JH Campbell Yard When unit coal trains arrive from the Powder River Basin in the state of Wyoming, CSX sets the train into the power plant yard. Consumers Energy has their own switch crews that move the loaded hoppers through the rotary dump facility. Consumer’s Energy largest coal-fired station, The Campbell complex, has three separate generating units. It is Consumers Energy’s largest coal-fired generating location in the state rated at 1,450MW total. It produces enough electricity for a city of 1 million and burning about 6 million tons of coal annually, all delivered by rail, from Wyoming. JHC uses an average 8 or 9 trains per week. J.H. Campbell buys low sulfur coal from mines in Wyoming. The Powder River Basin (PRB) coal for Campbell is produced more than 1100 miles from the station, and the Chicago area interchange between CSXT and BNSF is approximately 170 miles away. In 2021, Consumers Energy announced to speed up the retirement of all 3 units of the Campbell Generating Plant closure to 2025. The CSX Grand Rapids Sub ends at Porter, Indiana. Trackage rights have always been used west of Porter on the former New York Central line, as far as Pine Jct. where it moves back to the former B&O. Picture This; CSX 911 leads the way for M693 southbound out of Kingsport in the evening sunlight. What made this encounter even more special, however, was the Kingsport Fire Department, who brought their truck out for the shot. 911 is one of three units in CSX’s Pride In Service series, it’s red and white color scheme corresponding with the fire department.
