Spinning is known for its similarity to road cycling. Created by cyclists, the Spinning program mimics the outdoor sport with its principles and movements. With this in mind, it might seem counterintuitive to do “jumps” during cycle class. On a Spinner bike, jumps are when you go from seated to standing in a rhythmic pattern. For example, 8-count jumps mean eight pedal rotations while seated, then eight pedal rotations in a standing position. The goal is to go back and forth from one to the other while maintaining a smooth pedal stroke. But how is this like riding on a road? According to the Spinning website, there are several reasons why you would stand during a ride (or race). These include the following. 🚲 Breaking away from the pack: During a race, a rider might power out the saddle on a hill when trying to pass another cyclist. 🚲 Powering up a switchback: When making a sharp turn on a mountainous road, a rider may come out of the saddle, trying to maintain momentum and ride at a consistent cadence. 🚲 Going over the crest: At the top of a hill, a rider may add resistance and quickly power out of the saddle while trying to get over the crest of a hill. 🚲 Posture break: If a rider on a hill can’t keep turning the pedals over smoothly, they may come out of the saddle to get the momentum needed to regain proper form. Now, it’s not likely a road cyclist would go up and down, in and out of the saddle in a rhythmic sequence. But jumps represent the transition from seated to standing that cyclists frequently do. Good evening, friends and neighbors! Last week was actually a short week so I'm going to knock out my update now. On Tuesday, I had a meeting at Hazel's House of Hope to explore options for keeping the triage shelter open. My son and I also walked around downtown doing some PODA outreach to businesses. On Wednesday, I again attended the Mon Co Commission meeting to ask for cooperation in addressing some of our social service issues. I then attended the National Police Week wreath laying ceremony on the courthouse square, went to the amphitheater to check some progress being made on cleanup of the surrounding area, and delivered some PODA stickers to businesses. That evening, we had our PODA kickoff event which seemed to go really well 🤞 On Thursday, I spent the day with descendants of John Edwards, the former slave who essentially started the first water company here in Morgantown. Around 25 family members traveled in for a dedication ceremony, lunch, and a bus tour of the Greenmont neighborhood. It was a lovely day! On Saturday, my family and I made our downtown rounds to the Farmer's Market, the Lockhouse Studio Sale, and the Moonlight Market. Again, it was a bit of a short week. As you can see, no one is adopting like we so desperately need. There are not enough homes for all the homeless pets. There’s no such thing as an “oops” litter, it’s simply ignorance. There are resources to assist in spay and neuter, utilize them. We have 11 dogs to find homes for and the humane society has 20+. We have already this morning received two calls about people needing to surrender their dogs. This is a people problem! All of these dogs are eligible for adoption through the Humane Society of Harrison County WV. You can apply at hshcwv.org. Each of these dogs could be euthanized at any given time due to spacing issues. They are currently at Harrison County Animal Control. We also transfer to 501(c)3 no-kill nonprofit rescues. We have limited information on these dogs, if you’re interested you’re welcome to come down and meet them between 10am-4pm, M-F. Saturday, 10am-3pm. 1.
