Our narrator produces a sound from the piano no one else at the Conservatory can. She becomes transfixed by Helen, the niece of Holistik’s charismatic owner, and the two strike up a friendship that hazily veers into more. This is satirical horror at its finest!! A brilliantly written book tackling assimilation through the guise of the beauty industry. It explores the constant struggle between living an authentic self and the need to fit in. This book metaphorically tackles racial and ethnic cleansing with the literal use of beauty products, and it was absolutely brilliant!!! Excellent flic! Biting, twisted satire. With one character clearly being an amalgam of a couple reactionary douche canoe pundits. Also nice voice cameo from David Cronenberg. Got a bit of a "Fall of the House of Usher" vibe re: the family dynamic, and no complaints there. Also, "hot take", but I appreciate this effort from Caitlin Cronenberg more than any of Brandon's efforts so far. I liked POSSESOR, I liked INFINITY POOL more. But both still felt like they were trying to "imitate dad's work" just a bit too much. (Including INFINITY POOL's Skarsgard feeling like his direction was mostly just "try to act and sound like Viggo Mortensen!") Don't get me wrong, more Cronenberg flics is a good thing. Today, it's Brian Yuzna's directorial debut film Society, starring Billy Warlock (son of Dick Warlock, best known as Michael Myers in the 1981 Halloween II film, not to be confused with the 2009 Rob Zombie Halloween 2 film), Playboy Playmate Devin DeVasquez and Heidi Kozak, who also appeared in the second Slumber Party Massacre film and the seventh Friday The 13th film AKA the one with the telekinetic teenage girl. Can't forget to mention how the effects in the film were done by Screaming Mad George, who also done the effects for third and fourth Nightmare On Elm Street films (the cockroach scene in the latter NOES film), as well as the effects for the first Predator film, etc. Yuzna is known for his work in the Re-Animator trilogy, producing the first film (since his friend Stuart Gordon directed the first one) and directing both of the sequels, Bride Of Re-Animator and Beyond Re-Animator. Seventh day of my version of the horror subgenre challenge. Today, it's another kinda more obscure-ish film, kinda considering it's another film that you don't really hear many people talk about, although it was written by James Gunn, The Belko Experiment, starring John Gallagher Jr. (who also played Johnny in Green Day's Broadway musical of American Idiot, as well appearing in other films like 10 Cloverfield Lane and Mike Flanagan's Hush), John C. McGinley (who is that guy from Scrubs), David Dastmalchian (who was also the Polka Dot Man in the 2021 Suicide Squad film, as well as starring in the Ant-Man films), Michael Rooker and James Gunn's younger brother Sean Gunn, the last two who were at the Northern Ireland Comic Con at the Eikon Centre in Lisburn, although I wasn't there, so I didn't meet either of them, as I haven't been outside of Belfast since the pandemic... well, I barely go outside Belfast since it is my hometown and I've lived there all my life. This is a film that I discovered about a year prior to the pandemic from when I heard this film from Dead Meat just after I discovered that YouTube channel about a couple of months prior. I vaguely remember watching the film first on Netflix just prior to watching Dead Meat's Kill Count video. Sixth of my version of the October horror subgenre challenge. Today, it's another deep cut-type film, as it's one of George A. Romero's non-zombie flicks, Martin (also internationally known as Wampyr), when he made this vampire flick back in 1977. As he is obviously best-known for his Living Dead films (especially the original LD Trilogy - the original 1968 Night Of The Living Dead film, the original 1978 Dawn Of The Dead film and the original 1985 Day Of The Dead film, as well as his other LD Trilogy - Land Of The Dead, Diary Of The Dead and Survival Of The Dead), you pretty much don't hear this film getting mentioned much but at least he did something different other than zombie flicks and it's still pretty well-received. Romero himself has mentioned that this was his favourite film that he has made. It's also the first collaboration between Romero and the legendary special effects artist Tom Savini. While a prosecution for obscenity did not result, the film was seized and confiscated in the UK under Section 3 of the Obscene Publications Act 1959 during the video nasty panic. I’ve been reading almost exclusively indie horror for the past few years which has introduced me to so many great new authors, many of which I’ve became friends with, but in doing that, I’ve been neglecting my elders. So I’m trying to change that. I don't hear about Guy N Smith too often even then it’s only sporadically because since his passing, most of his work has gone out of print which makes it hard to reach new readers. Known for his pulp-style horror, I started with what seemed to be his seminal work, Night of the Crabs, which also spawned several sequels. The entire time reading this cheeky monster tale, I kept thinking to myself it is basically Attack of the Killer Tomatoes but with crabs. After checking the published date, this book actually came out two years before AOTKT. I know they churned out a lot of these satirical monster movies/books in the 70s, many of which are very similar to each other. This one might not be the first and probably didn’t win any literary awards, but it’s worth checking out for the novelty. Although I wouldn’t pay the current market rate for a paperback, it’s a nice collector’s item if you can find a copy at a decent price. Bentley Little has a penchant for taking the most mundane, every day thing and making it a satirical horror. I went to see The People Under the Stairs at the movie theater when it came out in 1991. Because it was a Wes Craven movie. Then I completely forgot about it. Probably because I was 23. I wasn't ready for something with such social outrage, biting satire, hilariously strange incestuous cannibals "feeding" off of the impoverished people of color living all around them while stockpiling gold coins? I especially wasn't ready for the man I knew as Big Ed Hurley running around in a gimp suit shooting at people in the walls and telling them to "burn in hell" every 5 minutes with his sister/wife Nadine serving up their kidnapped daughter to help remedy Ed's headaches. But I guess tonight I was finally ready. As corny as The People Under the Stairs seems at times, it was probably pretty groundbreaking for its social critique and for being pretty weird. god bless Wes Craven. As it was St. Paddy's Day today (or as I like to call it "St. Krabby Patties Day", a reference to the Krabby Patty from SpongeBob), here's a film that is set around that time of the year, the 1976 religious satirical cosmic psychological sci-fi crime mystery horror film God Told Me To (AKA Demon when it was released in certain theatrical markets), directed by the late Larry Cohen, who also directed Q: The Winged Serpent and The Stuff. This film features a brief role from the late comedian Andy Kauffman as a police assassin. It was released on my birthday (the 22nd of October in '76, 21 years before I was born). Like many of his films, it is shot on location in New York City and it incorporates aspects of police procedural. It came out a dozen years prior to another horror film that takes place during St. Paddy's Day, the first Maniac Cop film. Of course, there's also the Leprechaun franchise as well. Oct 10: THE STUFF (1985, Larry Cohen) Synopsis: After a delicious white substance oozes from the Earth, capitalists manage to find a way to harvest it sustainably, sell it without testing from the FDA and create a culinary phenomenon. They call it “The Stuff,” and after it hits the market, stocks in Big Ice Cream go down the toilet, so they hire former food mogul Chocolate Chip Charlie and Ben Stone from Law and Order pretending to be Michael Moriarty pretending to be Mo Rutherford, a former FBI agent turned industrial saboteur. Wow. Simultaneously, Jason, a kid with a bright future in activism, discovers The Stuff is actually an alien parasite that consumes the host from within after his family turns into Froyo Zombies. Having made the same discovery and charming the pants off of The Stuff’s marketing executive, Nicole, they rescue the boy from the certain peril. After some B-movie James Bond shit at a processing plant, the trio escape with a tanker truck and consult Paul Sorvino, an insane retired Colonel with his own Militia, at his castle, I guess. They move on the factory, narrowly escaping the Albino Blob, and then in a valiant effort to warn the public, take over a radio station to broadcast the conspiracy behind the murderous meringue, but not before Choco Choco Charles shows up, now under the control of evil, sentirnt ice cream, almost kills Nicole and Jason. They survive, and the group is lauded as national heroes, so they make the crony-capitalist pigs responsible literally eat their just desserts. A Brief Review: Fantastic. Major ‘They Live!’ vibes which I am very partial to. It’s not as great, but it definitely has this charming, campy, exhilaration and feels a lot like an homage to the drive-in B-Movie horror flicks of the 50s and 60s, with an anti-capitalist message I can respect. All the actors are awkwardly fantastic like they can’t believe this is happening and the practical effects are outstanding. It’s bloody, cheesy, on-the-nose horror fun, and I endorse it wholeheartedly. Rating: I give this film 7.9 Pints of Cherry Garcia that will binge on YOU out of 10 times you ate too much ice cream and thought, this might as well be the end

Happy 10th anniversary! Saw this in theaters a decade ago with @travismonroe + another friend, and it was one of the most wildly electrifying films I've ever seen on the big screen. We gasped, laughed and shrieked throughout. Much like Scream in '96, Cabin serves as both a love letter to and indictment of popular horror trends at the time. In fact, the whole movie is a not-so-subtle satirical statement on the reboot-fueled horror industry that dominated the 2000s. The 'puppeteers' try to appease the 'gods' in the same way many horror filmmakers still try to appease rabid fans today: by putting poorly-developed characters through the same tedious, monotonous proceedings over and over again with very few surprises. Eventually, the characters themselves in this film rise up and say "We're tired of being your archetypal stereotypes, and we're tired of this rote, repetitive bullshit you call a plot. Burn it all down." It was a call for horror filmmakers to be more creative and color outside the lines again as they had in the past. Mayhem (2017) A corporate office building goes under quarantine when a viral outbreak causes its inhabitants to act on their most basic urges. Due to the film's synopsis and wild opening scene, you may expect to be in for something approaching Avatar's "Crossed" comic book series; and while there is some chaotic violence, the film bogs itself down with satire and an uninteresting corporate workplace narrative. I understand establishing characters and plot developement, but this one doesn't do a good job balancing those with the other elements and it comes off feeling uneven or not sure of what it really wants to be. Instead of living up to its title by going all in, it takes a middle road approach and in turn becomes a mediocre film all-around. In no way did I hate the movie, but of the many films with somewhat similar premises, this isn't one that I found particularly entertaining or intriguing.

This movie is more gruesome than it is horrific (the exit of The Stuff from a body is… something), but it is still a 6/10 on the scary scale. #NowWatching This movie remains a delightful love letter to various horror sub-genres from the past and present. Perfect Halloween Season viewing. It's also a sly, metafictional satire of the horror film industry during the 2000s (similar to how Scream '96 was partially intended to be a commentary on '80s slashers). [SPOILERS]: The 'puppeteers' represent horror filmmakers who constantly try to appease fans-- AKA the 'gods'-- by putting characters through the same repetative storylines over and over again (think about all the horror remakes & SAW knockoffs from the aughts). At the end of the film, the characters themselves fight back and essentially say, "We're done with this repetitive bullshit, and we're done being your stale character archetypes." I support that message. If anything, this movie is almost too smart for its own britches (it's also just plain FUN). Today, it’s superhero horror (even though the original one was Gothic horror instead of superhero horror, although I thought I would change it to superhero horror because the I somehow kinda find the term Gothic horror so off putting in a way, even though I do know that Gothic horror is influenced by Gothic literature of the 1800s and the fact that it has nothing to do with the goth subculture, as it’s kinda more to do with how I’m extremely adverse with the goth subculture, which does especially explain with the fact that I used to get picked on by a guy who I went to school with who assumed that I was a goth based on my taste in music, even though I never really FW gothier rock and gothier metal, especially the latter, since I kinda pretty much detest that fusion of gothic rock and metal). I first read “American Psycho” in the mid 90s, and while I loved it, didn’t think it could be pulled off as a movie. With the film’s 2000 release, I was proven wrong. This horror satire is a real favorite of mine…how can you not love the ridiculousness of someone being brutally murdered to Huey Lewis and the News’ “Hip to be Square”? I love that AP demonstrates how crappy, shallow, boring and generic 80s yuppies were; so much that you could go on a killing spree and no one would believe you’d be capable of it OR your life is so uneventful and sad that you imagine you went on said killing spree (opinions on whether our yuppie asshole pal Patrick Bateman really does all his dirty deeds are pretty ambiguous). An ode to a year without hair salons. Bad Hair (2020) by Justin Simien is a satirical horror film that weaves itself into a knot of broken potential. As someone who quite regularly wears wigs and weaves, I was really looking forward to this coming out. The concept felt very fresh, and something that A24 would have gobbled up. However, rather than serving us a hair raising horror, it served us with a lackluster hairball. It had it's moments which were quite entertaining and you could tell that the makers wanted something more humourous rather than terrifying. Which would have been great...if only this movie wasn't marketed as a horror film. On a more positive note, the cast were amazing and gave it their all. Also, the film tackled a lot of complex messages in an unexpected way which was pretty awesome. What did you think about Bad Hair? Did you like it? I’m very excited to see new life for this unfortunately still relevant satirical commentary on gentrification, class, and racism. Our hero, Poindexter "Fool" Williams played perfectly by Brandon Quintin Adams (Mighty Ducks and The Sandlot) is resourceful and compassionate. The viewer feels an easy connection to him and you truly root for his survival. Man/Daddy and Woman/Mommy are perfection as camp representations of the monstrous upper class. Played by Everett McGill and Wendy Robie, both having had roles Twin Peaks among other works. A. J. Langer (My So-Called Life) as Alice brings a heartbreaking performance as a young person suffering unspeakable abuse at the hands of Man and Woman, adding a level of gut wrenching to a film that could easily fall into the trap of too much comedy for such a serious topic. Danielewski is a satirical horror fantasy novel that will turn you into a different person by the time you have reached the final page. An LA tattoo shop employee, comes across a notebook filled with an annotated version of the Navidson Report story written by an old man named Zampano, who was found dead in his messy apartment. Will Navidson, a photojournalist moves into a new home with his wife and the rest of their story is told through various interviews and videotapes. Strange things start to happen, and the unfortunate tattoo employee finds himself immensely involved with the stories and becomes plagued by it. This book will be unlike anything that you have ever read. Ever. It has a slow creepy burn that will plague your mind for eternity. The writing style is just perfectly weird and wonderful. Denielewski dares to experiment with the horror fantasy genre and it freaking works. You will love this wonderfully flawed masterpiece. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘭𝘺𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘮𝘣 𝘛𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘴 (1963) is probably the best known work of American author and illustrator Edward Gorey. In over fifty years it has never once been out of print. The illustrations are endearing of course but out of a vast field why has this particular 'abecedarian' (alphabet book) been so enduring? To me the mystery of the book’s appeal lies in its sheer audacity; taking a specifically children’s medium and making it grimly antithetical by teaching children through the very medium of dead kids. Or should I say doomed kids; for the other reason for its popularity, or indeed that it is permitted to exist as a piece entertainment at all, is Gorey’s clever deception. When Prue is ‘trampled flat in a brawl’ what we actually get is an illustration of Prue reaching for a saloon door. The actual ‘trampling’ occurs in the reader’s mind, making us voyeuristically complicit in these nasty little encounters. The horror is in what Gorey declines to show. Finally 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘭𝘺𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘮𝘣 𝘛𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘴 rebels both against the sunny idyll of childhood and also the outsize fantastical imaginations of children.
