Something always goes wrong. A colleague and I were talking about weddings last night and how they're never perfect. The example he gave me (this is rather extreme) was that the father of the bride fell down a ditch the night before the wedding walking home after some pre-event celebrations. No one found him for a couple of hours, and when they did, he had a broken hip among other very serious injuries. He was DETERMINED to walk his girl down the aisle. He checked himself out with pain killers and still somehow walked her down the aisle. Then promptly off for a hip replacement!!!! For my wedding, which is probably more the norm, only a few minor things didn't go as planned. The music didn't work at first, the flowers weren't quite what I'd ordered for the bridesmaids, some minor family drama, and a few other things like that. But those things didn'tmatter to me. The main thing to me was the people coming together and having a good time. If you're planning a special day and want things to go as you planned, please change your mindset. It will only set you up for stress! Instead, just try to remember you're not there for anyone but you and that special person, and celebrating that union can be as simple as enjoying a sunset together. The best advice I've ever been given ⏬️ We always spend time thinking if only I had done x/y/z. Or.. what if I try it and it doesn't pan out and then I WISH I'd done x/y/z. I've been there, you've been there. It's the human condition. But if we stay there it's NOT the good place. The best advice I ever got was when I was trying to decide to go to university or not. My wonderful stepdad said to me: It doesn't matter if you succeed or fail doing your best. It doesn't matter if you try it and decide it isn't for you. Because you're still learning about yourself each step of the way. It's the journey and what you learn along the way that matters - not whether it was the right call. I don't think he realised what an impact that advice had on me for the long term. It's releasing. It gives you the 'let's try and see' curiosity about your life. We tried out FIVE Don't ever think I'm not the collaborative type. I absolutely relish it. My day job is collaborative, so it's just a way of life for me - so I'm your girl if having input to your final piece is important to you. The details matter To me at least! Good things come in small packages and all that. This is my smallest standard frame available, and I've packed in all the details to get as much value as possible. She cried when she saw it... This piece was a special commission for my mum. Usually I'm given a bouquet that I preserve for someone. But this commission I didn't. I've spent the past year collecting flowers I know my mum would love so I could create this piece for her. Things you don't usually get in a bouquet like pansies. More than the flower types though, it was the feeling that needed to be achieved. Even when it's my mum, collaboration during the design process is important to me so I can make sure the people I work with get an outcome they love. I'm not gonna lie - it was hard at times! But that makes the victorious outcome even more meaningful. In all honesty, I adore this one. It hits the spot for me not just visually but emotionally too. Nothing is more satisfying for me than knowing the person I've created for is thrilled. When she first saw it in person she was so happy she cried, which is definitely success in my mind! The language of flowers This is a very old little book that my mothers 'Lala' (my great grandmother) gave to her when she was young. The note says: "This little book is 100 years old. It was my mother's. I thought you might like to have it to put amongst your treasures. If not, never mind, as we can give it to someone else, can't we? I remember, when we were children, we used to love to find out a flowers name's meaning and tease each other at school." I love old things, and this little book which is the size of a business card is now amongst MY treasures. Your florist does what?! To create any of my art, I need to carefully pull apart the bouquets I'm given. Each one is a reflection of the talented florist that's created it. I have done some training in floristry, and I can say hand on heart the artform requires so many skills you wouldn't believe: - strength: holding a bunch of steadily growing flowers while you create the perfect bunch - technique: stems are placed in a spiral to enable flowers to easily be pulled in or out, or replaced if necessary. - attention to detail: this kind of speaks for itself. - flexed flowers: the artform of opening a bloom to show a different side. - wiring: the art of reinforcing blooms with wires if necessary. This is more commonly used in everlasting bouthese days. - colour theory: how to make those colours shine and how to place them so your bouquet has movement and richness - knowledge: how to make flowers last on your special day with species choice and using sustainable practices instead of easy tools. - understanding: knowing what your flowers will encounter on your day, making it easy for you to know how to hold your flowers, and knowing how to protect your delicate dress from the stems or particular pollens. Why Summer is my season... Summer is allegedly upon us and I have to say, I desperately want a proper one this year please. Last year in NZ the Auckland Summer was non existent. We've had over a year of rain, and while I love it for the plants, I don't love it for me. Summer is really important to me. It's when I truly relax. When I connect with parts of the world I've been waiting for all year: the beach, particular plants in my garden, particular flowers that are in season to press. But what flowers stay blue? Flowers changing colour as part of the preservation process can give some interesting surprises! Some flowers don't stay blue, and go a mauve colour instead. And some flowers start out maroon or something else and TURN blue. All one flower? You're not limited to a blob looking all the same if you have all one flower type to preserve. Your artist knows the tricks to give variety and movement, be that through the way flowers are pressed or arranged. Roses are a great example: they can be pressed for side on. Front closed and front open views. If there are any leaves, this can make a huge difference too. They can create contrast and break the space between blooms. Can you spot the hidden mementos? Sometimes I'm asked to include more than just flowers into my artwork. This piece was extra special. It wasn't just because the flowers were a recreation from the wedding held in Singapore. It includes two very special photos of missed love ones. What's the difference between 'Pressed' and '3D' flower preservation? The photos in this post are flowers from the brides bouquet preserved two ways. This was done from her single bouquet, and we were able to do a Medium size frame in each preservation style. It's the perfect way to show you the difference with the same flowers. So what's the difference?: PRESSED This is the first set of photos. Flowers are flattened while dried. Often their shape is distorted in this process and the outcome is more artistic. Petals are reconstructed into the likeness of the flowers. There is no or minimal gap between glass and the back of the frame. 3D This is the second set of photos. Flowers are dried in silica, hung or shape dried (depending on the best technique for the flower). The shape of the flower is very close to how it looked fresh, however some shrinkage does occur. There is a large gap between the glass and the back of the frame so flowers can retain their natural shape. This is limited, so sometimes they touch the glass. Which would you choose? Avoid floral foam and plastic wherever you can. Ask your florist how they avoid working with these materials. 2. Keep it local. Minimising waste where possible and composting/recycling anything that can't be avoided. 4. Conserving water. Things I have learned in this job🥀 If you didn't realise it, this isn't my full-time job. I call this my "passion business," and I do it part-time around my 9-5. So what are the things I've learned in this endeavour: 1. It's okay to say no When I first started this business, I felt INCREDIBLY guilty every time I was booked to capacity and had to tell someone I couldn't help. But that's the thing - if you say yes and then are so overloaded you're not doing a good job, then you're NOT helping. 2. Book time for yourself It's okay to book your system out for YOU so you have time to refresh and reset. You're worth it. And you'll be better serving your community by doing so. 3. Charge your worth This one is hard, but do you feel like you're bending over backwards with no thanks? Perhaps it's because you're giving that service away for free... This took AGES to be okay with, but it's really important. You voted and I deliver. What was the vote for? On my stories I asked if people wanted to see what the back of my double glass frames looked like. The result was a resounding "yes please", so here it is. If you were expecting anything other than a hot mess on the back side of my double glass frames you were living in a fantasy land. One thing you might notice in amongst the haphazard array of stems is not a lot of glue. I really like the natural look. Like REALLY. It's my vibe. So as part of that I don't like to glue every little bit. I like literal as well as artistic movement in my pieces. Does it mean things might drop over time? Yes. Am I worried? No. Why? A) Because the likelihood of anything key dropping is very low. B) Because we're literally making art out of nature. But nature is already a work of art before any of us come along. And the fact it is ephemeral and constantly changing is absolutely gorgeous to me. Why you should trust your florist 🔥 This bouquet had allllll the treats. My description sounds crazy but as you can see it just works! - Description: Fluffy things mixed with stringy things, pompoms and elegant petals, lacelike textures mixed with tropical hints (I do actually know the name of most of these things but I feel like my description is more accessible 🙈) But WHY does it work? Because the artist that built it understands textures. They can see how these things just work. And the key is not just the textures, it’s the colours and placement too. If you have a vision you SHOULD trust your florist. Instead of going with a shopping list, go with a vibe and colour palette. The reality of the flower market is not only that things are seasonal. Now we have to worry about floods, hurricanes, too much/not enough rain, snap frosts, unseasonably warm periods and pests/disease. I left them to go crispy 🫢 That’s right. I didn’t preserve my wedding flowers. I left them in a vase while I went on honeymoon - and they dried exactly like that. Luckily they kept some form and colour and I was able to put them into my very first Time Capsule. These are no longer available, but if you want some pictures in my stories just comment below and let me know. These days I put peoples crispy flowers into a frame just the same as my 3D flowers. These ones were beautifully dried for the bride by her family - I just LOVE the colours 🥰 The frame is close to my Medium, but custom to be slightly larger, and the background is grey. ⬇️ Why I keep things flexible My process is pretty fluid. You pay a deposit and then we sort your artwork out together once the flowers are ready. Why? Weddings are a huge endeavour. People are juggling balls and herding cats - do they really have space in their head to make yet another decision? One that they might not have made if they only had the time to properly consider it? The only thing I NEED to know in advance is if you want your flowers pressed or 3D. Those are completely different processes that aren’t interchangeable. So you don’t need to decide the size, shape or frame colour/style until week 8, when the frame is custom ordered just for you. And you’re not even limited by the sizes listed. The sky is the limit. If people know they want a massive piece ahead of time then it’s good to know so I can make sure there’s enough material. But you’d be amazed at what magic can be created. ⬇️ How to make your fresh cut flowers last Why is this important to me? The fresher and more hydrated your flowers, the better they preserve. I always refresh the flowers I get to make sure they’re as hydrated as possible before I begin preservation. People come up with a lot of things to make their flowers last - flower food, a bit of detergent, some sugar. But actually nothing beats keeping the water fresh and clean. Bacteria builds up in the water over time, so regular water changes prevent this. Another thing you should do that I didn’t mention in my slides: remove any leaves that might end up being submerged in water. This will also reduce bacteria growth from sludgey leaves. Flower stalks develop callouses on the ends, so trimming them regularly ensures water is getting into their stalks. Especially event flowers! Some flowers like tulips continue to grow and bloom even after they’re cut stems, while some flowers like dahlia halt all growth activity after being cut. This means if you have a dahlia bud in your bouquet it’s unlikely to ever open out. ⬇️ Why I prefer framing dry flowers Dry flowers are a beautiful option for brides who are eloping or getting married in remote locations. You can order them months in advance and don’t have to worry about wilting on the day. I personally still prefer framing this type of bouquet. Why? Well it’s purely selfish: I’m TERRIBLE at dusting. It’s probably my biggest housework flaw. To keep your dried arrangements looking good, it’s recommended you dust them every couple of months. This is done by gently putting them under a hairdryer on a cool setting. Personally, I’m just not here for that. ESPECIALLY as I don’t own a hairdryer! So for me, delicate things that attract dust under glass is ideal. Flipping it 90 degrees This particular artwork was designed in landscape layout. I’ve been looking at it for ages thinking it just isn’t sitting right with me. Obviously I worked closely with the bride to get the exact layout she was hoping for. In this case, something that emulated the tight ball arrangement of her bouquet. When I started loading the photos internet Instagram to share with you all I tried flipping it into portrait mode - just to see. Honestly for me this minor change makes all the difference! Honest details and nothing to hide. That’s me to a Tee 🥰 What does a white bouquet look like when pressed? This. I want you to get up close and personal and see exactly what you get. I never use filters and I don’t usually colour enhance. I will always be honest about it if I do. I think it’s important you know that what you see is what you get. That’s just how I roll on all levels! Some flowers turn yellow during pressing - you can see the bases of the freesia are a little. And as you can see with the tulip, some a light beige in the centre or even the whole flower. Some types of white dahlia go that way. Moth orchids go transparent and delicate, which I really love. White roses are hard. They often go beige, and it just depends on the type of rose sometimes. Chrysanthemum are a nightmare. Look at those petals - I’ve glued each of those into place individually. Why did I colour enhance this piece? I don’t like to colour enhance my artwork. I love the fact it’s natural. I like to see the flowers change during the preservation process, and slowly over time once composed into art. For me, this makes it a truly dynamic piece of artwork. Constantly evolving and maturing alongside its owner. This beautiful piece has so many different textures and elements to it. I love how complex the gorgeous bouquet was (swipe through to the last slide to see). Sometimes even a seasoned flower presser can’t get it right. In this case I couldn’t get the blue on the tweedia to stick. So I colour enhanced these to keep them true to the fresh bouquet. These were the only elements to the bouquet I enhanced - the rest is natural. Why do this when I usually keep things natural? When Sarah and her partner dropped their flowers off I asked them what their favourite part was - it was the blue tweedia. I felt because it was special to them, I wanted to go the extra mile to keep this pretty feature. Did you get disappointed? This beautiful artwork was a gift to the bride from some very special friends. When they dropped off her beautiful bouquet of white flowers with a touch of blush they said: “She adores this bouquet, but was quietly disappointed there wasn’t so much of the pink” I understand. It was too late for the actual wedding flowers, as the event had truly passed, but the lovely bride commissioned a recreation based on photos. Why did it take more than a year? How I tackle tough times 👇 I’ve been having a rough couple of months in my personal life, and while flowers are an oasis of calm for me, I’ve taken the last week off to reset. We all have moments like this. They can last a day, a week, months like me, or even longer. I have loving supportive friends and family who I am lucky enough to have. BUT - they can’t help you if you don’t reach out and trust them with your struggles. Don’t settle with struggling. If you realise you have been, then do everything in your power to reset - even if that means talking to a professional 💖 Please remember to look after yourself if you are experiencing tough times. The people in your life might not understand, but they still love and support you while you find your way. Knowing you aren’t alone while you wade through the swamp can make all the difference. What did I do for my most recent struggles? - I talked to friends - Read meaningful AND mindless books - Watched the Lion King (animated of course) - I took time off to catch up on sleep. If you’re suffering AND low on energy, a decent rest can make a huge impact. - I went to my parents for the long weekend on my own - I booked a day when I got home to pamper myself. I am fortunate that I could afford a spa treatment, but you can also treat yourself with nice soaps and candles. - I went to a bar by myself, ordered wine and cheese and read my book. Alternatively, you could put your coffee in a keep cup, make your favourite snack and find a place to read where you can take your time. - I am spending the rest of my week with my husband doing fun stuff. Today we played mini golf 🥰 The first step is seeing that where you are isn’t possible to stay in long term. Find your safety nets first and foremost. Colour or classic? What’s your style? It’s seems to be the eternal question for bridal bouquets. Do you go classic whites and/or muted pastels? Or do you go bold? This customer loved all those rich warm tones, and their bouquet was a gorgeous symphony of those hues. Will my flowers change during preservation? Yes! 🙌 Flowers are a natural product, and their colours will definitely change during the preservation process. Whites go ivory or beige, some maroons go purple-blue, and most colours become duller. While colours after preservation can last for years they do slowly change and fade over time, with some things eventually going golden. Not a fan? Some ways to slow the process are to ensure your art is kept away from direct sunlight, damp areas or extreme temperature changes. Please remember, your flowers are delicate, natural things. It is normal to expect these changes or to see small filaments or bits of pollen to drop to the bottom of your frame over time. This whole process is BEAUTIFUL! Why? Can you press dried florals? 👇 It’s time to get real. I don’t often press dried bouquets and there’s a reason for it. I don’t have the skill set to successfully press some dried elements. I don’t know how to stop them from crumbling. So I’m not saying it’s impossible. I’m just being honest and saying I don’t know how. When someone comes wanting their dried bouquet pressed I need to see detailed photos of the bouquet before I will agree to it. Mainly because I don’t want to say yes and then wreck it! Emma had the perfect dried bouquet for pressing. Lots of soft wavy grasses and things that were flexible enough to flatten. AND the added bonus of a Banksia flower. I’ve been wanting to try reconstructing one of these for about a year now, so am thrilled I got the chance. And I LOVE how it came out 🥰 If you have a dried bouquet and I can’t press it, don’t despair! I can still pop it into a box frame for you.
