‘Tent’ (III) @grotekerkalkmaar still relevant and urgent 🚨 to be presented in exhibitions means to create space in which humanity in the best sense of its meaning can find its way Unfortunately the installation stays relevant and urgent, particularly in the light of current Dutch gouvernement which is a dangerous right wing coalition but also regarding #gazagenocide #ukrainewar and many other parts of the world. It started with the larger ‘Tent’ part, during solo exhibition ‘Wel Kom’ (Tankstation, Enschede, 2015), meaning ‘welcome’ and ‘do come’. Here it was presented as part of a large total installation. ‘Do Come’ specifically related to the refugee crisis as a result of the war in #syria which resulted in a worldwide stream of refugees. But also to be read as a general call to welcome refugees from parts of the world that are not safe or not safe for individuals. In ‘Tent’ III I added a much smaller ‘circle’ existing of children chairs. This installation worked very well in this specific environment of the church during exhibition ‘100% VROUW’ in the ‘Grote Kerk Alkmaar’ oktober 2019. Disabled installation artist, researcher and drag king Lady Kitt describes their work as ‘Mess Making As Social Glue’. Working on long term collaborations, projects are usually punctuated by the creation of large-scale, vibrant installations or sites for exchange made from recycled paper, reused plastics and raw clay, which Kitt calls shrines. Kitt’s work has won North East Culture Awards ‘Newcomer of the Year’ award 2022, VAMHN Arts Award 2023, been longlisted for both the 2023 and 2024 Aesthetica Art Prize, shown at Atlanta Contemporary (USA), Saatchi Gallery (UK), National Centre on Restorative Justice (USA) and commissioned by Craftspace, Birmingham (‘Drag Declares Emergency’ 2022-23), Arts & Heritage (‘This, our hive of voices’ 2020-22) and BALTIC, Gateshead (‘Open. ‘The Silent Reflection’ by Hans op de Beeck at Elleboogkerk, Amersfoort “For the Elleboog Church, Hans Op de Beeck created a new site-specific installation, as he has created several in a wide variety of locations over the past twenty years. Each time this involves an enigmatic place with an architectural and landscape dimension, where he invites the viewer to find silence and a timeless moment of reflection and calm. Although these staged places are undeniably unreal, often surreal-looking or absurd, they can create an authentic experience for the viewer. Op de Beeck does not aim to simulate reality in his work, but wants to evoke a mood that touches on the essence under the skin of reality. To this end, he also often chooses a very reduced and interpreted pallet of one, two or three colours or complete monochromy. This reduces the anecdotal nature of the fully coloured reality and stills and petrifies the proposed into a more silent, monolithic whole. In the Elbow Church, he installed a large, milky, gently rippling surface of water in which white rocks, reeds and bare trees stand. In the back wall of the church, the artist suggests an opening to the outside, as if the white water of a lake ripples into the church. Before leaving Berlin, I had the privilege of a private tour of Hamburger Bahnhof Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart (@hamburger_bahnhof ) and got a rare perspective with a most special view from Niele Toroni’s permanent in-situ installation on the nineteenth century’s buildings facade. We also toured the collection and the exquisite LEE UFAN (@leeufanarles ) exhibition and enjoyed Elmgreen Dragset’s sculpture “Statue of Liberty” in the museum’s courtyard.
