Hello! Happy Sunday ☀️💕 here’s a spread for achieving your goals that I’ve been wanting to post for ages. I feel like this is an important one because it really uses tarot as quite a practical tool to get the job done and I love that! I almost think of this spread as a flowchart or a to-do list, laying out a visible map or blueprint that gets you from where you are now to where you want to be. If you try it, please tag me in it! A tendency towards worry and anxiety can come from not feeling and escaping into the maze of intellectualising things. Psychological research now shows us that a desire to escape feelings, instead of accepting them, is at the root of many issues. What got my attention seeing this card is that this queen is seated half submerged in water (feeling, emotion). She symbolises the need to be able to sit in and experience strong feelings and fight the urge to escape them. Avoidance of feelings means they are not properly experienced, dealt with and processed and this is when they creep back up on us in forms such as anxiety or depression. Water needs to flow, emotion needs to be allowed motion. The cups in this deck are tibetans singing bowls symbolizing vibration and resonance. In this card the sound-producing vessel can indicate our ability to ‘listen’ and ‘tune in’ to feeling. The position of the hands seems to reinforce this. I was once lucky enough to hear a talk on the symbology of this position and it’s use in many spiritual traditions. I cannot remember the name of the posture! I do remember it being likened to a tree with branches reaching up to heaven and feet on the earth. This position is used at the start of the ritual prayer of Muslims, as well as in other traditions, with the hands usually a bit higher to indicate listening. I really want to highlight this in plain language. People will try to weaponize peace and spirituality. Some people will try and emotionally manipulate you into feeling bad for speaking up on anything that is not ‘love and light.’ Some people will claim that if you work in any kind of spiritual arena you should be all about peace. I have had people call me out for being vocal on world issues because of being connected to a Tarot, a Sufi order and Sufi healing work. I have some bad news for you - our Sufi lineage’s first martyr died as the longest serving spy against the Nazis. Sufis were historically painted as being separate to ‘orthodox Islam’ by colonialists who found that Sufis would repeatedly be the one’s leading revolts and resistance. Spirituality is not about delusional positivity, it is about a grounded connection to reality. Peace built on injustice and inequality is really just compliant silence. ‘It’s always the one’s who claim to be all about peace….’ This was said to me like two weeks ago in a comment section. 😅😂 I have never claimed to be about peace, especially not without justice. Let’s be clear: I am all for the destruction and dismantling of oppressive systems. As we witness some of the worst crimes against humanity that we will see in our lifetimes unfolding in Rafah right now, I find myself feeling helpless, horrified and furious. The helplessness is the worst feeling, I think; wanting so desperately for things to be better and feeling so small and ineffectual in the face of vast, systemic evil. If there’s one thing I know, though, it’s that action is the antidote to despair. There are lots of things I can’t do, but what can I do? What do I have that others need? How can I add to the good here? What is my meaningful contribution? These are the questions I find myself asking and that is what this spread is for. In other news, I’ve been feeling frustrated and stymied in my personal life, to the point that I start feeling despairing about that too. There are some big goals I have that I just can’t seem to figure out, no matter how much troubleshooting I do. It’s honestly so annoying that I just want to put all my own stuff down for a bit and focus on more on how I participate in the world. The funny thing about trying to add to the greater good is that it often ends up being personally rewarding, in a roundabout way. Seems like a win-win to me. When it comes to the Air element which is connected to the Swords suit this does not work out so well. The human mind tends toward worry and over thinking. Our own thoughts can overwhelm us and cause us to not see the situation or our options in it (blindfold). We might be challenged by our own thoughts or overthinking. In the Eight of Swords we see a woman seemingly hemmed in by her own thoughts. She is blind folded and tied up representing her inability to see the situation clearly and feeling restricted or trapped. A detail I find helpful in this card is the pools of water at her feet. In the Tarot water represents feeling. There isn’t much water but just enough for her to put her toes in. Overthinking can be a way to avoid feeling. Going up into our heads and intellectualising things can be easier than sitting with difficult feelings and being present to them. By bringing our awareness back to feelings, even a little bit, it can stop us escaping into our minds. Being present to the underlying feelings can help decrease overthinking so we can begin to take small steps in the situation. Among the pseudo-histories of Tarot, that often stem from Western occultists’ imaginations, is the idea that Tarot has its origins in Kabbalah. This doesn’t seem to be any truer than the idea that is comes from ancient Egypt or from Romani ‘gypsies.’ The earliest Tarot decks we know of show NO signs of any Jewish symbolism. The oldest complete Tarot decks such the Visconti Sforza and the Sola Busca and even up to the Marseille Tarot have not one reference to Judaism and reflect their Christian Italian and French origins in their designs. The Rider-Waite-Smith deck is where we first see Kabbalistic symbolism come in - and this is not from a Jewish source. Both Waite and Colman-Smith were members of the Golden Dawn which used an ecclectic ‘Hermetic Kabbalah’ that mixed pieces of Kabbalah with Astrology and other occult areas. The Minor Arcana came to Italy through the Muslim world and the Major Arcana were finalised in Italy. Muslim Spain (Andalucía) was the bridge over which the cards crossed into Europe. Perhaps not coincidentally, Kabbalah emerged from earlier forms of Jewish mysticism in 12th and 13th century Muslim Spain. The Zohar (central book of Kabbalah) was written in Andalucía, one of the greatest Kabbalists, Maimomnides was Andalusian and Kabbalah was clearly influenced by Islamic occultism, and likely Sufism, as can be seen from historical evidence. This means Kabbalah itself is not as old as many people might assume. While Tarot and Kabbalah share some common principles and can be overlapped nicely this seems to be a later meshing of the two systems. Not the origins of Tarot. It would be easy to see The Fool as the source for The Joker cards in playing card decks. We know that the Minor Arcana of Tarot and playing cards are essentially the same deck. The oldest complete Tarot deck that resembles what we used today is the Visconti-Sforza deck from the mid 1400s. This deck has 22 Trump cards that we see in our modern decks and includes The Fool. The Joker on the other hand is actually a more recent, American addition to the playing card deck. During the American civil war The Joker was added to decks as a trump card for the game of Euchre. It has since become a wild card for many other games. So why the care-free Fool and the playful Joker may easily be conflated in our minds they actually have their own origin stories hundreds of years apart. In light (literally) of the Scorpio full moon square Pluto tonight, I’ve been thinking about the difference between control and power. I believe that the need to over-control our lives is the product of feeling a lack of genuine personal empowerment from within. In a sense, being controlling and being empowered in a healthy way are actually quite opposite. In this crazy world which constantly bombards and affronts many of us, it’s all too easy to try to force our lives, the people in it and the situations we find ourselves in to bend to our will. It’s also usually quite counterproductive in my experience because it takes us further from the sense of genuine empowerment and inner security that we all crave. I am also learning, sometimes reluctantly, that relinquishing the desire to control or even strategise creates space for things to shift and move on their own. Very often this turns out better than if I had tried to make everything in my life the way I *think* would be best. I often still have to make a big effort to relax though. Sometimes you have to be humble and remember that in the grand scheme of things, from your own limited, human perspective, you really don’t know how things *should* be or what the best case scenario is. On the upside, you also often don’t have to know, you just have to stop gripping the steering wheel so tightly and coast a little as things unfold.

Do you know the orbit of Venus traces a pentagram? Every eight years the planet Venus draws a five sided flower or pentagrammic shape with its orbit. This pattern is then repeated five times within a 40 year Venus cycle. This is likely the reason we see the number 40 used so often in the Bible (40 years in the desert, 40 days and 40 nights for the flood, Jesus in the desert for 40 days, King Saul reigned for exactly 40 years, Eli judged for 40 years, Goliath provoked Israel for 40 days). The number also appears in other traditions. For example the Buddha sat under a Bodhi tree for 40 days before attaining englightenment. Venus is a goddess of love but in astrology is associated with both Libra and Taurus. This associates the planet with love, but also money and material comfort. Ruling of over the second house Venus is connected to wealth and money. These associations are interesting to consider when we look at the suit of Pentacles in the Tarot. A pentacle is a pentagram (five-pointed star) enclosed in a circle. The pentagram is also said to represent the four elements, with the fifth point being spirit. Another interpretation is that the five points represent the human being (head and the four limbs). In it’s upright position the intellect controls the body. These interpretations are easy to connect to the suit of Pentacles when we think of how they relate to our ability to manifest. An inverted pentagram, as we see in the Devil card, is used to represent Satan. In the words of the occultist Eliphas Levi: “The Pentagram with two points in the ascendant represents Satan as the goat of the Sabbath; when one point is in the ascendant, it is the sign of the Saviour.
