This book is an old favorite of mine. I first read it back in middle school for English class. Usually, the type of books read in school are classics that students would end up hating. This one is an exception because it’s about a boy who lives his life as a greaser in the 1960’s. It feels so much more relatable to the YA audience compared to any other classic taught in school. What I love most about this book are the characters. Ponyboy is a very sympathetic and engaging narrator. He tells the story honestly, which makes him relatable. While he’s apart of a lower class compared to the Socs, a group of privileged rich kids, he’s still a good kid. He helps those who are in need and treats others with respect. If you were to ask me who I would recommend this book to, I’d say this is a book for everyone to read. It’s a great story with compelling characters and interesting themes regarding loyalty and being a good person. I know this book gets banned in some schools, but I think young teen readers should pick it up. Bullying is a lot more than teasing someone, but can seem like the same thing. Bullying is repeated behavior that is not wanted by the person receiving it (or the target). According to the Boys Town website, 50% of adolescents aged 13-18 have a mental health disorder, and suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for people ages 10 to 34. These are frightening statistics, and why it is so important to keep the conversation open between you and your teen(s). They need to know that you are always there to listen, but if for any reason they aren't comfortable talking to their parents, that help is only a phone call away. When it comes to Bullying prevention, @BoysTown has a whole program dedicated to helping those who are dealing with the issue or those who are trying to help someone who is. 🥰I received this amazing review from a professional in the education industry, I was so pleased to know my book was making a difference to the students: I bought this book a few months ago as I work within the SEN department of a secondary school, and when I saw this workbook on Amazon, I knew it would help a lot of the students I work with that are struggling with their self esteem . I work with students from year 7-10, ages 11-15, and the book has helped them understand a lot about themselves and realise they are not alone with how they feel sometimes.
