Built-in 1914 and expanded in 1931, this architectural gem introduced Morgantown to 20th-century design. It was the first federal building and post office owned by the U.S. government in the city. Today is the culmination of three years of hard work that began with myself, Delegate John Williams, and Attorney Simonton. Of course, so many more people helped us along the way, but these guys didn't bat an eye three years ago, during COVID and my first months in office, when I brought this idea for economic development to them. It seems like such a small thing (sometimes even counterintuitive)- being able to carry a beverage out of an establishment and legally walk around. But what it does is it brings more people to our downtown and encourages them to pass additional time there. While there, sure, they're likely to spend a few more dollars, but even just having more people downtown on the sidewalks strolling around will be a huge deal. This is clearly no "silver bullet" for our downtown issues but it is one piece of a much larger puzzle that I'm working on with so many others to improve things. This isn't about alcohol; it's about making downtown Morgantown more vibrant and setting it apart from other areas. If we want to change the trajectory of downtown, we have to be willing to innovate and try new things. Cities in other states have been doing this for years. Other cities in WV such as Charleston and Huntington have also already been taking advantage of this program (since its initial state passage last year) with great success. Morgantown didn't rush into it; we took our time through several legislative sessions to make sure it was a good fit for us and I'm excited to now kick it off here at home!
