On January 19, 1998, the world at large was introduced to this timeless and necessary musical when Rosie put on the entire opening number! Show: Ragtime Song: “Prologue: ‘Ragtime’” Ragtime is a musical with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally. It is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by E.L. Doctorow. Set in the early 20th century, Ragtime tells the story of three groups in the United States: African Americans, represented by Coalhouse Walker Jr., a Harlem musician; upper-class suburbanites, represented by Mother, the matriarch of a white upper-class family in New Rochelle, New York; and Eastern European immigrants, represented by Tateh, a Jewish immigrant from Latvia. The show also incorporates historical figures such as Harry Houdini, Evelyn Nesbit, Booker T. Washington, J. P. Morgan, Henry Ford, Stanford White, Harry Kendall Thaw, Admiral Peary, Matthew Henson, and Emma Goldman. The Broadway production began previews on December 26, 1997, and officially opened on January 18, 1998. It was the first production in the newly opened Ford Center for the Performing Arts. OTD in Music History: Legendary American composer and iconoclast Charles E. Ives (1874 - 1954) dies in New York City. After graduating from Yale University with a music degree in 1898, Ives became.... a junior insurance clerk in New York City. A decade later, Ives founded the highly successful insurance partnership of "Ives & Myrick," which he thereafter headed until 1930. He actually devised the insurance concept of modern estate planning, and consequently he died an extremely wealthy man. Nevertheless, Ives always considered composition to be his true calling. Chronic diabetes eventually forced Ives to give up both composing and business, and his music only became known within the wider musical world in the final years of his life -- but he did live to see himself hailed as one of the most prophetic composers in history, and rightly so, given that he presciently anticipated many trends that would define "classical" music in the latter half of the 20th Century decades before they became popular. In 1947, Ives received the Pulitzer Prize for his Third Symphony ("The Camp Meeting"), which he had composed more than 40 years earlier. Other important compositions include "The Unanswered Question" (c. before 1908); "Central Park in the Dark" (1906); "General William Booth Enters into Heaven" (1914); "A Symphony: New England Holidays" (which includes “Washington’s Birthday,” 1909 but rescored c. 1913; “Decoration Day,” 1912; “Fourth of July,” c. 1912–13; and “Thanksgiving and Forefathers’ Day,” 1904); a wild set of "114 Songs" (1919–24); and the "Second Piano Sonata (Concord, Mass., 1840–60)" (c. 1909-15, rev. 1947), which pays homage to the American "Transcendentalist" movement in four movements entitled “Emerson,” “Hawthorne,” “The Alcotts,” and “Thoreau." PICTURED: A photo portrait showing the elderly Ives (c. 1949). Also shown is a first edition printing of the (long and philosophical) program notes that Ives wrote to accompany his "Concord Sonata." These program notes were first published as "Essays" (alongside the Sonata itself) in 1920. This copy of the "Essays" was signed and inscribed by Ives to his cousin, Amelia Ives Van Wyck, in May 1920.

Harry Barris - one of Paul Whiteman’s three rhythm boys (the other two being Mildred Bailey’s brother Al Rinker and none other than the Bing Crosby) - composed this piano novelty in 1926. It was emblematic of the Charleston craze that pervaded the mid-1920s and ended up being more widely recorded and performed as an instrumental number for orchestra than a piano solo.
