A first time viewing for me, my knowledge of this film was I know the story pretty much, but also from Cher and Christian watching it in Clueless, so much so that when that moment popped I was like “I know this part!” And of course I have watched all the Spartacus tv show from the 2010s, a VERY different beast to this. I enjoyed this one a lot, a classic for a reason - has a big epic scale to it and great performances, though I’ll admit sometimes the 50s/60s style of acting did throw me off a little, it felt very theatrical - and for a movie that seemed pretty tame I was surprised they show a hand being chopped off. There’s not much a Kubrick in this, I don’t really think of him when I think of this film, I can see why people don’t really talk about it when they talk about his films. In the end I probably wouldn’t rush to watch it again, but I’m glad it’s off the watchlist. 8 rebellions /10

I've had a night of The Night of the Hunter. I was joined at a very interesting presentation at the Hollywood Heritage Museum by actor Michael Chapin, who played one of the delinquents lounging around waiting for Ruby (Gloria Castillo)-- it's Michael who says "Must be Thursday. Here comes Ruby." (Michael's brother, Billy Chapin, co-stars in the film as harried young John Harper.) And joining Michael was Preston Jones, the estimable author of the excellent making-of book on Night of the Hunter, Heaven and Hell to Play With. Last night, in the Cineplex Robeon, I chose another movie I've yet to see from the "1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" list. This time I picked Charles Laughton's only movie as a director, 1955's 'The Night Of The Hunter'. Robert Mitchum plays a self-proclaimed preacher named Harry Powell. He spends some time in prison with a death row inmate who has hidden $10,000 (worth about $125,000 today) somewhere near his old home where his wife and children live. After the execution and Powell's release he heads directly to the widow and her children with the purpose of stealing the money from them. Charles Laughton crafts a nightmarish world with the help of Stanley Cortez who worked on 'The Magnificent Ambersons' with Orson Welles. Laughton used highly stylized sets to create an almost funhouse world but it's Cortez's cinematography and lighting that make this movie particularly unsettling. Robert Mitchum's performance is also one of the big factors in the feel of the film. Mitchum plays his character with enough charm and confidence that he can fool most people... but what he's hiding, that most he encounters never see, is a complete lack of conscience or empathy. In my opinion, this is one of his best roles. I'd say De Niro took more from Harry Powell than Mitchum's Max Cady when he did the remake of 'Cape Fear'. Not that Mitchum's performance in the original 'Cape Fear' isn't worthy but what he does here in Laughton's film is sinister. 'The Night Of The Hunter' didn't do well at the box office and was panned by critics when it was released. Laughton vowed never to direct another film (and he didn't) which is too bad. This film is a classic that Stephen King has been quoted as saying it's the scariest movie he's ever seen. Watch this for Mitchum's performance and Shelley Winters' death scene... I won't give it away but it's not what you're expecting. This comedy is a pleasure and I loved seeing all of the cameos by many #filmnoir greats, my favorite being #VeronicaLake. #LanaTurner demonstrates her amazing screen presence as well. I think she might come in first in the case of the camera falling in love. The second her face appears she is riveting, and when she speaks she casts a magic spell. This film (wonderfully funny btw) was the source for the public perception of Henry as a lecherous slob (probably from the chicken-eating scene.) Historians will argue that the King was in fact a highly refined man who was more concerned with hygiene than the average 16th century Englishman. Charles Laughton, on the contrary, was apparently a real *dirty* queen. I just finished Scotty Bowers' book "Full Service" and the chapter that talks about Charles turned my stomach. Den välrenommerade försvarsadvokaten Wilfrid Robarts (Charles Laughton) har knappt hunnit återhämta sig från hjärtattacken som nästan kostade honom livet, innan han får ett nytt, spännande mordfall på sitt bord. Hans närstående försöker övertyga honom att åta sig något lättare, och mindre pulshöjande, som en skilsmässa eller nån bouppteckning kanske, men Wilfrid vill tillbaka in i hetluften! Fallet, i vilket en ung man nu anklagas för att ha haft ihjäl en äldre, rik och ogift kvinna, verkar dessutom inte vara särskilt krävande för Wilfrids egen del heller, såvida han skulle åta sig fallet. Har sen dess sett och golvats av kanske en handfull till av hans filmer, men denna, som väl brukar lyftas som en av hans fem bästa all time, hade jag fortfarande osedd, tills förra veckan, då jag äntligen fick plastat av den! Tristemente no tuvo éxito en su día y Laughton no volvió a dirigir. El viernes a las 21:00 "Dos semanas en otra ciudad" de Vincente Minnelli, otra gran película de cine dentro del cine, que algunos consideran como una secuela de Cautivos del Mal. Nada mejor para estrenar nueva sección esporádica ( #unaynomas), destinada a obras únicas de profesionales del cine - generalmente actores -, que hacerlo con esta magnífica película, un cuento perverso ambientado en la Gran Depresión que asoló en los años 30 unos Estados Unidos plagados de hambre, ilusiones rotas, fanatismo religioso y deseos enterrados. Cuenta con unas actuaciones de lujo, especialmente la de Robert Mitchum interpretando a un fanático predicador asesino de viudas (cual Barba Azul) que lleva un puñal redentor y los nudillos marcados con las letras "amor" y "odio", cada palabra en cada mano. También aparece una veteranísima Lillian Gish, auténtico mito del cine mudo, aquí protegiendo a niños que la sociedad ha rechazado y que son víctimas y, a la vez, la esperanza. El tratamiento de la infancia aquí es audaz y nada ortodoxo. El film cuenta con un excelente guión, una magnífica fotografía en blanco y negro y está sorprendentemente muy bien dirigido para ser un debut. Incluso hay muchos aciertos visuales y plásticamente es muy bello, hasta sublime. Referencias bíblicas, el pecado, la ambición, la redención, la crueldad y la inocencia van de la mano en esta obra única que no por casualidad termina en Navidad. Demasiada osadía para su época. La película no fue entendida. Fue un fracaso comercial y frustró una prometedora carrera como director del gran actor inglés Charles Laughton (1899-1962) que, pese a su reputación y brillante opera prima, sólo dirigió esta obra considerada hoy día de culto.
