With a vision of hope and renewal, Burnell transformed the abandoned building into the first grocery store in the Lower Ninth Ward since Katrina. It didn't take long for Burnell to realize that opening the store unearthed a deeper issue. Burnell realized many in his community couldn't even afford basic groceries. With the spirit of community and resilience, Burnell began giving away essentials for free. His generosity extended during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many locals lost their jobs. He continued to provide for those in need, even though he was getting behind on his mortgage payments. Meanwhile, word had spread beyond the Lower Ninth Ward of Burnell's perseverance and compassion. A complete stranger, touched by Burnell's story, made a quiet plan to help Burnell: he started a Go Fund Me fundraising campaign to support Burnell’s store. The response was overwhelming. Donations poured in, racking up more than half-million dollars. This outpouring of support made sure Burnell's store stays open for the residents of Lower Ninth Ward.
