męskie. Z tego powodu, że płeć nie do końca jest faktem przyrodniczym jak by tak pogrzebać mocniej w tych molekułach, ale na pewno płeć jest kulturową inscenizacją. Narzucanie ludziom pewnych zachowań ze względu na binarny podział wedle cech anatomii jest niczym innym jak opresją. Dzielenie ich ze względu na anatomiczne cechy - również. Zgadzam się z tym co napisała Judith Butler, że powinniśmy wystrzegać się idealizowania określonych sposobów wyrażania płci, bo prowadzi to do tworzenia nowych hierarchii i wykluczeń. Wg mnie dzielenie na męskie i kobiece zawęża pola j właśnie wyklucza. Zawsze czuję się dziwnie, kiedy ktoś pisze - oh właśnie wyskoczyłam z dresów i ubrałam sukienkę. Wreszcie mogłam poczuć się kobieco. Nie neguję odczuć takich osób, ale czy zastanawialiście się nad tym, dlaczego sukienka pozwala dopiero czuć się „kobieco”? Dlaczego osoba oznaczona jako mężczyzna nie może też tak się w niej czuć? Czy oznaką męskości jest to, że taka osoba nigdy nie płacze? Czy przede wszystkim nie jesteśmy po prostu ludźmi z całą potężną gamą potrzeb i możliwości?
