My clients are incredible go-getters. They are absolutely powerful when it comes to navigating their careers, juggling their home life and getting shit done. So it was surprising to me that at the recent Wine Down Wednesday event that I ran, that the simple act of sitting with their feelings seemed like a foreign concept. One of my beautiful clients' actually said, “I just never thought of tuning into what’s going on inside my body when these thoughts come up.” We're trained to focus on the mind, but 80% of your communication comes from your GUT to your BRAIN! Which brings me to the concept of INTEROCEPTION. Interoception is the sense that provides information about the internal state of your body. Think of it like your body's internal GPS system. The more you tune to it, the more it will lead you to where you WANT to be. You don't need a rock bottom moment to quit drinking. You can simply decide a new path is for you and start walking. It might be that alcohol is taking away more than it's giving you. That's how I felt. Alcohol was making me anxious and exhausted. It was robbing me of confidence and motivation. There wasn't a rock bottom moment. There were many small moments that all added up to making the decision to quit, for good. Here are the first 3 steps on that path... 1. Think of your Why. Your reason for quitting. It might be to improve your health, relationships, your mental health. Your Why is something you'll come back to again and again on your sober journey. 2. Have a plan. Don't do this alone. Join a sober support group online (You can join mine - The Women's Wellbeing Collective or The Midlife Hub). If you're ready, ask family and friends for their support. Start putting your sobriety first. 3. Make it easier. Stock up on AF drinks (keep the ritual, change the ingredient). Plan what you'll do on Friday night (that's often the hardest night!). Get out of events that make you feel wobbly. Most of all, be understanding and compassionate with yourself. This can be hard! So, go gently with yourself. Then, give sobriety enough time for you to truly feel the benefits. That can take 30 days. By then you should be feeling clear, energised, have less anxiety, be sleeping better, and generally feeling better in yourself (no shame or hangxiety!). Don't ever feel alone in quitting drinking. I think it takes a village. The sober community is that village! I'd love to support you. The elephant in the fitness room We can have as many trophies, sparkly bikinis, tan, likes & follows as we want But the reality is the impact the fitness industry is having on women’s health is huge We’re pretending it’s not there, then spending years in silence trying to rectify it That used to be me & I see it happening on a daily basis 3 things I was doing that you may be doing too or feel like you’re supposed to doing that are wreaking havoc on your hormonal health 1. Low levels of body fat for prolonged periods I lost my period every time I competed and I'd have a low % of body fat year round The perception is lower body fat = achievement / admiration / aspiration But with female hormonal health, there’s nothing to celebrate Your S£% hormones are literally made from cholesterol Your body fat is a source of oestrogen Low body fat levels also cause hypothalamic amenorrhea (i.e. your periods stop) Switching off ovulation & menstruation You deserve to thrive, not survive Your period has SO many health benefits, losing it from low body fat isn't something to celebrate 2. Low Carb Diets I’d repeatedly follow excessively low carb diets, especially in my early days of comps As well as doing nothing for your mood, low-carb diets can disrupt the production of many hormones, including LH, FSH, oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone & leptin Throughout a 5 year period of competing I lost my cycle more than 4/5 times, always when my carb intake was below what my body needed, oh hey there disruption Just like low body fat levels, low carb intake can also lead to HA 3. Excessive consumption of poor quality meat Hinders the function of your liver, your ‘woman’s organ’ in TCM, which metabolises toxins & eliminates excess hormones helping to keep your hormones in balance Poor quality meat is full of synthetic hormones and antibiotics stopping your liver from doing its job These 3 things are incredibly common in the fitness industry With women battling hormonal issues in silence for years after It doesn’t has to be like this, there's so much you can do and you can get there much quicker than I did I would love to help you Just drop me a DM

Mummy Wine Culture is normalised, justified, and celebrated with special Mother’s Day offers that all appear to come with a glass of bubbles. 🥹🥹🥹 Arrggh!! Some facts, before we let Big Alcohol sell us any more Mummy Wine Culture products this Mother's Day... * Over the past 30 years alcohol use disorder in women has increased 84%. * Alcohol use disorder is defined as drinking 14 or more units of alcohol a week (roughly equivalent to just over a bottle of wine). * Girls who grow up watching mums use wine to take the edge off daily stresses with wine are 4 times more likely to develop alcohol use disorder. * Studies show ONLY 20% of women are aware of the connection between alcohol and the increased risk of breast cancer. * 3 or more drinks a week increases the risk of breast cancer by 15%. All I want for mums is just to ask themselves - is alcohol helping me or hurting me? Sure, it'll take the edge off stress but it spikes cortisol and makes stress WORSE. Along with anxiety. You don't need a rock bottom moment to quit alcohol. You can just know that it's taking more from you than it's giving back. Alcohol is a coping strategy for avoiding so many uncomfortable emotions or big events in life. For grey area drinkers, alcohol almost always shows up as an escape of some kind. We drink to become numb. The problem is that our emotions are there for a reason. If we don't allow them to have their space and voice, they'll come back to bite us, big time. Here are the 7 main masks: Loneliness Sadness Social anxiety/ shyness Stress Anger Boredom Hormones I've been guilty of using alcohol to mask MANY of these, over and over. Can you relate? The first step is to simply identify what you are masking and start to get curious, do the deeper, self-inquiry work. Is your stress impacting your health? 7 years ago stress had a massive impact on my health and I wound up in hospital not an experience I ever want to repeat. So what happened? Well, I worked too much, I didn’t put in enough boundaries, peri menopause had kicked off big time, my hormones had gone haywire and my immune system was on the floor. I ignored all these message from my body until it literally said no and I had no choice but to stop. Believe me, I know how hard it is to make changes when you are stuck in that stress cycle. You are either in:- FIGHT when you are ready to fight the tiger or your husband/Kids! FLIGHT booking that holiday, dreaming of running off to a retreat, leaving your job or just so busy being busy that you block out everything else. FREEZE – Can look like procrastination when you are constantly thinking about what you need to do but never starting or feeling paralysed. Things can get so bad you can go into the lesser know FAWN RESPONSE. FAWN Client’s often describe this as feeling numb or flat where you have become dissociated. Stress isn’t always a bad thing and a little bit of stress can help with motivation but when stress is high for extended periods it can lead to autoimmune issues, mental health difficulties and burnout. Staying grounded without forcing situations, things and people to be anything else then they truly are. Disciplined yet aware of what needs to be held and what deserves to be let go of in order to live in a state of flow✨ I used to be such a control freak, almost fearful of change and uncertainty. 100 people can tell you that you can't control any outcome so you may as well be relaxed about it. But you need to embody that yourself, find peace security and trust within yourself that whatever the outcome, you can handle that. Like a strongly rooted tree that will survive any storm. Only that way you can find peace with the forever uncertainty of tomorrow. Living in flow, allowing life to surprise me, that's where my happiness lies. I used to have ZERO resilience. I would turn to wine to block out everything. I would use wine to block out work stress, life stress, feelings of unworthiness, boredom, even anxiety. Are you sober curious? Here are 5 things you need to know, and they may surprise you... 1. Triggers are EVERYWHERE and they are powerful. If you are going alcohol-free, try to avoid the people and events that trigger you to drink. At least in the early days! Plus, triggers are sneaky. They are often feelings such as boredom. Plan what you will do when you are bored. 2. You may feel all the FEELINGS. This is normal and natural. They will come up. You may feel anger and sadness. Be gentle with yourself and ask for support. 3. You'll need EXTRA self-care. Put taking care of your emotional and mental wellbeing at the top of your To Do list. Find healthy ways to relax and make your own kind of self-care part of your sober curious lifestyle. 4. Don't go it alone! You'll have 95% more chance of success if you go alcohol-free as part of a group. So, buddy up! 5. Give yourself a break and remember there is no 'perfect' path here. If you slip up, learn from it, and quickly move on. What does your heart say? If you are feeling overwhelmed because you just DON'T KNOW right now... Check-in with yourself... Create awareness around which part of you you are asking this question to? If your mind is running overtime, it's normal that you experience difficulties getting clear answers from yourself. Perhaps you have 15 tabs open at once. (I know I definitely do on busy days) You may want to turn inwards and ask your heart in stead 💕 often when your mind doesn't know your heart will hold a very clear and calm answer for you. I love this ritual that you can add either to a meditation or feel through on it's own: Put some music on that helps you soften into your body, soften the volume of your thoughts, soften your self judgement of not knowing an answer. Music that helps you feel loved. Place your hands on your heart, preferable skin to skin contact, so you can feel your heart beat, remember you are alive, you are human, you are so much more than thoughts 💭 and doing the best you can! Connect to your breathe and following it into your body creating awareness in your chest, heart center, belly, hips. However deep you can practice these full body breaths. Once you are starting to calm down, feel safe, embracing the long deep breathing, place the attention on your heart and lovingly ask for advice. Be ready to receive with 0 judgement or expectations. You may not receive what you are initially looking for, but in stead feel a sensation, an intuitive thought, or nothing at all until later that day or the next day when the "Ahaa moment" arrives. Always try to end with some level of gratitude, even if it's a simple thank you, a self hug, a little love squeeze. Do you suspect alcohol is making symptoms of menopause WORSE? 🥹🥹🥹 You'd be right! Drinking has a dramatic impact on menopause. Your mood is worse, hangovers are more severe and your sleep is all over the place. Let's look at why... Simply, it's this: As we get older, women have smaller amounts of alcohol dehydrogenase, an enzyme that metabolises alcohol in the stomach. That means women absorb more alcohol (than men) into their bloodstream... Symptoms of menopause are then exacerbated like hot flashes, mood swings and insomnia. Dehydration from drinking also makes makes hangovers feel worse during menopause because women are naturally starting to lose water volume as we age. That "fuzzy head" feeling that menopause brings is made worse by alcohol as it's linked to pathological changes in the brain including impaired memory. Hot flashes? Well, alcohol makes them worse because it causes dilation of blood vessels which can even TRIGGER hot flashes. Finally, sleep... As the liver tries to break down alcohol through the night, many women during menopause will wake up at 3am feeling dehydrated and struggle to stay asleep. Because of night sweats and hot flashes, sleep is even more disrupted. Menopause and alcohol don't mix. We forget this, right? Women so often blame themselves when their drinking feels problematic. We believe we are weak, hopeless, can't-get-it-together, when it comes to drinking. Alcohol is among the top 5 most addictive substances on earth. Alcohol is also brilliantly marketed to women as self-care. What a battle that combination is! I know firsthand the impact of suppressing negative emotions, so I created something to address it. Release was ready in December, but for some reason, I had a resistance to share. I sat with that resistance till I was able to get to the bottom of it, tend to what my heart, spirit and body were asking and then release it. Today and I am pleased and honoured to share my new work with you. Release is a wellness journal that aims to facilitate the safe processing of negative emotions, foster deeper self-connection, and highlight unhelpful thoughts and feelings. It draws on my experiences as a mum and a doctoral student, my work with other mums, as well as my ongoing PhD research with the mothers of children with disabilities. Release uses a six-step approach grounded in positive psychology to help you carry out an emotional check, identify the triggers behind negative emotions, recognise and reframe your experiences, and develop an action plan. Breath & Brunch was so lovely at the weekend. Another great Breathe & Brunch event. These are great for unwinding, switching off and connecting with others. Is alcohol holding you back from the life you want? It held me back FOR YEARS. I felt like my life was dull, I was dull. I couldn't quite achieve my goals because I didn't have the clarity, energy and self-love to make it happen. HERE ARE SOME SIGNS that might feel familiar to you too... * I always had plans to get super fit and lose extra weight BUT hangovers, feeling unmotivated, and generally exhausted often derailed my plans. * I wanted to feel calm and confident but constant drinking made me feel anxious, full of shame, regret, guilt and self-doubt. * I could feel I had the potential for more in my career but I was stuck. I just didn't have the energy and confidence to take bold leaps and make it happen. * I wanted to be more present with my kids but I was always rushing bedtime so I could get to wine-time (I really hate admitting that)... All of these were signs that alcohol was holding me back from the life I wanted. Removing alcohol changed everything. It gave me the energy, clarity, self-belief and confidence I NEEDED to live the life I wanted. The life I'm so grateful to have now. Is alcohol holding you back from the life you want?
