West Virginia is so full of beauty and adventure. When I was a kid, my mom took my brothers and I on a trip all around WV to see places like Seneca Rocks. We hiked all the way up to the top. Back in the 90's, they had a small sign at the top that said something like "STOP, experienced hikers only," because walking to U is extremely dangerous. (I'm sure there are now way more safety precautions to prevent people from going out there.) However, my uncle who was quite the adventurer told us kids to follow him and walk part of the way toward the U. I will never forget starting at my feet putting one foot in front of the other and him shouting, "LOOK AT THE VIEW FROM THE U!" while trying to stay perfectly balanced because...life depended on it 🤣 We didn't go too far, but that is an experience I will never forget! After a little front porch gardening in the morning, Friends of Smoke Hole Canyon co-founder @grayowlfeather and yours truly took a few hours to tease trout down in the canyon. Along the way, we replaced the flag on the grave of indigenous Revolutionary War hero William Eagle, and laid a bouquet of wildflowers on the grave of his wife, Mary. Mother Nature rewarded us with this tasty Hawk's heart growing right above them. Is everyone as excited for the Bear Rocks Loop Trail as we are? 🤩 Tucker Curran, our recreation coordinator has been hard at work with others in our organization and the Forest Service to finish up this trail. Donated in 2000 by Dominion Energy, Bear Rocks Preserve is the most photographed place along the east coast and is The Nature Conservancy’s premier preserve. This .75 loop trail will let you fully adventure the property while taking in all the beautiful views. 👀 These specific photos depict the construction of a staircase you will find along the trail. Yeah right, that sounds cool, but what does that actually mean? ☀️ It means that going into this course, our staff had paddling skills, technical river knowledge, rescue ability, teaching ability, group management, and interpersonal skills. 🌊 Through this course they demonstrate a knowledge and ability to model raft guiding teaching and learning theory. They demonstrate an ability to paddle efficiently, follow safe boating practices, take environmental conditions into account, practice sustainable river etiquette, demonstrate knowledge of rafting equipment, terminology, and paddle captain responsibilities. They also demonstrate the ability to organize a group, plan a trip, and travel strategies. They demonstrate knowledge of river dynamics, seating & proper positioning, model a vast array of paddling skills, river rescue, communication, boat recovery, and re-entry into the boat. This is a pass or fail course, and our 5 guides who just completed it all passed! Congratulations to all for your hard work! 🌤 Since 1972, safety has been a priority to us as an outfitter. #TheHikers365 294/365 miles completed Davis Creek, Alligator Rock, Teaberry Rock, Oak Flats and Middle Ridge Loop - 5.58 miles Grueling hike but with two very interesting finds: #1 a box turtle - 1,150 ft up in the middle of the trail on top of a ridge. How it got up there, I have no idea. I literally said "WTF are you doing up here, buddy?" #2 a ghost pipe - these flowers are only found in 5 states are only out for one week of the year! How lucky!
