British artist Salma Zulfiqar’s film ‘Migration Blanket’ is set to premiere in Venice, Italy in the attendance of HRH Princess Esmeralda of Belgium on April 23 this year. The film is based on the effects of climate change on women’s lives leading them to marry early and being unable to get a good education. It features Zulfiqar’s artwork along with over 400 pieces of art, handmade by over 150 women in 17 countries which were created in ARTconnects workshops organised by Zulfiqar. Shofika, a Rohingya refugee and a participant who features in the 25-minute long film and campaigns against climate change talked about the tough times she had to face back in her country due to floods and that climate change was responsible for destroying her house and in her not being able to attend school. The movie intends to inform the audience about the dire consequences of climate change and will also be showcased at the Commonwealth Games in the UK. It makes Zulfiqar the first British Pakistani to hold an exhibition at the reputable Venice art show. When I walked the streets of Venice some two weeks ago, I came across the exhibition „Alice in Doomedland“. Admiring the architecture of this beautiful town, I did not even realize that I walked into the little reception room when I passed the Palazzo Bonvicini. I was totally absorbed it seems - almost like Alice as she falls through a hole into a completely new world. Swept from the crowded alley I found myself in the calm of the house of the @fondationvalmont. In one room there were carpets and (scented) cushions where you could lie down and read the projections on the ceiling: Who am I ? I know who I was. But I don‘t know what I‘ll become. So who am I now? These questions I believe everyone asks themselves in their late teenage years - but they are also questions actors have to ask themselves as the figure they impersonate. I remember when I was 18, still struggling to find my place in the world, it was so difficult for me to come back to my own me after playing, let‘s say, Laura. I immersed in her world and almost became as fragile as glass, as fragile as I imagined her. The show covers the artist’s life works from the 60’s to his death, the astounding works include writings and signs from the streets of Rome, sunsets and roses. The mediums used by Kounellis range from concrete, to natural elements, including birds, steel, cacti, coal, cotton and fire. The artist also explore the sound dimension. Already in 1960’s Kounelis began chanting his poems on canvas. He also investigated the olfactory dimension beginning in 1969 with coffee and later on elements like grappa in order to escape the illusory limits of the painting and join with the virtual chaos of reality. The exhibition boasts large-scale installations realized from the end of the 80’s and they are enriched by a fantastic variety of objects and materials from musical instruments to sacks, from plaster casts to stone, from mechanical gears to fragment of furniture. I recommend the exhibition catalogue!

Another day at Venice Biennale, this time at Arsenale, another massive site dedicated to hundreds of the most contemporary artists from all around the world. Many of the exhibits were interactive or video installations that were engaging and thought provoking. It’s often artists who have the courage to speak up and express some of the difficult world issues so that everyone can relate to their work and hopefully it brings united attention to a call for action. . . . . .
