I like the idea of this image more than the image itself. Does that make any sense? Haha I spotted this bike by the park path and immediately a story popped into my head. I love when a visual just fills my brain with stories. But, I struggled to capture the feeling with my camera. I think part of it was the time of day- where the sun was. BUT, what’s weird is I think this photo created a different story than what I was feeling in person. Which is a cool switch-a-roo. I remember this call like it was yesterday. I spent alot of time being frustrated with myself because I couldn't work faster and get things done STAT. But in truth, that's not how medicine works. Are you like me in the sense that a good story can so draw you in that reality seems distant? It's one of the things I love about what I do. I get to hear stories of people and places that have led to a specific point in time. Sometimes the stories have a beautiful ending. Often they're filled with trials and pain. But they're all stories of real people and real choices. As I continue reading the hall of faith in Hebrews and how Moses made choices that changed the trajectory of his life, I'm reminded that each of us is living out a story in much bigger plot. When my kids were younger in our homeschool days, their history books always made emphasis of the fact that it is "His Story." Throughout the beginning of time, each human has contributed to His Story. Some in good ways. Some in not as good ways. But I'm also reminded that even within our lives we have chapters. Largely shaped by our own choices, we can write with the integrity of character in how we respond to things beyond our control. We can choose to fill our stories with gratitude, honor, sacrifice, dedication and most importantly love. Even if one chapter hasn't been what you would've chosen, there is still time to write the next greatest story ever. The choice is ours. One thing I do know, the most courageous acts of faith and valor become the stories told for generations.

Continued history lesson on the mill - By the turn of the 19th century, Linn Kane purchased the mill and ran a successful cider making business until the production of hard cider was banished and Prohibition hit in the 1920s. By the end of the ban, beer was being produced at a large scale and was done so inexpensively that hard cider production was almost eradicated completely. The mill survived on small-lot custom pressing and woodworking until the 1950s when Linn finally closed it. At this point, it was referred to as the "old mill" and nobody thought it would ever see production again. But in 1962, a couple of young, bright eyed locals, Barbara and Charlie Michaels, saw their future in the old property. Although, admittedly, it was the home on the property that intrigued them and they had no real interest in the run down mill. Linn Kane, seeing the hope in their eyes, sold them the property at a deal, with the secret hope that they would breath new life into the Mill itself. The task of restoring the old house on the property was first priority... and it was a huge undertaking. But Charlie, a skilled craftsman, and Barbara, a grade school art teacher, used their creativity to turn the structure into a beautiful home for their family. All the while, Linn told them stories of old when wagons lined the streets to the corner, waiting for the apple pressing to begin in hopes that they would see the potential in the mill as well. The Story of a Mother by Hans Christian Andersen This weekend begins Dia de los Muertos here in Mexico. It's such a beautiful celebration of remembrance. With news of all the immense continued loss of life, and the even deeper chasms of division in our world, I've been deep in contemplation. The only way for me to "make it make sense" is to create. Something I have found (without even trying to), that helps me to create some sense of existential "organization" to chaos that I have NO control over, are the myths and "fairytales" of old. These ancient stories still carry a wisdom that have the ability to pierce straight to the heart of the matter - that is, if you're willing to listen with the part of you that doesn't use logic. This is the corner of 2nd and Jefferson streets. In the mid 1800s Second street got the label of "Bloody Second". There isn't much info on Bloody Second Street except a couple mentions a few years later in the newspapers. During the 1870s and 1880s many fist fights, knifings, and shootings took place on this block. Likely due to its proximity to a variety of local bars. These bars were not all located on second street but within a close proximity up Jefferson to Fifth (at the time St. Johns) street. This makes it likely that the whole area was often unsavory, at least after dark. The photo on the left featuring the now green building was formerly known as Liberty Hall. Various local people ran a saloon from this building in the 1860s through the 1880s. One of them being Anton Zoff, and later after his death the saloon was ran by his wife, Marie, until she remarried Fritz Schuenemeyer. Other notable saloon owners in this building were J. F. Brinkmann, William Remmert, Fred Gersie, and Ed Krekel. This particular tavern seemed to have quite a reputation, though we have not found any story to specifically tie to the building. In a paper from 1881 an article told of a fight that took place at Meyers Saloon which was located at the corner of 5th and Jefferson streets. Two men began arguing when one man told the other he wasn't a real German. It didn't take long until one man threw the saloon lantern at the other man. In "self defense" the other man retaliated by throwing the only other working oil lantern hitting the aggressor in the chest. Luckily the man did not catch fire but it left the bar in total darkness. When the saloon keeper relit the lantern it was discovered that one of the men had drawn their pistol. The other men partaking in a drink intervened and was able to prevent a shoot out.
