Trigger Warning: Dog Attack⛔️ On Friday 4/26/24, Bambam and I were walking our regular walk heading home and out of nowhere a dog came flying out of a garage and attacked Bambam. This was unprovoked, we didn’t know the dog was there until it came running out of the garage. This dog was off leash, didn’t have a collar on. Despite his size, Bambam didn’t know what to do and stood in confusion. I didn’t know what to do except be loud (yelling NO, OFF) and to try to create physical space in bw BamBam and this other dog. Unsuccessful. The dog kept coming, lunging, snapping jaws. I covered BamBam’s body to protect him and fell on the ground as this dog kept going for him and now me. In what felt like slow motion, the dog’s owners eventually came over and had to physically lift their dog up to get him off Bambam. This dog went for his back end, and both of his sides and was still going as his owners picked him up. I think the fact that Bambam has a thick double coat provided protection. It was scary and thankfully, he is OK, no wounds.🙏 I reached out to @patronk9academy dog trainers (highly recommend) where Bambam went for training as a puppy to seek their advice in this situation. BamBam is too big to pick up. Other options in these situations are water with a spray bottle, compressed air to make a loud noise, or a whistle. This picture was taken shortly after by my neighbor who witnessed this. Thankfully Bambam is fine and back to his happy sweet self. Please. Reminder to stay alert and be careful. We were lucky. "In the spring of 2023, I gained a new appreciation for the gift of breathing. Over a period of weeks, I grew increasingly short of breath. As I was misdiagnosed twice, first with allergy-induced asthma and then bronchitis, I struggled more and more to breathe during everyday activities. After several weeks, I was so short of breath that I couldn’t walk from one room to another without stopping to gasp for air, my heart pounding. Finally I grew terrified enough that I knew I needed to go to the emergency room, where I was diagnosed with multiple blood clots in both lungs. Once I got the correct diagnosis, I received excellent treatment from a vascular surgeon (EKOS procedure) that improved my breathing almost immediately. After several days in the hospital, I was discharged from the hospital with a rivaroxaban prescription and a few pages of printed information about compression socks and risks associated with my new medication. In the weeks following my hospitalization, as I came to understand the seriousness of my condition, I wondered why I had known nothing about pulmonary emboli, which are not rare and are often fatal. How could I not have been aware of such a dangerous condition? How could medical professionals not have checked for this condition when I went to urgent care twice with one of the most common symptoms, shortness of breath?" "I started experiencing pain in my left calf and by morning the next day, I was in excruciating pain. I called my doctor’s office and they asked me to come in as soon as possible. After the D-dimer bloodwork results showed I likely had a clot, I received a Doppler scan that revealed the DVT. I was prescribed the blood thinner rivaroxaban for the following months. Then I received another Doppler scan six months following my diagnosis that showed the clot was gone. I also received further testing for clotting factors that yielded negative results. The cause of my blood clot was never determined. I have learned so much about blood clots that I never knew before my diagnosis. The NBCA patient resources have been very helpful along with the Facebook support group. My advice to others is to please listen to your body. If you feel something isn’t right, get checked out." "I woke up one morning with back pain. I live an active and healthy lifestyle, so I figured I pulled a muscle working out the day prior. I took some ibuprofen and went about my morning. The pain continued to get worse, and eventually wrapped around my right flank up into my right chest and neck. The pain increased with breathing, so I went to urgent care. They took a urine sample to rule out kidney stones and conducted a CT without contrast. The diagnosis was atypical pneumonia as they found something in my lung on the CT. I had a hard time accepting this diagnosis, as I had no symptoms of pneumonia. I basically laughed it off and was sent home with antibiotics. The pain continued to get worse. I went back to urgent care the next day and they were ready to send me home again. I just couldn’t accept this odd diagnosis! I knew something was seriously wrong, so I pushed to get another CT done, but with contrast. This time, they told me that I needed to go to the ER because I had blood clots and an infarction in my lung. That’s what caused the intense pain. I had no risk factors. I’m a non-smoker, I’ve never had surgery, and hadn’t recently had long periods of immobility. I don’t have a personal or family history of blood clots. I was on birth control, but it wasn’t estrogen-based. After three days at the ER being pumped full of every pain medication available, I finally went home. My doctor did more testing after I completed my blood thinner course to determine if I had any clotting disorders. My results showed no remarkable numbers, meaning my PE was likely a fluke (”unprovoked”). They said it’s common to not find a cause for clots, which is disheartening. I learned that I have no known predisposition or disorder that led to the PE. However, I would love to have an answer as to why it happened." Remembering the first time I saw the Clash - 45 years ago today at Wolverhampton Civic 20th December 1978. The Sort it Out tour with the Slits & the Innocents supporting. Possibly Budgie’s first or second gig drumming for the Slits. Heavy snow, sliding buses, a snowball fight outside the venue & the Clash charging onto stage like their lives depended on playing fast & furious - the absolute best gig I saw them play. Quite an eventful show too. Lots of fighting on the dance floor between rival gangs of punks mostly. Joe stopped the set at least once to encourage people to finish it off outside after the show. Mick was particularly irate with someone who managed to gob down his throat and “hoped he’d wake up in the hospital bed with hepatitis next to the person who did it”. The words Unprovoked Retaliation sewn into the famous flag backdrop. I walked most of the way home in a sweat soaked T shirt and ripped mohair coz the buses were snowbound. I’m ‘modelling’ a repro version of the shirt I bought at the gig & wore to death. I’ve known them all for so long, far and near, and admire all for their incredible achievements. But what I cherish most is their simplicity, authenticity and humanity. It’s been a few years now, but everytime I see them my heart bursts with joy and my belly aches with laughter. This, possibly our last get together for 2023 (not easy herding these Tswana, Zulu, Swati, Tsonga and Xhosa cats) was just as special. Our friend @lincolnmali_ and his amazing wife @svavavush and her sister Mbali hosted one for the ages. Lincoln needs his own standup show. Nje. Everyone around this group is worth celebrating. But this night we celebrated our inspirational sister @siskhanyimlambo who has run marathons and climbed ultra mountains worldwide, started her career as an architect, built a reputation a marketer, just earned her honours in psychology and just joined Cambridge University as a Senior Fellow in Sustainability. Naturally, she cried a bucket. We never have enough tissues for our official crier. What a standard she’s set for the rest of us. But as always, our night was all about laughter. Always. My life revolves around happiness and laughter, but I doubt I have ever laughed so hard in a while. After three plates of @sva’s delicious madombolo, inyama and that cake ya ka Khanyi (his excuse was that he’s carbo loading), I hope our Barry made it to his 6am start marathon. And we still have to bring Sim up to date with what’s been happening while he’s been milking cows in the Eastern Cape. But then maybe it spares him from the mess we’re in around here. As always @andisantsubane tried to mess up a good story with an intellectual perspective and facts. We would have none of it. What a way to end the year for this #unprovoked humans.
