Today we’d like to brag on someone pretty awesome: Julie Mears. Julie is A GREAT veterinarian, GREAT athlete, GREAT CrossFitter, and all-around great PERSON. When we were all quarantined, she did our #CFEatHome program, adapting all of our workouts to her home fitness space. Now that we are re-opened, she’s kicking butt AT CFE, she’s back to bringing a positive spirit and attitude TO the gym and bringing joy to everyone she meets. Today, we would like to feature her #CFEatHome quarantine story. Here’s what she had to say about doing CrossFit from home... 1) “The toughest thing about quarantine CrossFit is not having the extra push and camaraderie from my friends and coaches.” 2) “Personal victories I have had include my latest deadlift pr of 240 lbs, completion of 6 Spartan virtual races, competing in the CrossFit Virtual Open and a 75 day fitness streak which I plan on continuing until 100 days! I am wearing a weight vest for most workouts for all of May. Nutrition victories include an ongoing commitment to Paleo and utilizing Kelsey for ongoing advice. I am no longer targeting to loose weight but more focus on building lean muscle and gym victories.This has been a huge mindset change for me.” 3) “My favorite CrossFit story is when I did my first synchronized deadlift workout with Taylor [Gucciardo Meyer]. It was a fun day of fitness. I love how we are always learning new things. The most recent new movement we performed was during quarantine, the devils lunge! #CFEatHome CROSSFITTER SPOTLIGHT: Allyson Beaber We’d like to take a moment to recognize one of our favorite midday CrossFitters, Allyson Beaber. Allyson started at CrossFit Edwardsville in one of our 21-Day Challenges and has now been CrossFitting with us for several years. She’s a mother, wife, and professional woman with plenty of demands on her time- but she always makes time for herself and for her fitness at CrossFit E. She’s also DOMINATED her at-home fitness during our #QuaranTeams challenge, with consistently “green-level” performance on fitness & other categories. She was the #1 POINT EARNER in the #QuaranTeams challenge. Let’s hear from Allyson, in her own words... THE TOUGHEST THING AVOUT EXERCISING DURING QUARANTINE: “The toughest thing for me about Crossfitting during quarantine is not having that person next to you to push you through the WOD. I have my kids working out with me, but I am motivating them to keep going rather than them pushing me to go faster.” PERSONAL VICTORIES DURING QUARANTINE: “Quarantine has given me the time to really focus on my nutrition. I have been able to go back to macro counting and taking the time to prepare each meal and fit my numbers perfectly. Since the nutrition is on point, my work outs are feeling pretty good too.” FUNNY CROSSFIT MEMORY: “I love everything about Crossfitting and our CFE community. I can’t say that I have a favorite story, because it is all my favorite. I can tell you that during quarantine my kids are hilarious. I have an 11 year old son and 9 year old daughter that do all of the daily WODs with me. Those two are in constant competition. I think one of the reasons my daughter hates when we have squats in the work out is because in one of the very first workouts we did, my son would fart during EVERY squat. I love how an intense workout forces me to be present in the moment. And in the present moment, I have the power to create the life I want. When I stop dragging the past into my present, it loses its power over me. When I take my eyes off the future “what-ifs”, I release the anxiety it carries. This is a system we have going in our house right now while under quarantine. Pink dots for Beth Hooks and green dots for me (I drink 8 bottles/day and she drinks 7) we refill these before bed and have made it a contest through the day. Bottom line is you have to find what works for you. I always guessed my spirit animal would be the wolf: 🐺 lean, wily, resilient, adaptable, a hunter. After doing some reading on it this evening, apparently the wolf as a spirit animal actually represents other things. Dave’s favorite meal - burgers on sweet potato latkes....burger are 1/2 beefalo 1/2 ground turkey (or chicken) grilled with onions, jalapeños, salt and pepper. Latkes are just shredded sweet potatoes (from our garden!), a little bit of gluten free flour, 2 eggs, and a pinch of salt, fried in organic coconut oil. Topped with arugula, spinach (from the garden!), tomatoes, pepper slices, sprouts, and mustard. The kids asked for “fried apples”, which is just apple slices, cinnamon and a dash of salt, sautéed in coconut oil. Last night we ordered take out from our favorite Mexican restaurant...we ate a LOT of cheese dip, and I really felt like garbage afterwards. I prefer to eat like this, making better choices! #cfeathome #quaranteams @crossfitedwardsville
