European elections The fact that the achievements of our democracy and freedom cannot be taken for granted is being felt by more and more people, including in Germany. Thirty years ago, the artist Hermann Josef Hack coined the slogan FREEDOM MAKES WORK in a positive reversal of the slogan cynically misused by the criminals of the Nazi regime, which humiliated their prisoners above the entrances to the concentration camps. Under the initiative and guidance of the painter Hack, 35 first-time voters from Lohmar grammar school created two large formats on the subject. The pupils, who were able to express themselves for the first time on huge truck tarpaulins, experienced the joys of freedom through their own painting; the motto they chose above the symbolic gateway to Europe reads: UNITY - RIGHTEOUSNESS - FREEDOM. The teachers involved, Daya Eden, Nevin Schönhöfer and Andrea Duyster, were also pleasantly surprised at how intensively and creatively they worked together over three days to produce two pictures worth seeing. „The project really made us aware of the importance of freedom in the context of the upcoming elections. It was a great experience to develop a visual language freely and informally together with others in order to get others interested in the topic,“ says Paul Pieniak (19). For his classmate Alexiana Wheeler (17), the art project was „the experience of a special freedom that art offers and that must be defended at all costs.“

Come discover the exhibition 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗶ć / 𝗢𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗿 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗼. 𝗝𝗔𝗭𝗭. with our art educators next Thursday, May 9 at 5:30 pm. Rene Matić and Oscar Murillo share a spontaneous and improvised artistic approach. In a cultural context that seeks to classify everything and everyone, the artists have carved out an autonomous space for novel, non-continuous modes of thinking – like frequencies of identity. Join the free guided tour; it will be held in German. No registration required. -- Installation view: Rene Matić / Oscar Murillo. This is the work of Oscar Murillo, seen on our visit to @sfmoma last month. Murillo uses sewn canvas "as a flexible medium to experiment with strategies that contextualise communities". These canvases, entitled 'for the souls of the rotten mighty' (2016- 2023) were bought in Korea; later worked upon with 'mudang' Kim Ju Young, exposed to shamanic 'gut' rituals, then taken to the Samseong Mountain sacred woods as anoited canvases before entering the museum. Here, in the museum their energies can be experienced by the viewer. (Text paraphrased from exhibition panel). Canvases, cut with gaping holes can perhaps suggest apertures into other environments. I imagine the fleeting landscapes we passed on our NZ-Fiji-San Fran trip and am reminded of the places and people we briefly encountered. Rene Matić’s installation "60 and 25, alive", consists of 25 bronze figures representing every year of the artist’s life and 60 found crosses, for every year of their father’s. These artifacts and symbols of faith intersect with the British skinhead culture: the artist’s father was a skinhead in his youth, finding a sense of belonging as a Black man in a predominantly white environment. The artist here uses the crucified skinhead to oppose the right-wing co-option of this symbol and movement. Crucifixion renders a body powerless, taking life from that body, while simultaneously standing as a signifier for life. For Matić, the crucified body symbolizes death, birth, reinvention, and liberty. Catholicism and faith play a prominent role in the artist’s work. “60 and 25, alive” documents Matić’s personal journey to find their place within skinhead subculture, exploring their ancestry and its significance to their identity, but also acts as a tool to further examine the artist’s experience of living in the Black British diaspora. Subcultures such as this one can provide hope for marginalized people — providing space for imagination and a source of power.
