What a cutie! Did you know that the Whitetail Deer was once extinct in North East Georgia? The last known deer in the area was killed in what is now Fannin County in 1895. Bashful Wakerobin 😍 This was my first time noticing one of these beautiful little native plants! They are one of the 20 types of Trillium that are native to Georgia and are a member of the Lily family. Native Americans apparently used it as a root tea to facilitate child birth, regulate menstrual cycles, and to alleviate other menstrual problems. A fun find on our hike this week! A chemical reaction caused by a tiny mosquito-like fly causes these bright pink spots on the leaves of Red Maple trees. The midge fly lays it's eggs on the underside of the leaf and the hormones released cause a ring to form around the larvae. A few days later, the leaf will fall to the ground where the pupae will continue growing in the soil before emerging as adults a year later. Martins Mine is reopened! We are excited to announce that the Martins Mine Trail Loop has been restored, and hikers are once again able to view the remnants of gold mining in Smithgall Woods. Due to this week's hunting, the inner portion of Smithgall will not be open again until this Sunday, the 10th. Tulip Poplars are some of the first trees to let us know that fall is here with their leaves changing into a beautiful bright yellow. Here are some fun facts about this well-known tree! - Tulip Poplars are neither Tulip Trees, or Poplar Trees. A year or two ago, I cried as I watched a video of the late Alan Rickman introducing a film he’d made, because it sounded more like he was introducing life: “This is not reality. It’s a romance. So take a breath, enjoy it- it’s *for* you.” Exactly a year ago today, I wrote this: “Getting into my body reminds me how miraculous it is that I’m in a human body on an inhabitable earth around a living sun. There was a time when none of this was yet true and there will be a time when all of it is no longer true. Life is only a gift. It is *for* us.” It’s all happening for us. And here I lay, writing this happily tired and from my bed after opening the week with two fully-booked client days in a row and Full Moon Yoga and Meditation. In a life that is incredibly full but, every single day, contains more and more of exactly what I want to be doing. A gift. A life that sees me enjoying the chaos of getting my ass up first thing on a Saturday morning and driving 75 minutes to the mountains even though I have other places to be in the opposite direction later in the day, smiling at that chaos even, because I know that time in my body and with the bare earth is non-negotiable for me. And a gift. More and more I move toward what I want and need. A gift. One that I will try my best to hold with an open palm, because there was a time when none of this was true and there will be a time when all of it is no longer true. And so the only solution is grateful wonder and a breath in, and a breath out. 💚

TEN Georgia State Parks/ Historical Sites in less than a month! We live in a beautiful place where most of our adventures were in our backyard or less than an hour's drive (other than Magnolia Springs). (Amicalola Falls, Smithgall Woods, Tallulah Falls, Tagaloo, Magnolia Springs, Hardman Farm, Unicoi, Dahonega Gold Musume, Vogel, and Black Rock Mountain)   We've spent the summer chasing waterfalls, looking for geocache, having picnic lunches, and making memories on the trails. Each trail was filled with more than dirt, rocks, and roots. Look at this lovely Common Snapping turtle that was hanging out by our #wetland! It is currently nesting season for turtles, so remember to be extra cautious when driving, especially if you are driving near water. Here are some fun facts about these tough-looking critters: 1: Common Snapping turtles are considered foragers, and get up to 90% of their diet from dead plant and animal material. 2: Snapping turtles are one of the only kinds of turtles that can not retract into their shells. 3: Snapping turtles can only be found in North America! Lets talk about roses! The first rose pictured is the Carolina Rose. These beautiful flowers are currently blooming, and you'll likely see them alongside roads and ditches. This is a native species of rose, and it is often cultivated in gardens. The second rose pictured is the Multiflora Rose. The Multiflora Rose is NOT native, and is considered an invasive plant. Although beautiful, this species of rose, native to East Asia, is an extremely aggressive grower, and will choke out surrounding native species. Please do your part in preventing the spread of invasive species, and do not cultivate/propagate/collect from invasive and non-native plants; no matter how pretty they are! #gastatepark #smithgallwoods

When in Helen, GA and you want a peaceful and beautiful short hike to stretch your legs… #laurelridgetrail is your answer. #smithgallwoods is a beautiful park for a picnic, hike and even fly fishing - permit required. Laurel Ridge is an interpretive trail that gains approximately 314 feet in 1.6 miles. The ridge has a beautiful view of #mountyonah - added bonus. Smithgall Woods State Park is an interesting mix of hemlocks, mountain laurels, pines, hardwoods, bogs, trout streams, and Caution Bees. Sadly I saw no live bears despite the promise given all the warning signs. What a tease. The caution bees reminded me to take my time and to watch my footing. The moat of poison ivy around their boxes was a nice touch to keep curious fools like me from getting too close to their hives. If you happen to go the way I did, be prepared to get your feet wet crossing the creek while completely missing the waterfall (Chunanee Falls). 🙄 Oh well. A short adventure this morning on the Laurel Ridge Trail at @smithgall.woods

The native Azaleas are in full bloom! There are approximately 10 species of Azaleas native to Georgia. These native species are very different to the azaleas most people are used to seeing. Decorative non-native species, like the Southern Indian Azalea pictured last, are evergreen shrubs that grow in thick formation. Although still beautiful, these non-native species do not have the same benefits to native wildlife as their native counterparts! Native species, such as the Flame Azalea, and the Piedmont Azalea shown in the first two slides, provide not only a stunning landscape, but vital nectar to our native pollinators. #Smithgallwoods is proud to have over 5 of these native species planted around our ADA trail. #gastateparks #plantnative

A busy and productive work week calls for a celebratory hike. I haven’t been up the Laurel Ridge Trail at @smithgall.woods @gastateparks in a hot minute, so we hit it for happy yappy hour. Annie 🐶 pulled me up to the vista, and we enjoyed some time together soaking in the view of Sal, Yonah, and Pink Mountains. The forest 🌳 is greening up, and the dogwoods are starting to pop as well.
