What you don’t see is the panic attack that consumed me minutes after this photo was snapped. TW: general references to past SA. (I nervously share this in an attempt to normalize, just simply to say, “you’re not alone” to all those who have felt the same) We were led back into the private room where my ultrasound and HSG test were to take place. I got undressed and settled in with Anna by my side. After being an egg donor, I feel quite comfortable getting pricked and prodded and can sit with physical discomfort, especially in the name of fertility. The doc walked in and behind her came her male attendant. My heart immediately started to race but I told myself that it was a medical setting and that I could breathe through any emotional discomfort. Before I knew it, I was choking on the sobs I’d tried to hard to swallow and I began to dissociate as the doc forced the instruments inside of me. My panic consumed me within seconds. I saw my pants sprawled on the ground and the flashbacks rolled in like thunder. Being undressed with an unknown male by my side sent me spiraling back into the darkness I’ve spent so many years trying to shut out. They quietly left the room and Anna held me as I shook. “I’m so sorry” I kept repeating. But what I was really saying is that I’m so sorry these memories continue to haunt me. I’m so sorry that I haven’t done enough of the work. I’m so sorry I let it continue to happen. But most of all, I’m so sorry that I shut down instead of talking to you because the shame feels like two hands around my neck, and the more I share, the more I suffocate. So they brought in a female attendant and finished the test as the tears soaked the paper sheet beneath me. We came home and I crawled into bed. I walked into my darkness, wandering through my nightmares in my never-ending attempt to understand. I finally slept. And when I awoke, I shut the door on that darkness once again, hoping that maybe, just maybe, one day I’ll see a fraction of light peep through.
