Kounellis often included clothing, such as hats, coats and shoes in his work, which often seems to evoke ghostly presences. In this untitled work, a pair of worn shoes - lived-in objects-speak to the human condition. The artist often wore shoes until their soles were worn out. Shoes refer to endless wandering, a recurring metaphor in culture and literature. The layers of lead footprints under the soles allude to the path Kounellis forged and to memories imprinted during his life. The weight of the lead symbolizes the heavy burden of the human condition. The use of bourgeois clothing references the literary image of the 19th-century middle-class man whose crisis represents the modern social and political tragedy, as in Bertolt Brecht’s plays.

I cavalli non sono i primi animali che Jannis Kounellis utilizza nel proprio lavoro: nel 1967, presso la galleria romana “L’Attico” di Fabio Sargentini, l’artista decide di esporre un pappagallo vivo e, a fargli da sfondo, una lastra di metallo. Nello stesso anno Kounellis realizza “Margherita di fuoco”, un’installazione che consiste in un fiore di metallo al cui centro, grazie a una bombola a gas, si sprigiona una fiamma blu. L’avvicinamento al movimento dell’arte povera lo porta in questo periodo a utilizzare materiali sempre più semplici e umili, come le pietre con cui nel 1969, a San Benedetto del Tronto, sigilla l’ingresso allo spazio espositivo per impedirne l’accesso, o come i sacchi di iuta che, lo stesso anno, presenta in occasione della celebre mostra “When Attitudes Become Form”, curata da Harald Szeemann. Nel 1972, Kounellis viene nuovamente coinvolto da Szeemann in occasione di “Documenta V”, dove presenta la performance “Da inventare sul posto”, in cui rifiuta contemporaneamente il ruolo di partecipante e di autore dell’opera. Accanto a un grande dipinto astratto, le cui pennellate riportano un passaggio di una partitura di Stravinsky, ci sono un violinista e una ballerina. Mentre il violinista suona una breve sequenza musicale, la ballerina improvvisa una coreografia “sul momento”. Un’altra famosa performance di Kounellis è quella realizzata alla galleria “La Salita” di Roma nel 1973, dove lo stesso artista, con il volto coperto da una maschera raffigurante il dio greco Apollo, è circondato da frammenti di una scultura apparentemente antica, accanto a lui ci sono poi un corvo nero impagliato e un musicista che suona al flauto una melodia di Mozart. Nel 1995, Kounellis realizza per il cortile dell’Università di Padova, in occasione del 50esimo anniversario della Resistenza italiana, un’installazione pubblica dal significato fortemente politico: si tratta del “Monumento alla memoria di Concetto Marchesi, Egidio Meneghetti ed Ezio Franceschini”, anche conosciuto come “Resistenza e Liberazione”. #janniskounellis #artecontemporanea #artepovera

The next chapter of Xiella’s exhibition continues with a work by Jannis Kounellis (1936 –2017). ‘Albatros’ is a multi-part installation featuring fragments of an old fishing vessel from Fiumicino. Weathered by rough seas and strong winds, marked and corroded by the ocean’s saltwater, it bears the age of time and an anarchic beauty. Originally dismantled and installed at the Gropius Bau in 1991 for Joachimides and Rosenthal’s ‘Metropolis,’ it was further fragmented for Kewenig at Haus Bitz in 2001. Recently, it has been exhibited at the retrospective Jannis Kounellis In Six Acts at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and Museo Jumex, Ciudad de México; embodying Kounellis’ soul through and through. During my trip to Rome, Venice and Bologna the most impressing contemporary artworks I have encountered were not in the Venice Biennale, which has grown too big for me. In the Maxxi museum (architecture by Zaha Hadid) in Rome (until 26.5.2024) there is an beautiful installation, Night, of three of Jannis Kounellis’ works curated by Luigia Lonardelli. The result is a space altering wholeness, which is in the borderline between painting, sign, stage set and performance. On certain occasions (which I was lucky to be present on) a pianist plays a slowed down version of Verdi’s Va Pensiero aria. To quote Kounellis: “But I am a painter, and I claim my initiation into painting. Jannis Kounellis Untitled 1960 Polyvinyl acetate paint and tempera on canvas This painting is part of a series of canvases known as ‘Figures and Letters’ or ‘Alfabeti’ ‘alphabets’), made between 1959 and 1963. Kounellis painted them on large pieces of canvas, burlap or bedsheets he’d stretched across the walls of his house, like a mural. Initially he reproduced details of hand-made signs found around the city, such as placards from local shops. Here, the symbols suggest a code or mathematical formula but ultimately carry no decipherable meaning. Na imagem podemos ver imagens da obra de Catarina Simão “Ntimbe Caetano”, série "The Mozambique Archive" | 2016 Catarina Simão tem trabalhado sobretudo com arquivos relacionados com a história da independência e luta anticoloniais moçambicanas. O vídeo “Ntimbe Caetano”, decorre dessa pesquisa aprofundada e desenvolve-se a partir de material encontrado nos arquivos da história política da Frente de Libertação de Moçambique. O título do trabalho cita o título de uma canção do grupo étnico maconde (“Vamos esmagar Caetano”), a qual fez parte do processo de engajamento desta comunidade contra os atos de terror praticados pelo regime fascista português, envolvendo denúncias e execuções aleatórias. London. Tate Modern Museum. The first gallery, of the many many galleries in the Tate, was given over to the work of Jannis Kounellis, one of the key figures in the 1960’s arte povera (“poor art”) movement in Italy. Kounellis turns familiar materials, charged with history and meaning, into poetic assemblages. “Artists associated with arte povera used ordinary materials of both natural and industrial origins and hoped to bring the experience of art closer to everyday life. At the time, Italy was undergoing a period of rapid social change, torn between industrial and agrarian life, tradition and innovation, antiquity and modernity. Kounellis’s works express this clash of values by bringing together contrasting elements such as raw wood and steel beams, or strings of colourful glass hanging next to a mound of black coal. His early paintings were inspired by words and graphics found in street signs, which he gradually reduced to letters, numbers and basic symbols arranged over plain backgrounds. Though he soon expanded his practice to include performance and sculpture, he considered himself primarily a painter.
